I went to basic in 2006. Bring a backpack with the mandatory paperwork and maybe some snacks for the plane ride. Leave everything else behind. You won't need most of that other stuff, and the stuff you do need, they'll issue to you or make you buy again anyway. I went to basic with the recommended packing list. They took my bag and everything in it at the beginning and I never saw it again until graduation week.

You get occasionally, like maybe once every three weeks but they will reward you if your platoon wins frequently like mine did. but ultimately it's up to the discretion of your Drill Sergeants. Damn near every in Basic is a competition. Also you might find yourself hating it but get through it, personally OSUT was the worst for me.

they took my personal bag when I got to 30th AG and got everything issued to me there, but you should definitely need to bring a lock cause people will steal things from your locker. I graduated Dec. 16 , 2015 Charlie Co. 2-19, infantry of course. p.s. 11x isn't an real mos, it's either 11B or 11c and you might not get a choice in which one you get.

i went through benning for infantry during the summer and there’s a few things that will really make your life easier in the long run. ziplock bags to keep maps, notebooks, letters, pictures dry in the rain bring bandaids cause you’re going to get messed up plenty moleskin because the vibrium boots are aweful bring extra bodywash but not shampoo because you won’t have any hair to wash extra toothbrushes so you can have some in your weapon cleaning kit extra razors so you’re not shaving with full ones ***everything you bring you’ll have to hold it over your head for a long time. ounces turn into pounds when you have 2 dufflebags over your head on day 0 good luck to all of you it’s all a mental mind game

For anyone who is watching this before they go to basic just as an FYI dont think that you will get to have ANY of this when you actually get to basic. You will use this when you get to reception but after reception is over forget it. When you are going also make sure that you bring a book because once you get there at night you will have nothing to do and having a book gives you something to pass the time.

The food you'd best eat on the bus headed there. It's contraband. The socks you can keep. The shoes, well more than likely at reception you're buying the ones at the PX. And the bag will be locked up. The locks are good as are the notepads. The first aid items will be considered contraband more than likely as well. The sandals are a no-go, unless they've changed and said you can bring them with you. My advice, and you can take it or leave it, take only a few items like one change of clothes and a few pair of white socks. Leave out the contraband items and head out with as little as possible.

i will clear this up as best as possible. To be bluntly honest he most likely won't come home for 10 days. I was under the same exact impression and had the same thing told to me. But as soon as graduation was over, I was on a bus to my next duty station within a couple hours, they had them waiting for us. I am sorry, but this can also be a good thing because those 10 days will be able to be used perhaps at his actual duty station and once he gets there they might let him apply to come home for 10 days. However, there is always a chance, it is very "basic training cycle" dependent

I believe where you go for basic training is dependent on your MOS. For example infantry goes to Ft. Benning, tankers go to Ft. Knox, a lot of non-combat MOS go to Ft. Jackson.

have fun. really. don't ever be intimidated. know you can do it, youll look back and laugh at how easy it actually is. put pride into what you do everyday, especially in yourself, try to be the best and not just waste 3 years or however long of your life you enlisted for. You can literally make the army give you opportunities that no one even knows about.

Cody briscoe you are going to end up buying pretty much everything you just brought. no choice there. you will end up buying shoes there. but it is still nice to have new shoes so when your done with basic you can wear them at your duty station and not wear the ones you bought at basic. Things that i would bring no matter what include a combination lock, stamps, cell phone(for the 2 times you will use it), your information, and wallet. if you can i would sneak band aids in, especially the blister ones, i did and they helped a lot after your first ruck marches. good luck

+finsfan90 your initial active duty time depends on what job you get. You can do 2 or 3 for some but most are 4. At the end of those 4 you can reenlist for 4 years and then get out and not have to do the inactive reserves. But the inactive reserves is just if we go to war then you may get called back to deploy, but otherwise you're living normal civilian life

not much. Kept the socks, you'll use the hygiene items while your in processing, definitely take a good pair of shoes. you probably won't get to use them for most of basic, however the last like week of OSUT we were able to wear our personal tennis shoes, and also a new pair is really nice to have for when you get to your unit because when you graduate you will most likely ship immediately to your unit and won't know where anything is so a new pair of shoes will be good to have. I used my locks, however the food i had to throw away of course.
