I have 6 salad bags going this year, Jess! I actually transplanted into 3 since I only started those last month. I also direct seeded three so almost like an accidental succession planting. And as I told you before, Even here in Chicago, your method works! I keep linking that video and sharing the information all over. Learning that was the most exciting and encouraging thing to happen to my garden in a long long while! Once again, I thank you , and I pray you will continue to receive blessings for sharing your gifts with us. "Blessings of Bounty and May Your Garden always Bring You Joy!"

I have given up on planning my garden. I can only make plans on where my tomatoes go. They usually go in the same place, but now and then we shake it up and move things around. I love that Charles Dowding is the garden master in your mind. He is in mine also. Also the squirrels have free reign in my head. After years of trying to tame them... I have given up. I embrace them now. My garden always ends up lovely no matter what... by the grace of God. ❤️

Just wanted to encourage you to collect some seeds. I've grown the Dino & Scotch curled kales from Baker Creek. I let them bolt and go to seed, and I'll never have to buy those seeds again. LOL... If the kales that survived your frost make it over winter (and you let them bolt this coming summer), one plant will yield seeds for 50 years! Same with your arugula. :-)))))

I hear ya on the garden map! I decided I had to have one, so went through the following process to make one: 1. Use Google earth/maps images of the yard, size and print the not so great images 2. Outline garden beds, permanent structures, etc on the print outs with sharpie for clarity 3. Trace in pencil the print outs onto clean paper (I just used 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper and taped down as needed) 4. Go over tracings in marker, color code as needed 5. Laminate (I laminate my own, all sheets individually) and tack to the wall 6. Again, color coding, I used Vis-a-vis wet erase markers to fill in the plants and plans. I can use this map over and over by washing it off as needed. The only downside is that I can't take it outside with me... I'll have to take a picture or make some notes at planting time... Best wishes!

I also love Charles Dowding! I got myself one of his books for Christmas. :) I can't wait to see how your beets and turnips do - I am a bit behind you (I'm in zone 5) so I get to see you try things first. ;) And yes to lots of roast cauliflower! It's my kids' favorite veggie. And to growing stuff I can't buy. I have also noticed that cauliflower tends to be wrapped in plastic at the store, so growing my own will reduce waste. My grandfather was a gardener too, but he passed when I was 9. I do have memories of planting tulip bulbs with him though.

On an honest note I'm chasing actual squirrels how does everyone get rid of squirrels I didn't grow a vegetable garden last year but did grow lots of flowers this year I'm going to and two 4 x 10 raised beds I'm sure they will love them. I saw a video with a guy who said he used Marigolds and a windmill to get rid of them. I grew Marigolds last year and the squirrels didn't get in those pots I figured it was because they were so close to the house anyone have any luck with this? Love watch you talk and growing your garden you put me in a good happy mood you smile so much please never stop being happy and smiling and making videos for us all to get motivated and get out in the garden.

I've been thinking about getting a large poster board to draw out my garden. It isn't near as big as your beautiful space. I like to make notes on what I'm planting, where I'm planting them. It helps me to visualize the garden space much better. Thank you for the winter garden update. I have the itch to get into my garden lately. I'm starting my first real selection of veggies this autumn (We're in summer right now) so going to bring my seeds in soon so I can go through them and decide. These were a Woolworths promotion and free. So pretty basic, but it's a good start. I want to grow things I know we like, plus something we've never had before to try. I live in Victoria Australia, and fresh food is so expensive, organic is even worse. With all these fires as well, prices are going to skyrocket even more. So I'm really determined to grow more this year.

Gosh, we are new to growing and we are hoaning in on just growing things we like and making the most of our space. However, we had an amazing crop of red and sweet potatoes, which almost all are growing stems, not just big eyes, stems and slips! We hardly got to eat that many potatoes. Do you or anyone else have any suggestions? (We have a cool dark, dry cellar where we store them after hardening them off.) them

Do you think that chasing squirrels is a typical gardener behavior? I am chasing them daily! I saw that you are planting some Cosmic Purple carrots and some Russian Kale. I am presently giving away seeds for those, and some other things, that I harvested from my little garden on my channel. One thing I like about the Russian Kale over the Scotch Blue Curled Kale, is how much easier it is to wash. I tried the Amarillo and Kyoto red carrots last year. My Kyoto reds didn't germinate well, but the Amarillo's did okay, and they stayed sweeter in the heat too.

Hi, Laurie. Hope you don't mind me stepping in to help provide an answer... Parsnips are wonderful -- especially when cooked and mashed with potatoes or cubed for use in meat pies or soups. Parsnips need a long growing season -- anywhere from 120 to as much as 180 days (depending on variety and growing conditions). The soil temp should be in the neighborhood of 55 degrees. I generally start mine the first week in April. The roots go fairly deep, so work your soil to a depth of about 15 inches. The seeds do best when being direct sown. The two varieties that grow the best for me are: "Half Long Guernsey" from BAKER CREEK and "White Spear" from TERRITORIAL SEED. Hope this helps! Happy gardening from Kate in Olympia, WA (zone 8b)

Laurie... Forgot to mention that it is best to hold off on harvesting parsnip until there has been a frost (or two). The flavor gets sweeter... Kate

Listen. I love that she’s so real. Like this could be growing down the road in your neighborhood. Her garden isn’t made out of high price products from stores and such. You can see tires and recycled wood. Donated wire fencing. She’s building with what she has. Makes you think it’s attainable for the every day person.

My partner apropos of nothing: when we have a farm I want to call it Bethany because that's where Jesus and his friends stop to have a rest and rejuvenate and have a snack before doing the next thing

Sara Pittman 😮. We’ve move back to MO 10 yrs ago from FL, I’ve battled seasonal sadness every single year. I dislike grey cloudy days and freezing cold greatly! This year, our 3rd winter on the farm, I’ve decided to embrace the changing season and call it the “season of crafting”, which I hardly ever make time for... it maybe working. 😊 But these unseasonably warm days lifts my spirits so much but I know it’s a lie, ITS A LIE, as it’s only December.
