Check out this piece of gear that I built for a guy who works at one of the restaurants I frequent for lunch.
It's a clamp that will let him firmly hold onto a rake, shovel, small hand tool kind of thing with his socket interface.
This is the kind of thing that I do with some of the money I receive from Patreon. I don't usually make videos of what I build people, but he seemed ok with it, so here you go.

Times are tough for everyone out there, But if you have the means, I'd appreciate your support and put it to good use. Please support me on Patreon at: / iandavis

Actually, he lost his fingers due to cancer IIRC
@veenoir1991
@veenoir1991 4 ай бұрын
@Ulrich_dArth actually it's both. His type of cancer made his bone density extremely low. He once said he broke toes just walking, not hitting his foot on anything. Just snapped while walking. So he was doing some work (the details elude me at the moment) and something snapped that section of his hand so he went to the hospital. Then if I remember correctly, because of his recovery in chemo and a stem cell transplant combined with the still aggressive blood cancer, really weak immune system and low bone density amputation was the only reality.

In one of his videos, he explains pretty much all of this. He had actually made a prototype prosthetic hand *before* he lost his fingers as a high school science project. Later on, he severely injured his fingers in a shop machine. I wanna say it was a lathe, but I kinda forget. I believe he said he had some sort of blood cancer, which complicated any chance of proper healing, which is why he had to ultimately have his fingers amputated. I would link the video from his channel, but YT automatically filters out comments with links. Mr. Ian, if you come across my comment here, if I was incorrect about anything I said, by all means correct me.

Hey, great stuff. I gotta say I love watching you use your prosthetic. More specifically, I love to see the natural, instinctual movements you are able to get with your awesome setup. I'd love to see a video of you using your hand in a speed test to grab things or something. I'm not an amputee but thanks for all the work you do for the amputee community. Your rig seems groundbreaking and super advanced from what is the norm for analog prosthetics

All that Alex's device was, was a small rig crab clamp and 1/2-20 heim joint. I machined the clevis portion from a piece of 1.25" x 1" bar of 6061-t6 1.75" long. I also machined 0.1" ferrules on both sides of the ball to increase the angular throw of the heim. So far, he's been pretty pleased with how it's working for him.

I've been learning a lot about levers and mechanical advantage recently. Could you use a 4 bar linkage to make a really strong hand with superhuman strength?
@missingpartsclub
@missingpartsclub 3 ай бұрын
The fingers use both a parallel and crossed link setup to articulate the 270 degrees. Being that the device is body powered there's always a trade off. Your input is a constant. 57 degrees of flexion. From there it's all about what you do with that force. You can increase the grip force at the cost of overall travel of the finger. Or you could have fast moving fingers at the cost of grip. It's about finding a usable balance.
@FerociousSniper
@FerociousSniper 3 ай бұрын
@@missingpartsclub I get that. I'm currently trying to graph the mechanical advantage of locking pliers, and noticed the jaws are a 3rd order lever. I think this was intentional to allow the jaws to actually open enough to be useable at a small trade off of reducing the MA by half. If the lower jaw had been a 1st or 2nd class lever, the jaws would barely open and be entirely impractical. Still, the thought of being able to crush stuff with your bare hand is pretty cool.

I don't know that you'll see this, but I noticed a striking similarity between your injury and that of another KZbinr named Fahad Badar, who lost 4 digits on his left hand to frostbite while summiting a mountain. I wonder if it might be a worthwhile endeavor to reach out and see if he has any interest in a collaborative project.

His amputation isn't the same as mine. It's close, but after surgery, he managed to retain enough of his proximals that he is able to use the naked prosthetics mcp driver as his gear. Where he can use that gear, it allows him individual finger motion. I wouldn't be against working with him, but it seems that he's pretty set up with what he's going to use. And what I'm finding out through this trial is after someone has a style of gear that they're used to how it fits, feels, ect. It's hard to get them to try something else. Which I get. After all my time missing parts and using gear that I designed, I couldn't imagine using gear that I didn't design and build.
