More keto doctors need to be informed about this. Some are still recommending folks to eat 10 cups of raw salad for "adequate" fiber.

I think the poorly done studies of the past continue to cloud their judgement. It's hard for people to remove old beliefs even if they have evidence to the contrary. Hopefully as we continue to share, we can shift the tide with the ultimate goal of allowing individuals to feel comfortable with diets that don't have much fiber in it.

Hi dr Hampton, Interesting video! What about the meta-analyses (for instance Yang 2012) that show that fiber increases stool frequency in patients with constipation? Also van der Schoot 2022 inferring that fiber supplementation is effective against constipation? I'm curious about your thoughts on those. Thank you!
@DrTonyHampton

Yang conclusion: Conclusion: Dietary fiber intake can obviously increase stool frequency in patients with constipation. It does not obviously improve stool consistency, treatment success, laxative use and painful defecation. This meta analysis seems to suggest that there will be more bowel movements, but a lot of the other measures are not improved with dietary fiber Having more bowel movements does not equal better health, if the bowel movements are not necessary if we have less dietary fiber

I can attest to this. I've suffered from excess weight for many decades. Every time I made a commitment to lose weight, I upped my intake of vegetables, as per common myth, and each and every time I started to immediately feel bloated, and gassy, and got blocked up something terrible. Each and every time! I went on a keto diet and lost a bunch of weight. When I stalled, still needing to shed five or six kilos, I went on a carnivore diet. Lost the last stubborn weight, got rid of my hip pain, and have far more energy and a happier outlook on life. On zero carbs and zero fibre, my digestive system is working the best it has ever worked. I go every three or four days but it is a very easy process. You don't have much waste to pass so not going daily is no problem at all. The higher fat on carnivore helps things along. You only produce as much bile as needed to break down the fat the body needs, so any extra will just pass through. With hardly any other waste passing through, you can gauge if you are eating too little or too much fat. A little hard means you're not eating enough, too loose, you're eating too much. The body is a wonderful machine when you get to know it. By giving it the right fuel, you are able to understand and somewhat control how it works. Sorry if I've put too many details but we are talking about constipation or lack of it after all!

Fascinating. Not sure I believe a word but fascinating. There is fiber and there is keto, or low glycemic, or beneficial fiber that can and should be nutritionally sourced - even on a so-called Keto diet. Even the strictest originators of "keto" from back in the day, like Atkins, allowed and encouraged something like broccoli as a keto friendly vegetable that provides fiber. This has evolved to where beans, a relatively strong source of fiber, can be introduced in a "clean keto" type diet. Fiber is essential for the biome - it feeds the biome - so it is essential.

@@DrTonyHampton Don't get me wrong, Doc. I covet my weekly ribeye, but since I've moved to grass fed and finished, range and pasture raised, I find my ribeyes (real thing, not plant based) are half the size for twice the price. I also include organ meats - from cod liver - to beef organs. I've always done well by keeping most of my volumes in the fresh crucifers, sprouted/fermented vegetables/legumes, eggs and berries. It used to be a good quality egg was the best nutritional bang for your dime or two-bits. It still is, but now it's more like for your fifty cents. In California, it's more like for your buck. As we well know, the pendulum has swung back and forth on the virtues/evils of eggs a couple of times over the decades.
@DrTonyHampton
@DrTonyHampton 2 жыл бұрын
@@Franklin-pc3xd I am definitely shocked at the prices we have to pay for quality food. The community I serve in Chicago definitely find that price is a barrier to eating high quality. So for most of my patients there is a little bit of a compromise where we focus on purchasing the highest-quality food their resource will allow. As the resources increase they then have an opportunity to improve the food they are eating.

As a person living with Crohn’s Disease and UC, fiber is not what your colon or body wants or needs. It was too late for me as I lost my entire colon to Crohn’s. However, I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been at 52. I’m not 100% carnivore but please believe me, all you need to be regular and healthy is offered in grass fed/finished meats, eggs, and butter. You don’t need Keto, Paleo, or any other heavily marketed and trendy “diet”. Make some lifestyle changes. I’ve been hospitalized in the past with so many gut issues and never got relief until recently after fasting and changing my fiber situation. From what I’ve learned in my training, the more plants we eat the more diverse the microbiome needs to be to to break down the various starches and indigestible sugars in plant matter. Carnivores don’t need a diverse microbiome since animal flesh at a chemical level is nearly identical to that of another animal, so fewer species of bacteria are needed in the digestion process.
@Franklin-pc3xd
@Franklin-pc3xd 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrTonyHampton Here's the problem with that reasoning in the practical context of modern food supply chains. Animal flesh, even farm raised fish, is largely fed a diet that makes the meat unhealthy. As a practical matter, the expense of certified organic, pasture raised, grass fed and finished beef is out of reach for most people. Another fact is that when people allocate an increasing part of their overall diet with crucifers, it isn't as if they are adding a whole lot of fiber - just look at the relative fiber content of kale, red lettuce, chard, etc.

When you talk about fiber, are you also including artificial fiber (like benefiber) and fiber in whole wheats? Does that mean whole wheats are not actually good for you? I ended up being the skinniest in my adult life after I switched from bleached empty carbs to whole grains. I was told the fiber in whole grain pasta, rice and bread help digest the carbs. I noticed a difference when I no longer had diabetic pain in my feet when I switched.

@@DrTonyHampton Well, that is in odds with the title that we don't need fibre. I would need to read the whole articles to see the limitations of their findings instead of having just certain parts chosen for me. Those on keto diet also eat vegetables so they do have some fibre in that. I am a carb person and I have experienced repeatedly that not including enough fibre will make me constipated. Keto didn't do me well. So yes, each to their own, but you should not produce these click baits that we don't need fibre. As far as our history goes, we always had some fibre in our diet. And the keto diet on the population level is unsustainable. All the hens in the world don't produce enough eggs for every person on the planet to have one per day, or even every other day. Keto diet should be a disease management diet, but it is not the way we should go forward as a population.

While I agree with you, you did not say anything as to how things move in a carnivore's intestines. What is the mechanism? What is the solution for someone who has blockage?
@DrTonyHampton
@DrTonyHampton 2 жыл бұрын
Practically speaking, understanding the mechanism of why carnivores don’t get constipated is not that important. What’s important is that they don’t generally get constipated. Carnivores are highly efficient at breaking down protein due to a high acidity level in their stomachs. They therefore don’t create a lot of waste as is the case for people who eat high amounts of fiber. As long as those bowel movements are of a normal consistency when they occur, there’s no need to have bowel movement’s everyday. If a carnivore is thriving, is metabolically healthy, and not suffering from constipation, it seems logical to allow them to continue eating that way while also honoring those who consume fiber to as well 🤷🏾 If someone on a carnivore diet gets constipated I generally advise the following: 1) I start by asking my patients to be patient. It takes time to increase acid production needed to digest proteins. 2) Staying hydrated, 3) Add electrolytes (sodium potassium and magnesium) 4) Some can temporarily take bile/HCL supplements 5) Exercise

@DrTonyHampton
@DrTonyHampton 5 ай бұрын
Fiber definitely slows down digestion, and the more fiber that we have in our food unless we have to worry about sugar spikes The bigger issue is to simply reduce the starchy, sugary, high grain containing foods which leads to spikes, reducing the need to worry about fiber at all No, meat does not contain dietary fiber. Fiber is a non-digestible carbohydrate found in many plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Animal products like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy also don't contain fiber.

The average Filipino diet/meal consists of a heap of rice, a very small portion of meat,eggs , namely fatty fish,and tiny amounts of vegetables. I’m speaking from experience. My wife is like clockwork on the toilet. I’ve been constipated my entire life. I take supplements, osmotic laxatives. I’ve found skipping either a few days has no impact. Having carbs in grain form are ok. They take no energy to digest. Half your body weight in water ounces every day. I don’t need 8 bottles of water a day. Extreme athletes maybe. I’ve eaten virtually zero fiber today. Maybe 6 cups of water and I weight 260. You don’t need three meals a day. Animal fat is beneficial. We’re one of a few countries that cut it off and dispose of a valuable, high nutrient source of energy. We’re a nation obsessed with pooping every morning on the clock at all cost and we’re paying the price. I’m not anti fiber at all. Fruits and vegetables are good for us. My favorite is the promotion of eating indigestible foods like chia seeds, corn, seed nuts 😂. Anything that comes out in your poop solid is of no use. Great article.

I eat lot of fibre and i go to toilet every day and have a very healthy stole. I think it is not one of the aspects of healthy food that is the issue: it is the holistic way of living. There are more ways to healthy living: if you choose for the fibre, then you also have to choose foor food with probiotics. Because without probiotcis your body can not deal with fibre. If you choose not to eat fibre you need to choose for kero diet : because the keto diet provieds you for making the SCFA's and ketons you need to build your intestines wall. The fight between carnovoor is better then fibre or fibre is better then carnivoor is for me a lack on knowledge. There are more ways for healthy living: if you choose keto do it right , if you choose carbs do it right. The problem with people is they do not know how to eat healthy and eat carbage carbs and carbage meat and lack on important nutitions to keep the cell s and microbioom happy and healthy.

You need to resolve a constipation issue *before* ramping up fiber/fibre in your diet. Otherwise it's only going to cause a problem 😉. Then you increase the fiber/fibre content gradually. Vegetables and fruits should be the mainstay of a healthy diet, and you'll get all the fiber/fibre you need for a healthy gut

That approach is totally OK for those who want to eat fruit and vegetables but for those who have dietary patterns that don’t include fruits and vegetables it’s totally OK not to have fiber in our diet as illustrated in the study. Like that chain smoking boxer who "thrived" for many years during his career as a pro boxer, it wasn't sustainable. He died at 66. You can do a lot of unhealthy things and appear healthy for quite some time but in reality your body is slowly degrading. In other words, what you are recommending is not sustainable long term. The Inuit and Masai are case in point examples. Their life expectancies are much lower than the average. The human body can take a lot of abuse and still maintain a reasonable level of health. Fiber is a REQUIREMENT for OPTIMAL health. This is irrefutable. Can you be healthy without fiber? Ya, for a time. Can you achieve long term optimal health without fiber? No.
