It is basic courtesy to be humble and follow the rules of a foreign country we are living in but it seems like the a big portion of FTs that our country attracted are arrogant, rude, refuse to adapt to our culture and act like we owe them a living.

To be fair to taxi drivers, they will always ask you for directions even if they know their way. This is to avoid the situation whereby the passenger blames them for fare cheating by driving a different route. There are always multiple routes to a certain destination, and their choice might not always be your choice. Even google maps will give you multiple options for you to choose.

I used to have a friend who worked in food wholesale, and his company provides foodstuffs for all the supermarkets (supposedly) in Singapore - what he said was that there are "grades" of foodstuff, and Cold Storage always get the best stuff (cuz they're willing to pay for it), and NTUC Fairprice always gets the "leftovers" after other supermarkets (eg Giant) have had theirs delivered. That was how I remembered him explaining it, and why Cold Storage is the most expensive. That doesn't mean the food you get in Fairprice is rotten or old - it just means stuff like "doesn't look as nice" or "wasn't airflown from New Zealand" etc etc. As for Taxi Uncles - they ask those questions BECAUSE of fussy passengers. In order to avoid questions like "oie, why you go PIE?? KPE is faster leh!!!", they always ask passengers which way they'd like to go. It's NOT because they don't know the way - the opposite in fact - they know MULTIPLE ways, just want to know which one you prefer. If you don't want them to keep asking you, just tell them "Uncle, I dun mind. Any way you go also can" and they'll stop bothering you. If they TRULY do not know the way they would tell you upfront.
@jessical70835 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure they all get stuff from different suppliers. Also even with a common brand for eg. dettol or nestle, cold storage is much more expensive eventhough it's the exact same product.

Glad you have gotten yourself immersed in our culture and know much more of our people than an average expat. Hope you have enjoyed your time here. It's true that in order to enjoy the country, you need to know the people and their cultures to appreciate the country's uniqueness, be it good or bad. It is the software that makes the country, not just the hardware, and a true judgement of the country is its people who either give a guest a good or bad impression that will make them want to come bad or not. We hope we have given you plenty of reasons to stay or come back. Thank you for sharing your keen observations of us.

I’m glad you are enjoying living in Singapore Georgia, I normally visit Singapore once a year to visit family, because my Mother was born in Singapore. The amount of things to see & do there is incredible & it’s so easy to get from one place to another, the public transport is first class in Singapore, I love going on the MRT & enjoy going to Sentosa Island. One dislike I have with Singapore is so crowded!, especially at shopping malls & in the MRT, it seems every time I visit Singapore it gets more crowded. Also the amount of plastic bags in Supermarkets, even when your only getting one or two items they put it in a plastic bag for you, where I live in Australia, there are no plastic bags anywhere anymore. And I hate when there is a thunderstorm in Singapore, because I’m really scared of the thunder, I know I am a bit of a chicken at times! 😛

What’s interesting is that, it wasn’t always like that when I was younger. Most taxi drivers used to be the Google Map of Singapore before Google Map was even a thing. I think it’s a combination of reasons why taxi drivers appear to be less knowledgeable about Singapore’s road: 1. Singapore is ever changing. Every few years, routes changed, tourist attractions changed, new highways built, landmarks changed, even the MRT lines have increased. 2. Taxi drivers used to be the king of roads in Singapore. Every smallest road and places in Singapore, they’ll know how to manoeuvre. As a result, some taxi drivers took advantage of their ability and chose the longest route so that they can earn more. With the rise of more educated, more outspoken Singaporeans, together with Singapore’s push towards better service, there were many complains about taxi drivers allegedly taking long routes, even though most of the drivers are just earning an honest living and not necessarily used the longest route on purpose. To prevent any arguable dispute, drivers were encouraged to ask the passengers if they have a particular route and follow the passengers’ instructions.

Singapore is so small yet so big.. there are bound to be places that we as Singaporeans are unaware of, nevertheless, do hope you will continue living here, get permanent residence if possible... The taxi uncle you say - let me enlighten you. If you direct him, you can't made a complaint later that he overcharged by taking a longer route. A visit to LTA (Land Transport Authority) offices to answer a passenger complaint investigation is no joke due to the many hours involved. Same reason you are asked to specify the route, via highway or through town. The best advice is to say "take the faster route".

Cold Storage is outright slaughter and daylight robbery. Fairprice is not cheap either. Try Sheng Siong or local wet markets. Quality of food is much better too. By the way, those born before 1970s did not grow up with a maid or domestic helper. There were “Ah Ma” or nannies then but not maids. Hiring domestic helpers becomes a trend only in the 80s.

I quite enjoy watching your channel...I think I have already watched quite a few and maybe a few things I like to clarify to give you a better understanding. Some points are related to issues you brought up in your other videos but I will summarise them here ( if I can recall what they are): 1) Part of a taxi driver responsibility is always to ask the customer which way he or she prefers to go by. This is drill into their head during their training. There are all kinds of customers and some will pick a quarrel with the driver over the route taken as some may think they know a shorter route. 2) Your difficulty with our form of English may be due to the fact that there are now many foreigners working in our service line and believe me some of them do not speak that well which even we local have problem speaking to them. So to you they may look Singaporean but they may be from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, India, MYUNMA,etc. But I have to admit that our Singlist is a challenge for tourist and other foreigners. 3) Choaping or reserve of seats at hawker centre was never part of my era culture and I think this started only by the later generation. I'm from the babyboomer era. But yes we used to Choap it with our bags or umbrellas but not tissues or name cards. I was not use to it too. Hee hee. 4) Sharing of spoon in the office ...no my generation don't do that...no way hee hee..even if i want to I know my fellow colleagues will not hee hee. That's all for now as much as I can remember those points I wanted to bring up. Last but not least I like your attitude in wanting to mix around with the locals and get to know our culture more. I hope you continue to enjoy your stay here and of course your boy friend Justin as well. Cheers!

Perhaps I should push myself to ask an expat out on a date. 🤔🤔🤔 Note: Download the comfort delgro applications. Use that app to get around at a cheaper rate and it comes with GPS for the cab driver. Also, there's the "flat rate" option which makes it even more cheap and appealing.
@showified5 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree on the point that you mentioned about people being unwilling to travel to another end of Singapore just because they are living at the other end. Haha. Although I won't deny that I think so too when I was much younger and still at times am lazy to take transport to places that are too far. But after travelling, my mindset sure has changed over the years. There are so many countries out there that are so much bigger and requires more time + effort to get to another place. Reminds me of when my friend shared about her experience studying in London, that her school was quite far from the city area and in order to return back she had to be at a waiting point at only certain stated times for the available bus which will take 2-3 hours ride if I did not remember wrongly. Have also heard from relatives that it is so hard to get a taxi anywhere in some other countries! So I guess sometimes we Singaporeans gotta be thankful for what we have too before complaining, that there are other places out there that have it less convenient than us. Regarding the point on Grab or cab driver asking which route to take, I get that alot too. But I reckon sometimes as there may be different routes that could be taken to destination, they would just check first in case you have a preferred route (eg. exit from which road that you know have lesser traffic lights or avoid taking which road that you always see traffic jam there so you would rather take another road, usually when going to places that you are more familiar with),they are just worried of being accused later for taking a longer route and getting complaints to their co. from passengers. Usually I will just tell the driver that I'm fine with any route just go by the fastest way, or if unfamiliar I will just tell them so then just go by the way they know or follow GPS. If some some still ain't sure of the place you are heading to probably because it is uncommon, I will google map and zoom to see if there is any more well known landmark/building/mall/hawker centre etc nearby and tell them to drive there first then later assist them with the directions easier. Just hope it can help anyone a little. Thanks for reading. I keep typing that I almost forgot that I want to say congrats for living 3.5 years here, hope you keep enjoying your journey here while discovering more of our culture. Love your content Georgia. :)

Taxi drivers do know how to get to your destination. However the roads they use isn't always the most optimal route, which often end up costing more and you know how Singaporeans enjoy saving every single cent. That's why the driver will usually ask if you have a preferred route especially if you look like you know your way around town. You can tell them to go whichever way they prefer if you do not want to micromanage the route they use.

Thus we don’t mix as much because our lifestyle expenditure differs. Take regular casual drinking for eg. i believe many locals like me will just get some alcohol from ntuc and chill out somewhere while many bars and pubs I’ve come by are usually filled with non-locals. Or we’ll go for the more affordable places. Could be said the same for dining and leisure options too. In general.
