seconds seems dope asfrk... i couldnt get rhrough wanda not bc it was bad but it was just making me so bummed out its so desolate

yooo Seconds is a lot of fun! curious to know what you think of it. and i had the same issue with Wanda! started it years ago and then came back to it. interesting to describe it as desolate because when i think of anyone else who captures the emptiness of american land, i think of Wim Wenders, but was so intrigued that Loden captured america as wasteland instead of glorified land (Wenders).

Great to see you expanding to film commentary! I'm also a fan of David Lynch. You might be interested in reading his memoir Room to Dream. I read it a few years ago and found it very illuminating in regards to the evolution of his art. (I seem to always overwrite when I comment on your vlogs, sorry) One last thing: I can't help but wonder if you have a membership to the Criterion Collection streaming service? So many of the films you mention seem like they'd be there. I've been debating with myself for months on whether or not to get a membership. Anyway, thought I'd mention it in the event you're not aware they offer a streaming service. Again, thanks for another great vlog, Nate!

been meaning to read this and more of Lynch's writing for forever!!! it was not too long ago that i realized that he also does multi-media work in sculpture and photography! i share a subscription to criterion and mubi with a friend to cut costs! a lot of good watches on both platforms. i think if you and a friend both love older films, they're both great platforms :) also which is your favorite Lynch film!!!

I like thissssss. One of the reasons I watch booktube is to discover books I would’ve never sought out myself. And my film tastes are extremely pronounced and specific and so I would’ve never sought these out but you piqued my interest 🧐 btw the kernel within all these movies you’re watching, the capitalism we can’t get out of: that’s been my reading theme!!!!! (But in my books there’s always a way out) specifically “LOVESTAR” and “the machine stops” and I’m about to read “Paris au XXe siècle” from Jules Verne which I think goes in the same direction. Dunno cuz I haven’t read it yet but…I love the same kernel.
@nathansnook2 ай бұрын
what an incredible stack of books you’re deep into! funny how our thematic learnings align, just in different mediums! glad to know we are trying to understand these issues through art, at the same time, just in different ways 💫

Great video! So many films on this list I had never even heard of. One note: The real life Joseph Merrick (AKA The Elephant Man) was not trampled by an elephant, he was born with a growth disorder, most likely Proteus syndrome. The sequence at the start of the David Lynch film is just a dream scene exploring this title he was given.
@nathansnook2 ай бұрын
oh! thank you for this correction! and thank you for the explanation of the dream sequence. loved how he started the film with this bit of surrealism.

There's a super good book on Wanda, it's called Suite for Barbara Loden. Loved it at the time I read it.

I watched Inland Empire for the first time yesterday and really appreciated that 80% of its visuals were closeup shots of Laura Dern looking distressed lol Have you seen Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me? It's my favorite Lynch film and I think it's a great watch even if you haven't seen any of the show
@nathansnook2 ай бұрын
HAHAHA Dern doing the most with all of her distress. also love how claustrophobic it always feels when he does zoom-ins and i have not, but plan to this year! i have his daughter’s book, which she wrote as a response to the film/show - loved the show though! have you watched the show in its entirety? i stopped somewhere in the middle of season 2 lol
@johnoliver5952 ай бұрын
@@nathansnook I have! And stopping midway through the second season was a wise choice, I think even David Lynch would agree with that lol I actually haven't read any of the Twin Peaks books but they're on my list!

Call Me By Your Name is such a perfect way to start your summer! Love. Love. Love. Watched it for the first time when I was way too young. Lol. But I'm still obsessed, absolutely consumed by it. I always love seeing what others are watching-especially if it's like super alt recs. 💜💜💜
