I understand where you’re coming from with Funny Games “what’s the point” but it’s totally about that. It’s an exercise in holding the audience captive and pushing what they are willing to sit through, and destroying every expectation. It’s a masterpiece imo and clear evidence that Haneke has absolute mastery of the form when he wants to.

Watched every Miyazaki-written film from Cagliostro to The Wind Rises this month to get ready for The Boy and The Heron. The Castle of Cagliostro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Wind Rises were as great as I remembered; I was underwhelmed [but didn't hate] My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's, and Nausicaa; Whisper of the Heart was a great but was unintentionally hilarious because of the heavy use of 'Country Roads'; Arrietty, Ponyo, and From Up On Poppy Hill were movies my partner and reviews said were mid/bad but I ended up loving because of the aesthetics of the locations even if the stories were light; and Porco Rosso is my new favorite Miyazaki film. It feels like The Wind Rises meets The Castle of Cagliostro in the best way and seems like it incorporates all of Miyazaki's favorite elements in one place and it seems like the film he had the most fun making and that energy is super infectious. I'm already planning to have a 'Tre Rossi' viewing party in December - three films with 'Rosso' in the name back to back, leading with the two giallo films Deep Red [Profondo Rosso] and Hatchet for the Honeymoon [Il rosso segno della follia/"The Red Sign of Madness"] then finishing with Porco Rosso as a palate cleanser.

Here's what I watched: Die Hard - It's Die Hard Barbie - 3.5/5. It was entertaining, but I can't think of the last time I saw a movie with such polarizing opinions where I found myself kind of in the middle. Spirited Away - 5/5. Saw it for the first time as part of GhibliFest, and it is now tied for my favorite, along with Porco Rosso and Castle in the Sky. It just feels like magic. The Rocketeer - 4/5. Really nothing special on a storytelling level, but it is so classically charming and executed really well. And that was it. I didn't watch many movies, cuz I was working on a book. Except for the first hour or so of Sandlot and Coco that I had to show at my job as a substitute teacher (...4 and 4.5, respectively)

Yeah it’s about the world and the beauty. Though it’s pretty close, she didn’t make a biopic. There are a few small? Or perhaps overarching plots of coming of age in that world. And some historical plots. But it’s supposed to be dissociative in a way and it’s a very feminine film beyond the aesthetics. I don’t know if it would be as good out as beautiful if it had more plot structure or a typical biopic structure.

So, quite a few this month for me: Saw III: Was a little switched off during this and IV, but you know it's a Saw movie, it had some entertaining traps. Also had one really cool surgery scene that had me interested. Saw IV: Probably my least favourite Saw so far. Opening scene had some great effects, but the rest of the film didn't get that invested it. It's just a bit convoluted at we're only at IV. Chicken Run: Watched this the day before I saw the premiere of the sequel the next day. As always the film is is perfect. Genuinely one of the best films I've ever seen. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: For a sequel that came 20+ years after the first, with quite a few recasts in the mix, this film was amazing. While it could never be as good as the first I had a great time from start to finish. Still funny, still has a dark edge this was film was worth being made. Trick R Treat: Hadn't seen this one in years, and it was a little worse than I remembered it was. Still fun though, and loves to embrace the holiday. Saw V: Another saw entry I sort of zoned out of. Again I kind of preferred the slightly more simple first film over the sequels. I'm just not that interested in Hoffman or Strahm. Prevenge: Been meaning to watch this for a while. It follows Alice Lowe (who I knew from Horrible Histories) as a pregnant woman urged on by her unborn baby to kill people. It's not perfect but it's really interesting and worth checking out. (bonus points for Mike Wozniac appearing in it) Saw X: Since it was cheap at the cinema I made the leapt from V to X. And I had a great time with this one. While there's less traps than the average saw, Tobin Bell gives a fantastic performance. Also fun to see a victim who's about as crazy and evil as Jigsaw is. M3gan: I'd seen this back in January and this was still really good. Creepy and funny in equal amounts. Made my Dad watch it who also really enjoyed himself. Now I just need to see the unseen version that's also on the DVD. This month I've also been watching the final series of the BBC sitcom Ghosts. It's an excellent show and if you haven't checked it out, please do. It's the perfect demonstration of how British comedy makes you cry & think as much as laugh.

What I Watched October Edition: House on Haunted Hill- 3/5 I started this month with a little Vincent Price horror film that a friend recommended to me, I liked it well enough, but I think it could have been way better. I think if they leaned more into the atmosphere and the haunted house vibe I would like it a lot more, instead, it’s just a decently fun cheesy old horror movie with some great scenes. Vincent Price is incredible though, per usual… Dracula - 3/5 A classic horror film with a fantastic atmosphere and some great scares, but ultimately has a lot of issues. The first half in Transylvania is great, and even some of the London stuff is good, but it slowly becomes repetitive and slow, there are some stand out scenes, but by the end I was confused and the ending seemed anti-climatic. Maybe I missed a scene, but they didn’t actually show the death of Dracula, he just was killed and then the movie ended. I liked it well enough, some amazing scenes, but overall kind of just fine. Stephen King’s IT - 3/5 A fun enough 90s flick with the classic clown tale, music is good, actings ok, effects are kinda eh, but some are fun. Way too long, some random/awkward moments. The ending is really bad, but some parts with the kids are pretty good. Tim Curry is fantastic per usual. The Pit and the Pendulum - 4/5 I decided I was going to try to watch Roger Corman’s Poe Cycle and I started with this one. I loved it, I had a great time here, Vincent Price is amazing, the supporting actors are good, the setting and atmosphere are great, and the plot is awesome. Overall just a fun classic horror movie. The Raven - 4/5 Another Corman Poe film, completely different from the title poem, a fun and entertaining wizard film more comedic than horrifying, but not in a bad way. The castle, lighting, weather, etc are all there for the atmosphere and vibe, but it’s funny instead of scary. I enjoyed it a lot. Le Samourai- 5/5 I absolutely loved this film. I thought the shot framing and composition was incredible, the way the camera moved and was apart of the story was amazing. Alain Delon is incredible, the score is amazing. I loved everything about it. I adore this movie and it’s most likely one of my new favorites. The King of Comedy- 4/5 I really dug this one, a disturbing drama with an incredible performance from Robert De Niro. I just thought it was great. The scene of him on the show was easily my favorite part, I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Guardians of the Galaxy- 4.5/5 I loved this one. It was everything I needed it to be and wanted it to be. An instant classic. Easily one of the best mcu movies and superhero movies. Poltergeist - 3.5/5 I liked this one a lot. The atmosphere and score were great. I thought some scenes really stood out. But it was a bit slow and not scary. I still really enjoyed it though. Barry Lyndon - 5/5 First time watch for me. I loved this. Period pieces aren’t always my thing. But I adored this one. I love everything about this. Five Nights at Freddy’s - 1.5/5 I did not like this at all. I am not a fan of the fnaf games, but I thought I might still be able to enjoy the movie, it should be fun horror. But it was not fun. I’m okay with it being not super scary, I’m not scared too easily, but still, something. Idk if I would even say this was creepy. One or two scenes were. But it was not there. The script was abysmal, the acting was eh, well besides one person… the direction was not great. It felt pretty amateurish and not creative. Some of the animatronic work was decent, they were not cgi, so that was great. I think the only redeeming thing for me though is Matthew Lillard. He is having so much fun in this movie. Obviously it’s not Oscar worthy or anything, but he’s a pretty cool guy and it seemed like he enjoyed this role. Spring trap was also pretty good, the suit looked cool, and one or two of his parts were creepy. Including his ending. The rest of the ending is eh for me, but spring trap and the other animatronics endings is decent. Overall, bad, but with one or two parts I thought were fine.

I went to the London Film Festival and saw Boy and the Heron and Maestro. Both were good, but I did find the former to be a disappointment the more I thought about it, found it rather messy at the end

Funny Games is supposed to be anti-horror film. That is why character breaks the 4th wall. The point of film is just that, uncomfortable horror for horror film buffs.

funny, because mescals story didn't work for me in the end at all, but I really like "all of us strangers", especially Jamie bells performance, so I've decided to only think about Paul mescals butt and nothing else.

Remember Karsten, Stick to the plan. Anticipate, don’t improvise. Trust no one. Never yield an advantage. Make only the video you’re paid to make. Forbid empathy. Empathy is weakness. Weakness is vulnerability. Each and every step of the way ask yourself, “What’s in it for me?” This is what it takes. What you must commit yourself to if you want to succeed. Simple.
