What I Wish I Knew About Majoring In Chemistry

The chemistry major is extremely hard and complex and there are a lot of things that go with a major like that. I hopped head first into my chem major and although it turned out well there are a lot of things that I learned along the way about the chemistry major and STEM majors that I wish I knew. I would not change my chemistry major as I love science and STEM but knowing some of this stuff could have made the path a lot easier if I had someone to tell it to me when I first declared my major. So I hope this video makes your chemistry path easier and I wish you luck on picking chemistry as your major! Majoring in chem is super fufilling if you get it right.

1. Start taking prerequisites for a chemistry major FRESHMAN YEAR 2.The Salary for a Bachelor's in Chemistry will be pretty low without work experience (go to grad school) 3.Chemistry is a difficult degree- don't expect to easily succeed with flying colors when you're (sometimes) overloading yourself with a bunch of difficult classes 4.PROFESSOR CHOICE MAKES OR BREAKS YOUR CLASS!!!! Get advice from upperclassmen! 5. Chemistry is time-consuming, but make time to do things outside of chem so you don't get burned out. I'm a chem major and I agree with all of these.

I'm a junior in undergrad recently struggling with my chemistry major. I was having doubts about finding a job in the future and what career goals I wanted to set for myself after I graduate. I love the stem field but I was feeling a little overwhelmed and disappointed from the results I was finding about careers. I am learning programming to switch careers from working in the field of chemistry. I kinda regretted majoring in chemistry over the past few years but this video def makes me feel prideful in my past decision to be a chemist. Thanks for that 🙏🏽

Chemistry can be a super fulfilling and challenging major but not always the best career choice. Luckily there are a lot of problem solving and critical thinking skills you learn in it that transfer over to many different fields.

I think chemistry is a relatively demanding undergraduate degree. Although the good news about this is it will make you stand out in application processes. I did my degree in Biological Chemistry, and this made me stand out when applying for a doctorate program in a healthcare field. While everyone else had kinesiology degrees, I had a degree that made me unique during the application process.

I had the same doubts about ChemE after I graduated, I wished I researched better because the industry is not where it’s at anymore. The market in STEM is going towards CS/Software Engineering. Don’t believe the hype, ChemE pays well but not as well as they’d lead you on to believe. My thermo/fluid dynamics prof was an absolute nightmare, he was known for making people switch majors, and seemed to relish in his students failures, he was an absolute dirt bag if you guessed correctly. I think he was removed because enough students complained about him to the dean & student appeals board, it’s a double edged sword but I love that universities are making it near impossible nowadays for profs to obtain tenure, it’s a great tool to prevent lazy homesteading of dirt bag employees from playing the system. I’d tell anyone at this point, if you want to make a great living, go into healthcare, Nursing, MD, PA. They all pay better than most engineering/science jobs right out the gate.

yeah in 5-10 years I'd expect there to be a shortage in chemists everywhere considering the type of person that would have used to study chemistry is now mainly going into CS / Programming
