Great video about Spartanburg; however the thumbnail does not give a good impression. The 7 colleges in Spartanburg are Wofford, Converse, Spartanburg Methodist, Spartanburg Community College, USC-Upstate, Sherman Chiropractic College and VCOM. The traffic light control boxes downtown are decorated with themes of the colleges. Spartanburg is also home to the SC School for the Deaf and Blind and the I Love You monument shown at 1:11 is thought to be the only monument celebrating deaf culture to be located in a town square in the US. Other developments underway include a planetarium at the public library headquarters. It will be only the 2nd planetarium at a library in the US and will have the largest dome in the upstate, a Foucault Pendulum and a maker lab named after Spartanburg native Kitty Black Perkins who designed the first black Barbie Doll. Spartanburg used to be a major railroad hub, hence the nickname Hub City and today it has the only active train tunnel in the state. Besides the walking trails there are also Hatcher Garden, the Edwin M. Griffin Nature Preserve, Milliken Park and Arboretum and Glendale Shoals. Spartanburg County has launched a program called Re-Degree to help people with some college education finish their degrees.

The Spartanburg police recently solved a cold case, the rapes of 13 women between 1995 and 2003. As they had a DNA sample but no matches, they turned to a librarian/ genealogist for assistance and used genetic genealogy to identify and apprehend the rapist. He was convicted and this was first instance in SC history of someone being convicted of crime through the use of genetic genealogy. BTW, for years the wife of Spartanburg’s police chief was the police chief in Winston-Salem, NC.
