Let the buyer beware! I was delivered an agitator-free top loading machine two years ago after the big box seller”ran out” of the model I bought and offered me “an upgrade to a better machine.” I should have known better. The theory behind agitator-free washers is that the friction of the fabrics sloshing against each other will render them clean. My brothers and sisters, this is a lie. For two years I meticulously followed the somewhat complicated instructions for running one of these machines, and for two years my clothes became dingier and grayer and sadder. I tried a range of detergent and booster combos hoping to solve the issue through chemistry, but that did not help. I tried washing every load twice. Nope. I finally lost my patience. I went to a used appliance warehouse and bought an old Kenmore with an agitator for $250. I emptied the closets and bureaus and began washing. Lo and behold, I now have sparkling clean clothes, the whites are white again instead of gray, and everything smells and feels actually clean again. My advice is to be very skeptical about the agitator-free top loaders.

Thanks for this video. I really like information about heat pump dryers getting out there. While more expensive up front, I have already saved money in my first year by not paying for vent cleaning in my condo (generally required about every 2 years), and by saving a lot in electricity (I have been using spreadsheets to track usage after I got my LG stacked washer/dryer). What is remarkable is that over a 10-year period I see the heat pump dryer as eventually paying for itself. The heat pump dryer takes a little longer to dry a load (about 20 minutes on average), but it is gentler on the clothes. The very fast spin cycle on the front loader LG washer helps with drying, as more water is wrung out before drying. Opening the dryer door lets out a puff of humidity, and it seems like the clothes are a bit damp, but this is just lingering humidity and dissipates in a minute. The clothes soon feel perfectly dry (no static) and I put them away just minutes after removing them from the heat pump dryer. I got the compact 24 inch LG units, stacked, as those were the best fit for my small condo unit, except for needing to put in a new 120V outlet (need a 240 and a 120 for the two machines, as my previous old-school Whirlpool washstation used only a 240V outlet). Recently, LG came out with a compact 24-inch washtower, which I would have preferred, although they still require separate 120V and 240V outlets. The regular LG washtowers are 27 inch, which would work for many apartments, but it's nice to have the 24 inch options. Otherwise, I am only aware of the compact European brands, Bosch and Miele, that have a good reputation in this area, with some extra features and flexibility. Like LG, GE has a next generation all-in-one washer/heat pump dryer, but I think these next generation models need to have a few years of real-world use behind them before I would be comfortable buying one. Separate heat pump dryers and front-loaders have a longer track record around the world, with most design issues sorted out. I also did a lot of research, and found that LG has a good reputation for washers and dryers (less so with other kitchen appliances, such as problems with some models of LG fridges). For heat pump dryers in Canada there are not too many options yet, and the Bosch I looked at was more expensive. The LG washers/dryers require ongoing care to maximize their longevity, and the software provides reminders, such as tub cleaning for the washer and condenser cleaning for the heat pump dryer, as well lint trap cleaning alerts. I leave all the doors and dispensers open a little between uses so everything airs out properly. I can see these as being a little complicated for leaving with renters or casual users, and some minor features work only with a phone app. But overall, these two machines checked a lot of boxes for my needs. It does seem though that more heat pump models are coming out, and are getting even better. That's a win-win for cost-saving and for the environment. And the LG washer/dryer set I got is also more quiet than my old 20-year old washstation-- one more plus!

The heat pump is also a great idea for those who have a funky dryer venting system. I would never buy a house unless the laundry was on an exterior wall directly vented outside but for those who have those 30 foot snaking thru crawl space dryer ducts or 20 feet up thru the attic, a heat pump would be ideal. Dryers aren’t meant to push lint, moisture and air UP or along long spans of ducting and that can lead to premature failure of your dryer or fire due to lint build up since the dryer can’t push it out.

One item a lot of folks don't realize is that is does not take much detergent to wash your clothes. Most use a cap full for each load, but that is not necessary. I use maybe 10%-20% of a cap full per load because that is all that is needed. A bottle of detergent will usually last me a year which is great for cost savings not to mention better for the environment.

The washer and dryer in my home are not efficient. I have decided to keep them, but will use for smaller loads. The dryer has to be run multiple times to be certain items are thoroughly dry. The washer pushes sheets and towels to the edge of the drum, twisting the fabrics so that they do not get a proper rinse. The plan is to add a larger capacity set to handle sheets, towels, comforters, bulky items. Not the same brand, of course. Will have to install more connections but I will be happier as I do laundry nearly everyday. Thanks for this great information. You are always so helpful.

Before this, I had a pair of Samsung machines (save your money!) and had them stacked. I was forever hitting my head on the dryer door, so believe me when I say that I love this feature. It seems much sturdier compared to 2 separate machines stacked together. I don't seem to have as much problem with the vibration or noise that I had with Samsung, either. If I could have, I'd have gone with something without the computer screen, but there were very limited options for the space I have to work with, and I would have sacrificed the capacity. I live in an apartment which has a washer and dryer. While that's very nice, the original washer and dryer (Maytag top load full size) were great. I loved them! A couple years ago, they decided to replace all washers and dryers with cheap G.E. front load. The capacity is small and when the washer spins, the whole building shakes. Things fall off shelves and worst of all, if something is bulky or heavy, the washer can't spin it properly and shuts off, so you end up with dripping wet items. Last week I washed my bath mat and it came out very wet. I never tumble dry them, so I hung it over the edge of the tub to dry. It took DAYS to dry because of no spinning. Do yourselves a favor and get top loading washers!

@@cleanmyspace I would LOVE to add an extra spin. Unfortunately, I can't add one to the existing cycles which are numerous, and the only way to spin afterwards is "rinse and spin", which of course doesn't help. They stopped making replacement parts for it 4-5 years ago, so I had to get a new unit. (The matching dryer still works though - hoping for the best!) I like my new washer OK. My biggest issue is that there is almost no documentation, with the unit or on the manufacturer's website; I requested information & they sent me a PDF that I already had which was no help. I don't want to know "this cycle is for towels" - I want to know what the cycle does: fill, wash/agitate, spin, fill, rinse/agitate, spin ... Why do they not give you that information? Why does the interface go right from "Wash" to "Done"? I do not have time to stand next to the washer and write down for myself what it's doing. A proper user manual would make all the difference.

I had a traditional side-by-side washer and dryer until my washer broke. Someone I knew had a stackable set they weren't using anymore, so I took it and sold my dryer. The stackable is not convenient, has vibrated the drain hose out of the hole repeatedly, resulting in flooded floors. The capacity of both the washer and the dryer are small compared to a standard set, and drawstring pants or dryer sheets are constantly getting stuck around the edges of the lint trap. It takes about twice as long to dry a load of laundry that would have taken about 30 minutes in my old dryer. The price was right(FREE), but I will never again have a stackable set.

Vented clothes dryers expel the heated air through a vent that exits the building. Lint can build up in these vents, and so the vents need to be cleaned periodically (they are also a fire hazard if the lint is not cleared in the pipes). Ventless dryers are of two types. Older versions were "condenser dryers" which create hot air to condense water, and the water is moved into either into a reservoir that needs to be emptied by hand, or moved out through water drain (usually the same drain that the washing machine uses). There is no vent for the air to the outside needed, and so ventless dryers can more easily be placed in different areas of a home. The newer type of ventless dryer is a "heat pump dryer", which is very energy efficient as it moves heat from the surrounding air into a refrigerant in a closed loop which concentrates the heat to dry clothes. A ventless heat pump dryer, like a condenser dryer, also moves the water into a reservoir or out a water drain. Heat pumps are used in many applications (a refrigerator uses the same concept, drawing heat from inside the fridge and moving it outside). Heat pumps are increasingly seen as effective ways to heat and cool homes, as they move existing heat through a compressor and expansion valve, and they use only a relatively small amount of electricity to operate. Ventless heat pump dryers take longer to dry clothes, but newer models are better as they use several techniques to speed up drying time.

Have the LG washtower thin. Because of space . Works perfect, been 3 years zero problems.

It's a video I did in partnership with LG, so I have used their machines to review the types of washers and dryers!

To be fair, all the top rated machines on Consumer Reports are also LG 🤷🏻♀️

We are having to replace our expensive 5 yr old LG refrigerator...condenser died. Not going with LG brand for anything.

This is just an ad for LG. I buy Bosch no matter what, they always last longer and parts are readily available where i live. The less "electronic" features a machine has, the less to go wrong too!
@cleanmyspaceАй бұрын
Yes - well, I do say that in the video - I partnered with LG for this. I've been using their machines since 2014, so I've had a lot of experience with them. I know many folks hold your opinion about the less technical machines. That said, I do think some of the more exciting features of these higher tech machines are not to be missed!

My 7 year old LGs have worked great until a button broke on my dryer. I found out LG discontinued the part after only 5 years. Totaled the machine. Won’t buy another LG.

My brother bought a top load with basically no agitator it is crap doesn't clean well and the suspension springs went bad after 2 yrs making it unbalanced don't buy one please it's a whirlpool.
@latmcb9863Ай бұрын
Another con to the combination is not being able to have a load in the dryer and another one in the washer at the same time.

I agree - I think for large families it may not make sense, but for singles or couples, it might be good if you don't have a ton of laundry to do at any given time.

LG is such a crap brand for laundry appliances and kitchen.
@cleanmyspaceАй бұрын
I disagree - I’ve had them for years and they’ve been great. Seriously, that’s why I’ve been so happy to work with them year after year.

@@cleanmyspace disagreeing doesn't change a thing. Samsung and LG are just as bad. The industry repair and replace statistics contradict your personal anecdotal experience.

@@wordsofjamesI can attest for Samsung being the worst . All my appliances came with the house I bought 2 years ago. I have one completely dead Samsung refrigerator, one Samsung dryer that barely dries (I often have to keep drying a load for up to 2 hours - and it left rust stains on a new set of beige sheets) , and one Maytag Bravos washer (top load , no agitator , “smart water level”), that, thanks to barely spitting water on clothes , seems to make them dirtier . The kitchen aid dishwasher smelled like it was burning things one night , and has broken plastic bits of itself on the bottom , so I just don’t use it . I cannot wait to do a full replacement of all of these things , but now I don’t trust ANYTHING anymore

Just bought the all in one combo and love it. I have a small walk through utility and needed a space saving design and could not go vertical so the stacked was not an option. Also I’m notorious for forgetting my wash and not putting it into the dryer; this saves me. Love the design and all the smart features. Increased dry time is not an issue foe me as I live alone. Large families with increased laundry needs may have issues with this.
