I have to thank you for the reminder regarding training... "Two steps backwards." Got a 2.5 year old Lab/Boxer rescue and most of the time she's a gem! I named her Kitty... aka Ding-Dong, (for when she's acting like a homeless poster child doggy ditz!) And aka... "Mutt" for when I'm annoyed with her and she needs a serious "Com'mon Mutt" command. I've had her for 2.5 months as of this message and your reminder about good days and bad hair training days couldn't be truer! She's with me 24/7 and we walk/train at least 5 times a day, (each walk is also a training session). The other day she was a mess! It was like she forgot everything we've done up to that point? Forgot what sit meant, wait meant pull, right side meant veer left... I was going out of my mind! Got back in the yard and she wanted to play, and that we did! Later that day ran to Petco and you talk about being on her "A" game! Every isle I said wait, and she stopped. The clerk was watching at how well she listened and payed attention. I then gave her hand commands to sit and stay so I could converse and without skipping a beat, she sat like a little queen. I bring this out to thank you for your training encouragement and to let others know that might be in the same situation to not give up! As for "Ding-Dong," she was back to her antics this afternoon, but a neighbor stopped us during our walk and she performed like a champ! We still have a big work-on as a service dog though... "Help, I've fallen and can't reach my beer!" She just wants to lap it all down! j/k Thanks again, Sincerely Mike & ???? :)

I got my service dog from a nonprofit. I had to raise $25,000 for him. I’m definitely going to be looking into either different places or possibly owner training my next SD. My SD is 2 1/2 years old so hopefully we will have a long working life together ❤️🐕‍🦺

I got my service dog from a shelter, when I got her I actually had no plans in making her a service dog but here we are! lol,! she is a German shepherd beagle mix and definitely the smartest dog I have ever owned.

My Psychiatric Service Dog, coco, is a welsh sprocker spaniel so she is not too big or too small for me she's still I'm training and struggles with a few things including her vest not all service dogs love their vests and for coco she's happier with a harness and cape instead which works for me because due to my anxiety I can sometimes get a bit wobbly so a semi-rigid handle works wonders but I never even thought about what gear was god for us!

I have had very positive public access experiences with my SDiT except by 2 people. They didn’t know the law and gave me a bad time. Hope they will not give me a hard time again now that I have informed them what the laws are in Texas. When people see her they always comment how well behaved and cute she is. She is vey small but that is just fine since she can still do her job as a medical alert dog. As far as packing for 2 that is so true for us it is a lot like having a new baby at home since she suddenly needs to go out to go potty and it tends to be about 2 hours before the alarm goes off. I am so pleased with how she is doing and she is already alerting before I have been able to train her so she is a natural on top of it. Thank for sharing

I went on my first trip with my SDIT this weekend. I packed a full duffel bag mainly for my dog. It was filled to the brim. Unfortunately I wish I could say I am lying when I say that. Well, we ran into a dog that was openly labeled as an emotional support animal and the aquarium asked the two legal questions. Reminding me that she couldn’t be an emotional support animal playing as a service dog even though her patches said service dog and I had a tag saying stop service dog in training on my bag. This dog was 4 feet away from the handler and attached to the vest. The handler didn’t correct at all. But I was in a different city so I didn’t question especially since they were booking it to the exit when we seen them.

That most likely will be a problem unfortunately. A lot of places won't place a programme dog with other pet dogs and being not so stable is definitely a bad thing for a dog to go into. Sorry I know that's not what you want to here but the home situation needs to be stable before a dog will be placed, anywhere that doesn't care about stability or other pets is probably somewhere to avoid :/ Are you close to being old enough to leave home any time soon? I reckon you'd have a better shot at getting an sd if you get your own place but I also get that's not always easy when you have problems:(

I’m looking into getting a service dog and I’d love to know what the average amount of time you train each day in the beginning!
@raysofrosie
@raysofrosie Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you’re getting them for. For me mine is going to multipurpose and will be for seizure alert/ response, autism, and PTSD. We’re just working on the basics (public access and basic behavior) and luckily mine has already somehow taught himself to alert to my seizures so we’re just trying to train him how to alert me to them (other than just whining, getting anxious, or just flat out trying to knock me down by forcing his weight behind my knees lol) and that alone has already taken almost a year (he just turned 1 on dec 29,2022 and we started training when he was around 2mo). The good thing is that a lot of the things you teach SDs can be crossed over (like DPT, Crowd control, item retrieval, alerting, etc) it’s just teaching them what to look for and when it’s appropriate to perform those tasks. Not to mention the amount of training and reinforcement it takes each day (I can’t take him to work just yet so for me it’s about an hour in the morning and 1-2 hours a night of “half training” where we’re not full focused and repeating the same thing over and over until he does it but more so I’ll give him a few commands he already knows and a few he’s learning as I’m getting ready or doing something and he does them on his own so he knows to obey commands even when he’s technically “off the clock”, and then full on training on good days when we can go on walks and/or when we go shopping anywhere). It’s hard and tedious but you can either do this or save up and pay for an already trained SD for what you need. Hope this helps!

I 100% agree. Me and my husband have ESA’s. Because 1 we can’t afford SD. 2 the training for a ESA if you want to is 6months to a year. I task train mine. Just to make things easier. Another reason why we don’t want a SD is because we don’t want to take are dogs with us every where we go. Now we do use gear for are dogs. Each dog has a team collar. My dog has pink and yellow. She for my anxiety I get them so bad I tend to black out and my nose because I was born with out smell. My husband has 2 dogs one is a red and black team color. It’s for his depression. His other dog team collar is green, orange and purple. That’s for his seizures. It’s up to the owners to do there own reach and find what best works for them. This what works best for us, but it might not work for some people.

How did you get the qualification to get a service dog? I'm not talking about your disability, just, how was it diagnosed? For example, I have undiagnosed anxiety but my parents think it's just a phase so of course they don't think it's that's serious but I had two anxiety attacks today and my mum just blamed it on sleep. So, did you just go to a doctor and they suggested a SD or something? And how did your parents react to that?

Most programs don’t allow other dogs in the household because dogs pick up bad behaviors quickly from other dogs and you have to retrain your service dog
@dexterandme5544
@dexterandme5544 2 жыл бұрын
Have you considered training your own service dog with the help of a trainer? Many programs have strict regulations, including not allowing other pets in the household, or needing a stable home environment, so those things might make it more difficult for you to be accepted into a program. I am currently training my own SD. I have 2 other dogs and a cat and my trainer is not at all concerned because dogs can be trained to have their own standards despite other animals in the household not being as strictly trained. Keep in mind, though, that if any of your current pets are aggressive or in anyway can create a negative or traumatizing experience for your SD or SDiT, then THAT would definitely be considered a problem. Best of luck!

Here are some things my STID have He has 3 regular service dog vests (I plan on getting custom harness and cape soon) patches to go on the vest that say in training, it depends on the kind of training but I find that E-colors can be very helpful for many dogs it worked on my STID for a bit but it stopped working a bit ago so now we are figuring out a new way to help train, travel bowl, treats, boots, and this next thing isn’t needed but I plan on getting some ADA law cards to bring with me. Also remember that your STID or SD isn’t going to be perfect, when we bought my SD he was good for a bit but then he took some steps back and regressed a bit, we bought him to be a fully trained SD but we do have to partly retrain him so now we use the term SDIT instead of fully trained SD. It’s a big process and it’s hard to get used to but it’s gonna be worth it since it will help :)

I am legally blind and I use a power chair. I have low mobility and have some questions that I hope you can answer? * Because I have low vision and am legally blind but have other medical conditions where I can't lean down from my power chair to clean up after a Service Dog what tricks and tips are there for people who can't get close to the ground to clean up after their dog-like someone who is ambulatory but blind can do? * I have some vision but not totally blind. This presents a big issue because I can see some things one day but not everything but at the same time I need different mobility assistance? Are there any websites that I can select checkboxes of different things in detail and it can help me find different resources in my area where I can go to get more in-depth help[p? * Last and not least I have had this issue that has started me away from getting a service dog? I have seen so many businesses that either don't know the ADA law or they do know it but don't care to follow it? I have always been worried I would end up with access issues and to me that I feel has been the biggest thing that has pushed me away from even trying to get one plus being on a low fixed income has been a big one as well? Using a cane is not an option for me and I have been trying to find some electronic form of detection that would be like having a seeing-eye dog but haven't been able to find anything option? Even with limited vision, there are certain places that I still need help that I have to become the passenger or test pilot where there are curbs that don't look like curbs but yet I have had to learn the hard way at times? The reason that I have thought about an electronic version is because of the other concerns I have had and I know that if I did find an electronic version I would have to give up other access needs that I have run into where it would have been a benefit for having a service dog? Thank You for your time.

*I would definitely go with a program dog that can be trained to specifically do exactly what you need. A program that specializes in low mobility and vision. *this can be the same as mobility assistance as your change in vision impaires your ability to move about freely. I am not sure about websites tho unfortunately. *access issues are inevitable unfortunately, it is just a matter of knowing how to stand up for your and your service dogs rights. If it’s difficult for you to do, I would get law cards that state the Ada laws on one side and what your service dog does specifically for you on the other side so it is clear cut! * all other stuff to do with low vision, unfortunately I can not confidently advise you as my service dog and my disability’s don’t call for that. I would definitely call a program that specializes in this kind of stuff to answer specific questions. Or contact a handler that is low vision and mobility! Thank you for commenting and I hope I helped a little!
