Thanks for sharing your story! 🙂Women in my family begin to go grey rather early - I was getting quite a bit of grey by my 30s, but have always enjoyed dyeing my hair different shades of brown, blonde and red. With COVID plus knowing I would be retiring (did so last May), I stopped dyeing to see what the grey would look like. Surprise, I love it! Salt and pepper with a mix of white, light grey, dark grey and my natural brown, with light streaks around my face- cool! So, I went to my colorist one final time to transition the colored hair to grey and blend it with the natural. I'm so happy, and feel like this hair fits me and my life. No one should judge anyone else for how they do this, women should support other women. For me, my colorist helped me feel great about myself, and for some people going this route can be fantastic. 😁❤👍

I stopped dying my dark brown hair (between a N4-N5) - July 2020. I've also been using a HairMax laser comb and I have new growth from it all about 5" long and all bright white or sparking silver! I am evenly peppered throughout my natural dark brown with grays, whites and silvers. My guy is encouraging me which is nice. I'm thinking about highlights/blending into my length (bra strap length). what group would you recommend?

When i started going premature grey at 13 my mother freaked out, so i dyed. In my 30's i had to shave all my hair (i was losing it anyway due to chemo). I let it grow back natural and i will never go back. I gained so much confidence by learning to accept zero hair and makeup, and now i feel free. My self worth no longer is affected by my looks.

Watching another vlog I found pulpriot purple toning shampoo. I only leave for 1 minute after shampooing scalp and before conditioning. It toned and brighten my grey but it also pulled the red out from my ashy brunette from work in the yard. I like the full blend and soft results. I cut my hair very short years before growing down my back with no colouring.

I have long hair to my waist as well. I am thinking about dying the top of my hair to almost a platinum blonde to blend in my grey hair (it is very white - about 90-100% gray) and keeping the lower half of my head un-dyed (most of which is not grey at all) and letting that grow out naturally. I don't know what I am going to do but it took me years to finally have very long hair and now I am 54 yoa (soon to be 55) and if only I could have gone natural from the start. ☹️ I definitely don't want to cut my hair off.

I started the transition 14 months ago. Everyone was unhappy including my stylist. I used the dye-strip technique, putting in grey baby lights, using purple shampoo, fretting about the skunk line, worrying about yellowing of the white part of my hair. Now after battling all of this and yes a year of blending in growth with old dyed hair through using grey haircolor throughout my length. I am a happy grey hair chic person. I get complements everyday from strangers, at least 4 women telling me at the Salon, how amazing I look! Everyone must make the journey on their own. I look forward to another 15 months by which time my natural grey hair would reach my chin! The trick for over 50s is to keep dying your brows. Don't let them turn grey, that actually ages the face. Wear makeup, eyes, cheeks, strong color lipstick. Bright and we'll tailored cloths. People will not see your grey hair as in old, but a really chic and dynamic woman!

Interesting. But just because those people saw value in “the experience” of growing out their grey doesn’t mean everyone would, To each her own but PERSONALLY speaking, I would be mortified to have 3+ inch roots. If I had to go grey I would rather rip the bandaid all at once(have it dyed grey) or most likely, apply root touch up until my hair was a third grey or so, then chop off the brown or dye it. Heck I use touch up spray now because I don’t like to dye my hair as regularly as it needs to look well maintained. My MIL before I even got married , told me dye was a waste of $ and by 40, I’d realize what a fool I was and embrace grey. I replied I will be colouring at 70+. We will see. I’m not totally averse as I once was, but nowhere near wanting to go grey (at 44 and no wrinkles)

I just went straight into it, with the separation line and two-colored hair for two years, now it's 100% gray and it's grown passed my shoulders. Dye strip, never heard of it but it sounds like too much for me, if you can just let it grow naturally. And yes, grays definitely need more maintenance since you no longer have all the conditioning that comes with the dye. I use temporary colors like purple to color my ends or some hair stripes and I don't see anything wrong about playing with your natural hair or even transition by silver dying it, it's very personal and you should chose the one that fits you most.

I love your confidence and decision to go grey! I was a brunette and started to get grey at 35 and I didn't notice it, but my 5 year old daughter did. She was tearing up and asked me why my hair was like that. I think I had like 2 grey strands. So to stop her from crying I told her I would get it the same color. I box dyed it just like my mom had done for years, and my daughter felt better. I will be 60 in a few weeks and have always dyed it. I never wanted to get highlights or do the other fun looks mainly because of the time and expense. But because I was working from home during Covid, I decided to see what it would be like without coloring it for 2 months. Well it wasn't grey - it was white. And while I am Latina and I'm sure it would look nice on me, I just don't want to age my look. So I decided to box dye it Amethyst and I love it and get comments on it when the light is shining on it during a Zoom call. And it is interesting to see how much hair would have been grey since May 2020 - 4 1/2 inches. I am still young at heart and love this different color. Maybe at some point I will change it to a different color - time will tell.

I'm high risk for Covid so I used this stay-at-home time to transition to gray. I let it grow for several months and then literally cut it with my husband's hair clippers to a #8. After clipping it twice, TADA, I'm all natural color and gray. The hair cut looks atrocious, but I'm stuck at home due to Covid, so who cares. (And all I have to do right now is towel dry my hair and fluff it for 3 seconds with my hands.) By the time I'm vaccinated and the Covid cases are significantly down, my hair will have grown out enough to allow my stylist to shape it for me.

I found I have gray streaks and it looks beautiful. Scheduling my next cut to remove my last bit of processed hair. Go for it ladies! Oh and the one thing i wish I had known was I had to change my makeup and wardrobe pallet. Some of my favorite colors no longer work for me. I had to purge lots of clothing, but that just meant more shopping!

I cut most of my hair off when I was around 22 years old and let my grey grow in. I guess that means I've had grey hair for 10 years now. Something I wish I had known before doing it is how many compliments I'd get on my hair. It is a mix of silver and the yellow/blonde you mentioned, so it can look like highlights, and a lot of women ask me where I get my hair colored. I've been going grey since I was 16 and was made fun of for it in high school, so I think knowing it looks gorgeous and is much less of a hassle would have helped me have more confidence about it. Great video. Good luck on your journey!

I'm 57 and I decided today, in 5 minutes after talking to the stylist to just do it. No regrets. No emotional tug of anything. Here's why :) For the past 5 years my hair has been at waist length. I had used a nicer to environment brand to color greys and stay as close to my natural ash black hair color. I have zero wrinkles and seriously didn't want to "embrace the grey". Why should I? I don't wanna. Yes, I sound like a child and I didn't care. For the past 2 years I slowly toned the color down but didn't apply it to my roots. Then, 3 days ago I decided im gonna go for it and do biolage process!! However, much to my surprise, within 5 minutes of hearing EXACTLY what the process would be, the torture to my hair And the expense I said "OH HELL NO"! LMAO 🤣 the stylist thought I was going to walk out and make a scene because I was not told it would be a 3 to 4 step process at an average of $100 an hour!! For an approximate total of $1,000. AVERAGE 😆 so, I said "Let's just layer it, shampoo and style, cut off ALL the color section". She was reluctant because my hair would go from past my waist to barely shoulder length. Do it! It's just hair. It'll grow back. I've had it past my butt and I've had pixie cuts. I've had perms and I've been a redhead. I'm tired. I'm done. As for the yellow coloring that comes with it, when it comes. It's ok. Hydrate. Eat well. Love myself and the body im in. Especially my 👑 glorious hair at its natural state. I don't have as much grey as I hoped I had and surprisingly, I'm wishing I had done it sooner.

I’m 57 too and decided to let my waist length dyed blonde hair go grey 3 1/2 years after becoming a grandmother I decided it was the right time for me. Several cuts later (at home with the help of my husband, a CreaClip and an electric hair trimmer 😱 I have a few inches of dyed blonde left at the front but I am almost all grey with half way down my back one length grey salt and pepper hair. The only regret is not doing it sooner too. Our natural hair feels so silky compared to the dyed hair, it shocked me when my grey was long enough to notice. I intend to have waist length grey hair eventually, my inspiration was seeing a woman walking out towards her car where I’d stopped at a roadside cafe, her hair was long, wavy and silver and grey, she looked amazing, I wanted my hair like hers and now I’m almost there 💜 Good luck to everyone making the transition too, I recommend new hobbies whilst up you wait (you do need patience for long hair) and treats on the money you save from not having your hair dyed 😊

Hi, there. Is it Cat/Kat (short for Catherine/Katherine?)? In any event, I watched your video and very much enjoyed it. I am 68 and began going grey in my late 20's. Since I was born in 1953, to me grey hair equaled "old lady," and I used hair dye for years. Despite all that I'd read about hair dye, I continued dying it. Due to a Clinical Depression, I stopped dying my hair and ate "a bit too much" shall we say? This was in my late 40's. By the time I got to the 50 year mark, I had fully grown out all the hair dye. I felt a sense of freedom that was wonderful. No longer did I need to frantically rush to the drugstore for another two boxes of hair dye (I have a lot of hair, and it is shoulder length) in order to cover up the "old lady" hair color. I was still brainwashed into believing that men "greying at the temples," made them elegant, and women "old ladies." My Clinical Depression was not a chemical imbalance in my brain, but rather the brainwashing I'd been subjected to growing up in the 50's and 60's. So I find your mindset and attitude, so healthy and wonderful when you state in your video that you've stopped fighting the aging process of your body. My motto in life is "I am 30, but the body is 68." Old age truly is a mindset and one that I choose to steer clear of. My approach to life now is holistic. I eat organic, use organic based supplements, drink lots of filtered water, and one of the ways I deal with the sheltering-in-place situation is, I go to KZbin and listen to, as well as dance to, the fabulous Rock & Roll music I grew up with. I hope and pray I can boogie to age 100!!! You seem to be on a healthy track. Good for you Cat/Kat!

I suspected that the hair part with the regrowth was the key, but I thought I would need a hairdresser to turn my hair bangs silver and get silver foils in streaks, along the part. I agree with the feeling that the “never dying again” approach is a little bit of a turn off too. I just left one group because of the attitude that there is something wrong with me if I want to adjust my look with color as I grow out the gray. I am transitioning and using some temporary color and color depositing conditioner to ease the transition over to what is silver to white. I am a natural medium blonde who started coloring to cover the white coming in a few years ago. I have always highlighted my hair before that. I may still do some blending with silver highlights as I go along. I reserve the right to adjust as my hair changes color! 😀

I transitioned in my early 40s by streaking the top layer dark brown (my natural colour) and moving a few strands back from the hair framing my face each time - I got a lot of compliments because people thought I'd streaked the grey/silver IN. This was about 15 years ago and there weren't many products on the market to maintain grey but thankfully there are nowadays. My hair is now quite long and still has some natural dark brown and has never been healthier - I'd recommend finding a good hairdresser for a regular trim and product consultation.

I'm going grow my gray roots out, which I've had since I was 25 and I'm now 40 years younger. I've spent thousands of dollars keeping my hair which was thick and long, with great highlights and covered those roots every 3-4 weeks. I have never thought of growing out my roots, but now that it's "in vogue" and I've seen some great hairstyles and colors, I'm going to give it a whirl. I'm letting my roots grow out, however my hair is dark and I'm using Loreal temporary root spray while the roots grow out. I also wear a hat. I like hats and they're very "in" and I'm tall and it all works together for me. When the color wears off, I just spray a little more on. Also I'm keeping my hair cut in a shoulder bob.

Don't forget to talk to your stylist about a demi-permanent color. I know they can sometimes work differently on grey hair, so talk to someone who really knows how dye works on grey hair, but my mother was considering dying her hair for my brothers wedding and she has never dyed her hair before. She was in her late 60s and didn't have streaks, but just had natural greys all over. We got her a demi-perminent wash out color that just turned the greys to a similar color as her natural hair and gave it all an overall shine and she looked beautiful and felt attractive and as the roots grew in and it washed out, it was a very gentle tranformation back to her usual self. She is in her 70s now and said she never thought about continuing to do it, and she wasn't even sure if it mattered all that much after, but before the wedding she had felt this feeling she'd never had before about looking "older" in pictures and seeing extended family who hadn't seen her in a long time. It was just a little confidence boost (like wearing spanx or a push up bra under a slinky dress to give yourself a little vavavavoom. I am in my 40s now and just starting to get the odd grey here or there and I am not interested in dying them NOW, but I also won't rule it out later. I have often played with my haircolor though, in highschool I had a different haircolor in every yearbook picture, I often did my own new thing with bleaching in highlights or bang sections or underneath sections and doing crazy colors, and even now, I love doing pink or blue highlights, so I would fully consider just using a washout fashion dye and slapping it over my grey as a fun pop of color (if it would take properly it would be nice to skip the step of bleaching).

Enjoyed this video. People should do what they want to do with their hair-- it's THEIR hair for pity's sake! Lots of people are militant about going grey and it seems like a reverse kind of pressure. I'm from a generation when dyeing hair was the usual thing, but I wanted to "go natural." I attempted to go grey last year (cut off the colored part and got a pixie)... but every time I passed the mirror and saw how haggard and old I looked (I've always looked young for my age) with my pattern and shade of grey, I was shocked and couldn't recognize myself that I decided to do hair manicure instead. Hair is very healthy and shiny and I look way better and feel confident about myself. Won't go grey until it suits me.

I’ve applied dye twice. Once in my late teens, and once at 48 because my mom suggested i “color my grey” before a family function. Now, I’m not that into fashion, or makeup, and mirrors are for making sure my bun is centered. So I say, “what grey?” I go outside, and my then partner delicately said, well, you have a sprinkling. But, I also have a stripe at one temple. Maybe the other one will get it together, but not yet (now 52). So, I stripped two stripes, mirroring the existing one, and dyes them purple. Mom had a fit. My niece thought I did it because purple is her favorite color. Win win. I did a touch up at the roots once because I liked it. When I ran out of the packet, I was done. My red hair was knee length. It’s now classic, or bum meets thigh crease length. The purple is gone. The bleached bit is simply lighter. And my original stripe is filling in. Oh so Bonnie Raitt. Long story short, put the streaks in. Don’t wait.

This is so weird to me lol in a good way. It's interesting to see the flip side of my particular life. I have had Grey streaks since I was 16. I looked like Rogue from X-men. And now I am 42 with the coolest Grey pattern. It's always interesting to me that natural things are such an issue. We should be able to do whatever we want to do to feel good in our skin. Makeup, hair dye, no make, up no hair dye. It does not mean that we have issues if we like or dont like these things. It's always someone else pushing their own agenda and projection of their insecurities. Being divisive about beauty creates so many issues. We should simply lift each other up, ESPECIALLY if we don't agree. That's actual love. 💚Thank you for supporting others to be their best version of themselves.

I decided to go cold turkey in July 2023. I had it cut shortish, then as I had a decent amount of root by Christmas, I had a pixie cut, and started growing it out from there. 9 months after the last time I dyed it, I had the last bit of colour cut off the ends, and now I have a chin length layered bob. It has come through really light, and a much nicer texture than I was expecting, and I have started putting some vibrants on it. I currently have a rainbow streak in my sweep and some coloured underlights, all done with semi permanent colours that wash out pretty quick, so I'm just having lots of fun with it now.

I wish I'd known how freeing it would be! Trashing everyone else's opinion of how a woman should look and just looking like me is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I've never over backwards trying to please/impress other people, but it's my life and my body and I'm not ashamed of my grey anymore. 🎉🎉🎉

You have to know that any social media group has nasty people in it. Skip their crap! And….thank you for posting this. In less than a year I will turn 65 and plan on going full-on grey. At least that’s the plan🫤. I’m going to take your advice and follow a support group. Then I will hopefully be prepared.

Hi, you might already found something for your hair but just for you to know. The yellow tint is not only caused by product buildup or pollution. It's also an oxidation process. Antioxidants like niacinamide can help a lot with oxidation. So look for products including niacinamide, e.g. Gyada strengthening shampoo.

Im 28 and I’ve been dying my hair after going grey at about 16.. I’m so done with worrying about my roots or real colour showing so I’m pretty sure I’m going to grow it out! My sister has done hers over the last couple of years and it looks amazing. Just hope I have the confidence to pull it off too! 👩🏼🦳 thanks for the good tips 🙏🏻

@shizam14002 жыл бұрын
My hair is now all grey and looks great. Much better condition than when I was dyeing it. Luckily it’s thick and looks good post wash. A hairdresser persuaded me to go for it. Was colouring it myself and it looked so fake. Suits my skin tone better, too. Give it a try. It’s hard in the growing out phase. But worth it. Can always go back to the tint if you hate it.

I am in my 50's. I only dye random streaks of high colour - i.e. Blue, purple, turquoise. Most of my hair is still my natural colour - which is currently mostly dark with a few silver streaks. My mother is in her 80's and is about 50% grey. I feel very lucky.

I love the dye strip idea! I think I may try that.

I’m 41 with natural dark brown hair. I’ve been dealing with the little greys here and there over the last few years but now I’m just starting to get a good line of grey appearing in between hair coloring. I don’t want to be a slave to dying my hair every few weeks. Box eyes have been so rough on my hair too. I’m not a high maintenance person and only get my hair trimmed maybe twice a year, so I’m not a frequent flyer to the salon. So I feel like on the cusp of making a decision right now. Keep wrecking my hair with dyes or let it grow out with only a little bit of a grey line.
@PeaceIsJesusChrist2 жыл бұрын
@Alyssa, Same!! I’m mid 40s, and that gray line is about 50% now, so I have to color every two weeks. But, I just color the crown of my hair. The rest I color every 4-6 months. So, that makes it super fast and simple. I also use a temporary henna, which comes premixed and is more gentle on my hair than the regular dyes. I wash my hair the night before with a clarifying shampoo, then color the next day. My mom went blonde at 50 due to all her gray (and colors every 2-4 months). I may do the same, but I’m definitely not ready to go blonde yet!

Well done on speaking about this. I personally have not died my hair since I was 16 (now 45). Started going grey at 35. The change in colour has never bothered me. I was more concerned about my hair falling out due to alopecia/pattern baldness. Once I could do something about that, I figured dye would cause more damage, and I would rather have hair than cover up the grey bits. That’s just me. Most of my friends dye their hair, as does my mum. Good on them, it’s a personal choice, and everyone has the right to decide for themselves. Do what you want, it’s your hair, and don’t let anyone tell you different.
@yorktyke2 жыл бұрын
Was scrolling down to see if anyone else went dye free from 30s. Similar timeline to yours. Started greying systematically at 35 or so. Now 40 and quite a bit of silver on top and in the front. I think with brown people the grey doesn't yellow till a lot later.... seems to be the pattern with my mother and grandmother anyway.... So yeah I have long nearly waist length hair most of the length being black but greying fast where it's most visible. I'm focusing on keeping it soft and straight rather than hiding the colour. Do you have kinky flyaway hair? Do you use any products to keep it quiet?
@Ace-Lee2 жыл бұрын
@@yorktyke I use an Aloe Vera gel after washing to tame the flyaways (then put it in a ponytail for an hour or so). It dries kinda like rock, then comb it out and the top is usually pretty smooth. As I don’t blow dry or use products it helps tame the frizz quite a bit. I also use an aloe spray on the days I don’t wash. Seems to be working so far. The rest of the time it’s in a braid or a clip for work, so it tends to go all wavy even when left to it’s own devices.

My mom is one of the few people I ever knew who never colored her hair. She went from brunette to snow white hair, over the decades. I'm blonde and I want to go gray gracefully, so I'll check out your journey even though at this time you're 2 years in and I think it's slightly different for blondes than people with brown hair. I look forward to learning about your journey. Subscribed.

I have never colored my hair either. I was blonde until my late 30's when it started getting darker. Now at almost 60 no one would know it ever was blonde but I have very little grey yet just a dull brown. I wish the grey would just come!!!

I’m 54 and have been dying since 32, the year my first was born. It’s true that kids age you, haha! I’ve been thinking about growing out for a couple years but wasn’t ready to go ahead yet.When the pandemic hit, that was a catalyst for me and I started growing it out. I’m about 9 months in now and just do not care what anyone thinks. After about six months I got a pretty aggressive cut to get rid of the darkest brown, so I’m only two-toned. I have a dark streak at the front, which explains why I never had roots at my hairline, and a lot of silver on top and very dark gray underneath. I hope to be done by next summer, then grow it longer again like I usually wear my hair. My stylist says I’m one of three of her customers growing theirs out. My mother went full out salt and pepper at 32 and never dyed it again. Ignore the haters and you do you!
