I can think of an example of defensive powercreep being instantly felt The Eviolite in LC. The difference between power in Gen 4 and Gen 5 LC is huge, since Eviolite makes it so that many pokemon that worked in Gen 4 were getting walled HARD in Gen 5

Eviolite made Choice mons in LC nearly unviable. You could run some strong band mons in Gen 4 (Rhyhorn for example.) in Gen 5. Eviolite with stuff like Solosis and especially Mienshao made it super easy to survive Choice attacks, even Band/Specs.

Honestly, AV is by far one of the most cleverly designed and well balanced item of all I think, the bonus is excellent and very valuable for a lot of mon, but the downsides is steep enough that many mons either don't bother running it as it's too crippling to be worth it (Blissey) or it is just a set amongst others for them but not essential (Conkeldurr) , but for the mon that truly can make good use of it then it becomes a sight to behold (Tangrowth) Honestly, it's one of the few items I think could realistically be added to previous gens and be just fine in them, like gen 4 or 3 wouldn't be completely up in flames if we added it but it also would shake things up a little and add some really cool sets, strats and niches for some mons (like AV Metagross anchoring Gen 3 offenses against Special Attackers instead of Snorlax for example) I could go on but I think it's a really good thought experiment

Rather than the term defensive power creep, I use "utility/compression creep" to describe more Pokemon being expected to deliver more support to teams than before. Pivoting moves and abilities, hazards, removal, and status spreading moves have proliferated on more and more Pokemon at the top, on offensive and defensive Pokemon alike. Clefable would be the face of it, but Landorus-Therian, Gliscor, Exadrill, Gholdengo, Toxapex, and Heatran make good examples too.

What I love about assault vest is that it makes pokemon stronger defensively, but denies the option of being passive, or having a strong snowball factor, which are the main ways that kind of buff could become problematic, its a very elegant way to balance such a strong item.

I don’t think terastallization is in any way redeemable from a competitive standpoint. When the vote was held a few months ago people voted to keep it probably just because they thought it was fun. Now more people see how awful it is for competitiveness and are waking up to how it should have been banned a long time ago

I called it at the time I said that the vote was going to fail because people are going to use the usual bad faith arguments for something not being broken and because they have fun, a ton of mons are going to get banned solely because of Tera, people will start realizing the pattern and that the lopsided mind games with massive information disparity are going to get annoying and more and more people are going to wake up to how broken it actually is. I expected resistance from the non competitive crowd and that there would be a drop in interest for many until something started being done, though frankly, I did not anticipate the proponents of Tera to still be this numerous by now, they are really holding on better than I had hoped

@@yeet8036 I think Tera is just obnoxious because it also grants this holy 1.5X power boost with something that can crit in 1 hit that is just stupid people r just like lol I don’t know how to build stats I want one stupid Pokémon I like with trash typing to strive think of all the creativity & like at the bare minimum dynamax gave players stat boosts & were a mix of mega & Z moves Z moves and megas where the best they added so much strategy and depth this new mechanic is garbage it’s funny to switch something that’s normal to ghost and go whoop u missed me or whatever but fr that is like giving everything zororaks illusion ability but to everyone there where some of the best changes to items & the meta existing mons move sets & now hisuan mons tight but like the mechanic alone looks dull and the unecesary power boost on stab moves is just dumb and unpredictable there is no real way to play around if u banned that the meta would be so much more like the original game we need it’s so stupid they keep swapping up this new mechanic every game the core game works adding megas only did good if they could have kept spreading it out to lower usage mons the fans would be hyped yet they keep trying to change it up every game and non of them work how do u even use bannette without its mega evo there’s just no reason I have a set but there is just not the same flare to my ampharos and whatever they do next sucks I think it would show the fans don’t want these stupid gimmicks but the original game next gen

Assault vest is one of the top 5 items easily makes unviable final evo mons with lackluster stats we can’t slap evolite on viable and makes starters super OP my fave is serperior investing in high defense & HP instead then usin mons to boost their stats with stat lowering moves n contrary just restore health with giga drain, & typhlosion so u can make it a mixed special & physical attacker but pretty much any starter just becomes a Tanky beast if you slap it on it

Hey this is a video idea you might enjoy making and discussing: what factors make or break, enable or shut down, a Pokemon with a quad weakness? For example, I think of Scizor in DPP OU having a perfect U-Turn switch into Heatran for fire attacks, and how Landorus and Garchomp terrorized their metas even with their quad ice weaknesses, which every special attacker has access to in Ice Beam or HP Ice. How quad weaknesses shape team building and move decisions in metas and how they force some Pokemon out, like a quad rock weakness hurts Charizard and Volcarona and Moltres too much due to stealth rocks I love your videos and your style of analysis. I grew up playing DPP OU on Shoddy before switching to BW on Pokemon Online and the way you talk about those days is a nostalgia blast haha. This is a topic I've thought a lot about and would love to hear your perspective

In rain you'd have two ferros staring each other down and wasting each others PP until someone bitched out. It was on another level compared to the things before it. And corviknight being better than skarmory literally *is* defensive power creep. Its a defensive part of the metagame that outclassed previous defensive pokemon by being better overall due to its better stats and tools
