“Byzantium” wasn’t a successor, it WAS Rome - more specifically, the surviving Eastern provinces. It was the exact same entity legally, just with different language and culture. Successors would be countries like Russia, Austria, and the Ottomans.

Important to note, many dynasty’s in this timeline will be less German due to the fact their are less potential suitors that can’t enforce one kingdoms claim over another, which 100% guaranteed means no Georgian / Victorian / Windsor Britain and potentially means no Hapsburg Spain or Burgundy which has drastic implications on history going forward.

3:59 the sassanids co existing with charlemagne? You do realise charlemagne ascended the throne over a hundred years after the muslims conquered the sassanids right? For that matter, if charlemagne exists why do the byzantines have north africa and southern spain when that should be muslim by the time of charlemagne?

The lingua franca for the Avars was already Slavic by the time of Charlemagne. This would allow for a Bulgarian style empire centred on Alt-Hungary as a mirror to the Frankish one. A reduced Lombardy would mean different splits to the Frankish Empire which could mean an actual Burgundian Kingdom lasting.

Would the Islamic conquests not be much les effective due to the existence of the Italian manpower than the Byzantines would still have allowing them to put up more of a defense, Id assume that they'd be able to possibly regain Egypt but lose the Levant for some time, with North Africa to remain Christian, Iran would still fall to the Arabs though. With this the Byzantines would remain many times over stronger, allowing them to retain control over more of their lands, also with this, other Invasions like the Seljuks may also be less effective due to a stronger Byzantine, with possibly the Turks to only be able to settle in what is now Kurdistan at most.

Tbh I really think there’s only a few things I regret happened in the world of Christendom, the fall of the eastern Roman Empire is the worst; the conquering of Anatolia as well as the Balkans, the consequences of which being seen in the area today, the schism is up there yes but I think it’s future looks damp since Christianity has been boosted by the internet, and in some ways the bolstering of unity between Christendom, ofc regional as well as cultural differences are there (as they exist now and will always be) but this victory and what it means will echo in the hearts of many, past and future, a redemption of sorts. Sorry for rambling about this, the thoughts flowed and I just let them through. Cheers man, good video 😉🔥

I feel like if they held on this long pretty decent in 1300 should be able to survive and possibly revive as not dealing with the Ottomans. We know that the Romans were slow to use guns, but they would at some point adapt. They had lost so much of their former lands. I can see where a General happens to see the use of gun powder seeing he would need to arms as many soldiers as possible with them. He starts a rather short civil war as he wants to use guns. However, if not long after could come issues on food as they had lost so many of their lands which brought food in. So the people rebel and push to end the line of emperors. The Roman Republic is restored in Nova Roma. They decide they are tired of being humiliated. They want Italy back under their control. They march back even with early fire arms take Italy and Sicily. Which the Roman Republic returning to Italy. Which would start a whole new issue as the language being debated on. It is hard to say if the Romans would be so kind to the Norman population.

A few gripes with the role of the Pope in this timeline. With the Pope under Byzantine jurisdiction for a longer period of time the Pope most likely, while not immediately conceding, would be eventually diminished if not completely removed returning to it’s role as it had in the first millennium, that is the Patriarch/Bishop of Rome, under the authority of the Eastern Orthodox Church with it at best existing with a proto-western rite. However I’d agree that the eventual return of the Pope to the role of a Patriarch would not be well-received among the other western nations such as France and Spain and most likely a split far earlier than the one in your timeline

It’s not really that people claim that Byzantium is such a strong successor to Rome that they may as well be the same entity. It’s the fact that the government of Byzantium is completely continuous with that of Rome before the empire was split - the emperorship is the same; by definition they aren’t successors because they are Rome, and they called themselves as such. The separation of “Byzantium” as a separate entity of pre-split Roman Empire is a targeted effort by German historian to discredit the eastern Roman Empire and legitimize the HRE. While general scholarly consensus has shifted and most now consider the eastern Roman Empire to be the Roman Empire in fact, the term “Byzantine” is still used as convenient annotation to separate the periods of roman history of pre and post split, roughly dividing the history of Rome in two.
@brn_4456Ай бұрын
While I agree with your observations and i also believe that „Byzantium“ is the Roman Empire. I have to add the fact that splitting up Romes timeline this way makes so much sense. We have the Kingdom, we know very little of it. We have the Republic, were Rome Rose to power (my favourite part) and we have the Empire. And the unofficial fourth part is Byzantium and I believe it makes absolute sense to split it that way. Before the fall of the West the legitimacy of „being Rome“ was unquestionable because there were no other states besides the Sassanids who had their own History and empires they looked up to. After the west collapsed it became very messy, it wasn’t clear what these new states were, if they were part of the Roman world or something different, if they paid lip service to the eastern emperor or not. And the Question of what it means to be Rome arose in that time, being combined of course by the fact that the City itself became independent and was ruled by the pope, religion had become instrumental. And while the Byzantines always called themselves Roman, it’s also fair to mention that the West addressed them as „Imperium Graecorium“ or something similar, but almost never as „Imperium Romanum“ because that title became synonymous with the idea of a Pan European, Christian state. While you would be still correct with mentioning the continuity, I believe we should be open to the other arguments, because if during the existence of Byzantium it was being called something else, there had to be a change of mind somewhere.

no ottomans doesn't mean no empire forming from there. Balkans are still fragile while mongol invasion and byzantine decline still can easly lead aother bayliks border byzantines to easly expand and reach balkans eventually form similar empire or at least sizable but more stable kingdom and focus on turkify region much stronger if they can't expand and doN't have reason to actually let minorities have much more authonomy. Also alreayd established rennaısance and richer istanbul if they capture the city that means they can actually reform and maybe cretae hibrit greek turkish culture idk it's up to rate of their oppression to christians.
