Yeah, there's a bunch of misconceptions about Columbus. Another is that he didn't think the world was smaller than it was, in fact people knew the approximate size of the Earth since Ancient times. He just thought Asia was far bigger than it actually was.

The AI tends to only colonize downstream on a trade route, and this map seems to have made the Caribbean an endnode, so that's why there's no colonization there. Reverse the Sevilla-to-Caribbean, Bordeaux-to-Caribbean and English Channel-to-Caribbean traderoutes and you should see it being colonized by the Europeans as we're used to.
