That 787B was vastly underpowered. Mazda's goal was never to win Le Mans, and it was quite literally on the same performance levels as Group C2 cars. The 787B was just a marketing tool. And when all the top dogs such as Mercedes, Jaguars, and Porsche began to broke down the Mazda still went on. And you can guarantee they told the drivers to drive as cautiously as possible when they realized they could win. The best Le Mans engine is probably the Flat 6 turbos of the 956 and 962 since they could produce a ton of power whilst being reliable. So I doubt a 1000 horsepower probably 10k+ rpm rotary engine would survive very long.

Interesting video from Jimmer. The main reason Formula One cars don’t have Rotary engines is their absurdly heavy fuel consumption. You can add to that their pollution from burnt oil. Racing rotary motorcycles like the Norton used to trail a blue haze behind them, worse even than the average two stroke. Back in the day, the patents surrounding the Wankel engine were pretty all-inclusive and it took a hefty fee to buy membership in the club. This benefitted no one but the Wankel family. I’m amazed Mazda persevered as long as they did. Lot of power for the weight though.

NA rotaries really don't produce that much torque. Turbo rotaries, on the other hand, can build massive amounts of boost very low in the rev range, and as such can produce so much torque that it threatens to damage the eccentric shaft.

That engine with a few more RPM for more power, this would be a epic engine setup.

Jimmer I wanna see you drive a double decker, in reality. Contact your local HGV driving school, or a big bus company like Arriva, a school will do it for about £250, Arriva might just do it for the PR.

Plus... Arriva buses are Minty, their driving school buses are usually white but I'm sure they'd put L plates on a Minty Double decker.

There's a Kenworth diesel truck mod for AC. It would be interesting to see how it turns out in an F1 car. Another cool swap would also be a 900hp 2JZ or RB26 in an F1

So I actually tried this a while ago. I dropped a 26b in a 1991 Jordan F1 car. I upped the power to around 1k I think, and the rev limit to around 12.5K. I ended up having to make my own tires in order to handle the power because the tires would spin in every gear. Edit: I looked it up before I made my engine swap and the 26b is actually heavier. It's actually6 double the weight at 400kg vs 200 for the V12.
@ManWithBeard19903 жыл бұрын
The rotary engine would be more compact but probably quite a bit heavier: As far as I know, all rotary engines produced by Mazda themselves use cast iron side housings. Aluminium ones do exist but they're not made by Mazda.
@ineednochannelyoutube53843 жыл бұрын
There's no reason you couldnt make the housing out of whatever. The problem is the apex seals.
@ManWithBeard19903 жыл бұрын
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 That's true. And yes the apex seals do eventually wear out, and occasionally they break prematurely too. Apparently though, the root cause of that isn't the seals themselves. If you check Rob Dahm's channel, he has a video on how and why rotary engines break, and how to make them last.

F1 should allow multiple engine config as long as there's a displacement, power, and weight limit. they can keep the mandatory turbo hybrid stuff to please those save the environtment people, but just let manufacturer to compete with different kind of engine :D

That 787B engine could make over 1k HP. All they did was increase the Rev limit. It was limited to 9k for the race for durability reasons. It was dynoed at 10.5k rpm during testing

Now that would be the true challenge to see who builds the best rotary in F1
@Stuntman1752 жыл бұрын
Supposedly, Mazda engineers tore the engine apart from the 787B after its win in 1991 and after inspection, they discovered that the engine could be put back together as is and run another 24h without fear of failure. Rotaries hate low revs, lugging and running cold, what they need is to be run like a race engine.

The only reason there have been no rotary engines in F1 is the engine specifications have been too restrictive. I was told it is a bit too difficult to calculate the displacement so it easier to stipulate reciprocating engines. It is a same because if the amount of work that had been poured into reciprocating engines had been out into rotary they would be better.
