What if the French colony of Acadia had survived into the modern day? French Acadia was a unique colony which pre-dated France's American colony of Quebec, and the Acadians were unique from their Quebecois counterparts in several ways, including in their close relationship with the native americans, and their far more independent style of government. So what if French Acadia survived, that'll be explored in this alternate history.

It’s crazy to me the US didn’t put forth laws to maintain some French culture there out of respect for the French who helped them in the war.

It's more like there were just more English Americans. The Founding Fathers and soldiers who actually fought with the French put up all the 'protections' they needed, through freedom of speech, religion, expression, etc. The erasure of French heritage came with the modern Louisiana state government, which forced English language programs in the 1900s, 120 years after the French helped us out

By the time of independence there were very few Acadians left in Acadia. Still, plenty of Acadians remain in the United States today, specifically in Louisiana, where the word "Acadian" was gradually transformed into "Cajun"

Not to mention that if the French Canadian would’ve just sided with America during the war of 1812 the British would’ve dealt with two enemies at the same time. Even if the Quebecers would insist on being a self governing country which they would want to be left alone. In exchange that they can help Turn Canadian provinces into statehood. That’s just my opinion.

I doubt there would be a Quebec independence movement in the mid 1900's, at least. Until Quebec's so called Quiet Revolution of the 1960's, Quebec was dominated by the Catholic chruch, and the Chateau Clique - the educated & wealthy Anglo and French business elite. It was in their interest to keep the population well-behaved & they would have always viewed an independant Acadia as a threat to their power. Having said that, a trade & manufacturing Acadia as you proposesd would have mutual interests with the Quebec elite. Independant minded Quebecois might migrate to Acadia to enjoy the lifestyle; but if in an alternate 1960's Quebec independance agitators and or terrorists were active, both the Quebec and Acadian elites would have a common interest in suppressing such a movement.

@@TheHatersarebadI’d say that’s unlikely. The Byzantines would have, long before the ottomans chronologically, ended up becoming the sick man of Europe simply by virtue of being that much older and once alternative routes of trade would inevitably be found, the sources of income would start drying up too leading to a fragile and easily taken out nation. Although interestingly, there’s a chance Russia takes a rather different path though, being unlikely to take its “third time” concept.

I think no matter what, eventually the Byzantine Empire would have to reinvent itself similar to how the Ottomans did with Atatürk. Like no matter what, their position in Anatolia and being confined to the Mediterranean will see the global focus shift towards ocean-going trade. I think the Greeks would face the exact same dilemma that the Ottomans were in.

@@MonsieurDean At least the Bourbons wouldn't rise to power, as Carlos II wouldn't promise the Throne to future Felipe V. The major effect of this is the nonexistence of the Family Pacts and thus the Franco-Spanish alliance, and the "afracesamiento" (Francophiles) of the Spanish aristocracy and elites that led to much of the horrible decline and eventually allowed Napoleon break the Spanish Empire so easily.

In Acadian folklore or yet, stories from generations before us, it was passed down that a man named Francois Savoie was said to be the illegitimate son of Prince Thomas Francis of Carignan in Italy, who was also the Duke of Savoy at the time. The family was related to the Habsburg dynasty. One way that a confirmation of that legitimacy may have made a difference would have been the greater Habsburg influence on the region by having a son of the family settled in Acadia. Could that legitimacy have allowed for a greater European influence and thus more help from the countries ruled by the Habsburgs? Maybe. As it stands now, it's another interesting story to pass on to the generations of Cajuns that can trace their lineage to Francis Savoie, like me.

The case of Savoy is quite complicated, it was under domination of the duchies of northern Italy, then by marriage returned to France at the beginning of the 16th century, was controlled by the Habsburgs for some time and then repeated by Italy from the north to eventually become a French region.

I speak for many Acadians in Canada who cannot stand to see Québécois treated as some special citizens due to their language. Guess what? We lost all our language & heritage rights when France handed to England all its territory in North America. The English could have easily said " No more French language. Period. By the year 1850 Canada would have been 100% English speaking. But no, they bent over backwards to accommodate all French speakers' language, religion & traditions. What if Acadia had adopted the cult of Makima, Revy, Cutie Honey, Marin Kitagawa, Trixie Tang, Judy Neutron, Marge Simpson, Wendy Corduroy, Lois Griffin, Sailor Moon and Maddie Fenton instead of Abrahamic shit?

@@MonsieurDean Crassus was offered by King Artavasdes of Armenia 40k Armenian Soldiers, supplies for the war, and military access. Crassus could have conquered Parthia much similar to how Trajan did, overrunning the barely defended north mesopotamia prior to Persian forces uniting(Crassus lost to 1 small contingent irl, this was just how Parthia handled their military) Mesopotamia and the greater east would have many who'd support Crassus(especially the Greeks) as they did prior to seeing him lose. This would be his interior alps and his new staging ground for his massive army to finish pushing east.

Ah, the old homeland. I’m a Cajun whose ancestors were resettled in Louisiana. All things considered, I’m glad we aren’t in Canada. Sure, the government made a deliberate and effective to kill our culture (and successfully eradicated Cajun French), but we still exist and aren’t under the Canadian government.

Acadia would never join Quebec. I cringe every time you say Micmac instead of Mi'kmaq, which Prax Ben got right. Prax Ben also correctly said Indigenous instead of Indian. Micmac and Indian fell out of use over 20 years ago around here.
