Hot take: I actually DON'T like that they have Chandler and Monica end up together in the alternate timeline In the episode where Chandler is jealous because Phoebe found Monica's soulmate, I really liked Monica's line on how she doesn't believe they're destined to be with each other. How they're just two people who fell in love and work hard at their relationship Also the writers never intended them to be a couple when the show started so by showing them not together in an alternate timeline I thought that would've also been a nice nod to the show's roots

I ❤ how Courtney Cox plays “fat Monica” so much looser and more energetic than thin Monica. After going on a rigid diet to lose the weight, her personality became more rigid as well, with everything being in its rightful place and clean, etc. Then being with Chandler, you see some of that energy come back.

Fun fact: This 2-part episode was actually written to fill the gap left by Reese Witherspoon leaving the show earlier than expected. The storyline of Rachel's sister was supposed to last longer, but Reese abruptly left due to being uncomfortable working in front of an audience after having just had her daughter and the writers had to quickly write new episodes to replace the original story arc.

I think as a fan it’s just fun to play with their timeline a bit cause I’m sure at some point we all fantasize about what could have been in our lives. And there are just so many callbacks. They played around with a lot of jokes, like Rachel wanting to take a break, or Monica saying she was gonna give Roger her flower. I think looking back, you can start to appreciate these episodes more thinking back at the entire series.

I love these 2 episodes. I love all of the flashbacks too. One thing I love about these alternate universe episodes is that pretty much everyone ends up on the same track that they are now. Rachel really did make the best decision by leaving Barry. Ross didn't waste all those extra years with Carol. Monica and Chandler still ended up together. And Pheobe is made to be exactly who she is. The only one that was better off was Joey, but it also made him a jerk. So it's good in the end that he was humbled by being fired from DOOL. Yep, great episodes!

This was originally a 1-hour episode, and I think it works so much better that way. And I hate that when they split it in 2, they didn't use the alternate opening on the 1st episode. That's where the surprise element is intended. Just using it on the 2nd episode makes no sense. Also, my favorite line in the whole thing only appears in the extended episode on the dvd. Ah, well. I think Courtney Cox is the highlight of the ep. Such a fun, sweet performance, and that's not a side of Monica they show enough.

Yes, agreed on Courtney Cox crushing it as The Notorious B.I.G. Monica. Back during it's original broadcast run, some media was giving her crap about if she thought a skinny Hollywood actor wearing a fat suit was politically incorrect? And like a G, CC shot back how she got tons of fan mail from young women who struggled with weight issues and said to not listen to the haters because they didn't see it as mockery and cheap shots, but giving them humanity and hope and an outlet to laugh at themselves. Courtney says her the flashback fat suit was only suppose to be a one-off, but after these heartfelt letters from strong young ladies, she told the writers her experience and would do the suit anytime again and again if they wrote it. Thank god because she is brilliant as Old School Mon.

I've heard these episodes are due to the producers' need to write it on short notice since previous plans included a six-episode arc involving Rachel's sister Jill. There were rumours of on-set tensions between Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon but both actresses have always denied any animosity. It's more likely that Reese was unavaible due to scheduling conflicts. These are definitely not my favourites but I'm surprised to hear so many people skip them. I enjoy them and love how the characters are still pretty much the same (except for Phoebe which is my only gripe). Plus, even in the alternate universe Chandler and Monica still find their way to each other ❤ Fun facts: This is the first appearance by Cole Sprouse as Ben. He and his twin brother Dylan were on a popular Disney Channel show called The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (and its spin-off The Suite Life on Deck). They were also in the movie Big Daddy with Adam Sandler. Both brothers took a break from acting and went to college. Cole studied archaeology, and even though it's different from paleontology (paleontology is the study of fossils while archaeology is the study of human artifacts and remains), they're heavily connected and often work together. So I imagine Ross would be proud 🤣 As an adult, Cole has starred in the show Riverdale, which coincidentally is based on the same comic that Chandler sells his story to, and the movie Five Feet Apart. The brothers are now both estranged from her. The other doctor and patient while they're shooting Days of our Lives are actual characters from the show played by the real actors. Also, when Rachel and Joey are walking on the set it's the real Friends set (the daytime backdrop for the view from Monica's apartment can be seen). And the old man Joey mentions had actually retired a few days before the episode was shot. These episodes emphasise something the show's fans rarely notice. In Monica's kitchen there is a different table with matching chairs, unlike all of the other episodes where she has a table and four completely different chairs. This was an inside joke by the producers, since the usual table with the mismatched chairs is something that Monica the perfectionist would never have. The couch in Monica's apartment is the same couch that Ross bought and attempted to move into his apartment during the infamous "Pivot!" scene in S5. The hair clip that Monica is wearing when Chandler tells her that he wants to be her boyfriend is the same one that she wears in the S4 finale after they have sex for the first time in London. Joey's apartment is the same apartment he lived in for part of S2. The unusual chair is borrowed from the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation. One of the ways in which Carol and Susan are displayed as alternate personalities is that they have swapped hairstyles; Susan's hair is straight while Carol's hair is curly, both in the same style that the other character wears in reality. This is one of the few times in S6 where Lisa Kudrow is not wearing a wig or hairpiece. Producers thought her real hair was too short for Phoebe's character. Rachel falling off the couch while drunk was Jennifer's idea and David came up with the pronunciation of "karatay" (the actual American pronounciation is "karadee").

This two-parter is actually one of my favorite episodes in all of friends. I love it so much. I always found the joey and Rachel story line so unexpected and exciting and sexy lol. Phoebe was hilarious. So were Ross, Susan and Carol. And of course the Monica and Chandler story line is very sweet.

This two-parter was what we in the community (of fangirls) call an AU (alternative universe). They're definitely not for everyone, but the AU Mondler storyline made it worth it for me! And as an avid fanfiction reader, sometimes AUs are inevitable if you lack content from your favourite fandom and there are some really good ones, like historical AU (what if Chandler and Monica lived in the 1800s?), magic AU (what if they lived in the Harry Potter universe?), childhood besties AU etc.

I always liked how these episodes change the context of Ross’s marriage. In the original timeline, Ross is happily married and thinks everything is perfect and the divorce ruins him. In this timeline, he has time to figure out something is wrong with his marriage and handles it better.

What I find interesting as he's watching this show is that, it feels like he's assuming this show is written like modern shows. Which it's not. For those of us who grew up watching FRIENDS weekly for years. We all loved these "alternate timeline" episodes because we spent years asking these "What if...?" Questions and seeing them played out as so much fun. It didn't matter that they weren't Canon, I mean this isn't the MCU. This was a casual day to day watch. We didn't know what the full through line of the show was gonna be so it didn't matter. It was just fun to be there on MUST SEE TV Thursdays to see the new episode.

I’m just watching the show through my perspective. I can’t really watch it like people did in the 90’s and 2000’s because it’s not that time anymore. I try to contextualise it so some things make more sense but it would be disingenuous for me to say that the “what if” episodes are better imo because that’s just not true for me personally. I enjoyed the episodes but not quite as much as others and that’s out of my control, not because I have any expectations that aren’t being lived up to. Hope this helps my guy!

But it does make me a bit sad that you didn't get the chance to be THERE in the 90s and early 2000s as we were finding these things out for the first time. I'm pretty confident your POV would be 100% different. Also I feel like this is the fault of how TV shows are now like 8 episodes and we expect every single one to have something important happen cuz otherwise we feel it's a bit of a waste. But I'm still enjoying your surprised reactions to many of these episodes. FRIENDS was and still is such a comfort show for me and many others. I hope it ends up becoming that for you too ❤️😉

Yeah 100% and shows will be different in another 20 years. The sitcom was also just a result of like you said, only having access to a couple episodes a week on TV where now everything is online so that medium doesn’t work as well anymore. Tbf though I remember when I was much younger really enjoying having a specific time in the week I had to be in the right channel at the right time to see something I was invested in. It’s almost too indulgent now the easy access.

I won't spoil anything but with FRIENDS back then in the early 2000s it was THE show to watch on Thursday night so you could talk about it at school with your friends on Friday. It was definitely a moment in time that I don't think we get very often in modern day media anymore. Especially cuz everything we want to watch is Price Locked behind a subscription. FREE Network TV was so important to the success of these shows. But now things get canceled left and right cuz not enough people watch. Which makes sense cuz we can't afford every service out there.
