Personally, I find your alternative timelines quite entertaining compared to other channels. You describe the situation as if you were in that timeline and doing a documentary or something, and unlike most channels, after 7 years, your content only improves. I hope your situation has improved and you can live a better life in the future.

What if Germany was Communist, but Russia was Fascist? That will one hell of a timeline.
@TheVoiceOfReason93
@TheVoiceOfReason93 Жыл бұрын
Nice timeline, though I disagree with the assertion that Germany if they went communist would collapse into another authoritarian hellhole. German communism before the fateful Spartacist Uprising revolves primarily around Council Communism, a democratic tendency of Socialism which opposed to state socialism and advocated workers' councils and council democracy as the primary means in which workers organise themselves. Should communists win in Germany they would had at least attempted to implement a democratic socialist programme which would guarantee democratic representation and civil liberties to the working class, and would be helped by the fact they would have at least one ally in Russia (thus not surrounded completely by enemies and would not develop a siege mentality), as well as an established democratic culture with the previous constitutional monarchy, developed working class population and consciousness and a developed industrial infrastructure (All unlike backwards autocratic Russia). These would strongly deter the rise of despotism and encourage growth of genuine council/soviet democracy. And since a Communist Germany would likely lead the communist world as its most developed and strongest member, it is very likely that future communist revolutions and states would have Council Communism as their primary communist ideology instead of the Marxist-Leninist and Maoist tendencies we got in our world, since it had proven to some extent to work by taking over Germany, and having genuine council/soviet democracy could ensure diversification of alternate socialist variants with their willingness to tolerate dissenting or divergent viewpoints, unlike the rigid puristic orthodoxy of our world's Stalinist/Marxist-Leninist tendencies. Now, none of this is guaranteed to happen, and other factors might still lead to German Communism going autocratic anyway, but neither is a slide towards authoritarianism inevitable. A lot ultimately depends on luck and the characters involved at the pivots of history.

I think your version of German communism is very convincing. Germany had a strong national identity, and they certainly won't lose all of it under Communist rule. Going for ethnic German lands such as Austria and Sudetenland is simply a German thing, no matter what government. Also, since German communism is basically a pragmatic "communism light" compared to the USSR, their army might be very competent since they probably wouldn't purge the entire officer corps. People like Rommel, Model, Schörner and Balck, who came from middle-class families, could certainly continue their careers. Also, the Volkswehr might not be as polluted by comissars as the Red Army, another good thing for the fighting efficiency.

You could do an alternate scenario of this same scenario you're doing, where Stalin wins the power struggle in the Soviet Union and Trotsky flees to Germany, where he gains support. Basically there would be three “powers” in this scenario, the capitalists, the Trotskyists and the Stalinists. Trotskyists would likely focus on dominating the West before retaking the "heart of the revolution", leaving Stalin with more time to prepare, but he may also be much more paranoid in this scenario and perhaps even support fascist leaders against the Trotskyist threat.

I cannot still fathom why people think that limits on civil liberties are an inherent feature of revolutionary socialism. When the real German revolution happened in our timeline, the revolutionary workers, soldiers, as well as revolutionary leaders of what would later become the KPD, were actually surprisingly lenient, not only against military officers or party politicians, but even against the high bourgeois big businessmen and their bourgeois press. They were even TOO lenient in fact, as they left the bourgeois newspapers to freely print lies about the revolution and the revolutionaries. There were even stories of red brigades who captured Freikorps officers and treated them so well that these same officers would later, after the revolution's failure, say they actually shook hands with some of the revolutionaries after the battles were over. When the counter revolution succeeded, it showed no such mercy. They did not only shoot combatants in the heat of battle, but carried out massacres on the orders of the social democratic government even after the revolution was thoroughly crushed. On a more grand scheme of things, certain limitations of civil liberties are always necessary in revolutions, and you don't have to ask socialist working class revolutionaries for a confirmation on that, just ask the bourgeois revolutionaries of 150 years earlier, such as in the American or French bourgeois revolutions that they carried out against a then decrepit and reactionary feudalist economic system. When it comes to socialist revolutions, part of what was responsible for the lack of civil liberties experienced in our timeline's USSR was its general backwardness and the great poverty that it faced after the first world war, after a hard civil war, and after over half of its working class base died in the war or was left demoralized and overworked by its material consequences, therefore strangling the young and burgeoning worker's council democracy that naturally arises in all socialist revolutions. This material squalor could not support a burgeoning working class democracy and the high level of productivity it required to run a democratically-planned economy. This led to the rise of a parasitic bureaucracy that eventually saw most of the Communist Party cadres themselves either shot or imprisoned in a political counter-revolution by this bureaucracy that was helped by people like Stalin after Lenin's death. When people cannot get bread so easily, they need to stand in lines, and when they need to stand in lines, you need bureaucrats to hand it out and you need police to keep order. This degenerated worker's state we today know as the USSR would go on to meddle its hands in ever attempted socialist revolution until the end of the century and leave it with its own defects in its image. But if the German revolution succeeded, if the Hungarian, Polish, Finnish and Italian revolutions that also happened in our timeline succeeded, these much more developed and industrialised countries would provide a kind of economic base to have enough abundance where any opposition to this new working class-led system would not pose any danger. At that point, limitations on civil liberties lose all purpose. After all, do you see many people today advocating for a return to feudalism? Do they pose enough of a threat that the capitalist states need to actively suppress them? Of course not. But where you do not see such a thing for pre-capitalist advocates, you do see a lot of it against those who wanna move to something above capitalism, because where the old feudal aristocracy is now non-existent, the modern working class - the proletariat - which is also the only revolutionary class under capitalism, has only continuously swelled in numbers from the beginning of capitalism where they were an exceptionally tiny minority relegated to a few developed late-medieval to early-modern cities, to today where we are most of the world's population.

Personally, I think this is Zvallid's best video ever. Other videos are often unrealistic. (which is fine in What ifs) However this one is different. It kinda gave me the feeling that this could've happened. Onestly I hope the Red alliance will win. And here it comes the second difference. In this scenario if capitalism wins then the ending won't be so interesting. But if communism wins, then the ending would be something unique. Communism will spread all around the world and society and humanity itself will reach the next step: a communist society like the one described by Marx. For its original ending, the realism and the great quality of the video, this could really be the greatest alternative history what if of all time,making us really thinking "How the world would have been if only the german revolution had success." I still hope the Red Pact will win. Great video and story, keep it up like this. I hope one day your channel will be recognised. The defeat of the Central Powers and the end of the German monarchy was one of the worst things that could happen, the world would certainly have gone a better way if they had won WW1. Yes, WW2 would have happened the same way, but other tragedies directly caused by the defeat of the Central Powers such as the existence of the Soviet Union and the emergence of Fascism and Nazism would have been avoided.

This timeline is interesting not only on 1920s and WWII, but also post-war development. You can think of Japanese occupied French Indochina in this timeline after the end of WWII. I suggest Viet Minh would form and rise under French and Japanese rule, and the conflict will happen maybe 10 years after the end of WWII. I saw your videos about Germany fighting Viet Minh in case of Nazi victory in Europe, and a person suggested that German may not fight a war for French, instead they will give the land to Japanese. In this timeline, Japanese would still become Fascist, and the only one Fascist country in the world based on the history from Meiji Restoration. In this case, several years after end of WWII, it would be Japanese to fight Viet Minh.

In addition, if USA still exist after end of WWII, they would be sympathetic to Japanese no matter how many atrocities Japanese conducted in Vietnam. In our timeline, if you dive into the history of Nanking massacre in our timeline, the Japanese tortured, killed and buried alive many Chinese civilians during occupation of Nanking because the battle of Shanghai took them more than 3 months, where they expected that they would have taken Shanghai in less than 2 weeks and made China surrender in less than 3 months. The atrocities of Nanking massacre were far beyond people's imagine, especially the way the Imperial Japanese army torturing Chinese women, even young children and infants could not escape their violence. Some military officers even held a competition of killing Chinese civilians, and compared how many Chinese civilians an officer killed the most in numbers and in the most brutal way, they would receive most rewards. In this perspective, they were even more violent than Nazi Germany killing the Jews. For Nazi Germany, Waffen SS send many Jews to concentration camps and put them into poison gas chamber to kill them, an instant death. However, during Nanking massacre, the Chinese civilians, especially women, were beat, tortured, r*ped, bleed, suffering large pain, and shot by gun to death or beheaded, men and children suffer similar atrocities, some were buried alive, at least 300,000 were killed by these means I listed. Most Western people do not know because their historians for a long time did not take this part of history as important as European theatre in WWII. Western politicians and media tend to amplify the sins and evils of Nazi Germany and Mussolini, but they don't take the war crimes of Japanese Empire as serious as these European Fascist regimes, and I think it is unfair for both Germans and Japanese right wing in international perspective. In fact, the Imperial Japanese army were at least as violent as Nazi Germany, in some perspective they are even more violent than Nazi Germany. In modern Japan, there are still right-wing politicians denying the historical fact of Nanking massacre as if these events didn't happen. Imagine these kinds of war crimes in this timeline happened in Vietnam, I assume that more people would join Viet Cong, the war would intensify.

Hi Zvallid, is there any possibility of a German-Soviet Split (much similar to the Sino-Soviet Split in our real timeline)? I mean the two countries had their own characteristics that will influence their form of Communism. Germany is much closer to the democratic west while USSR is the heart of the east. Germans had already experience in some form of democracy (I believe all males age 25 can vote and even if the Kaiser is powerful, there's already a legislative body that time, the Reichstag) while Russia was just an autocratic monarchy (Tsarism) with a constitution introduced very lately. Germany became Communist when it was already industrialised while Russia became Communist even it was just a feudal society. Would nationalistic competition and enmity prevail over ideological cooperation (remember these is basically Communist Germanic vs Communist Slavs). What would happen to the Jews? Who would be better armed and much more militaristic? How about propaganda, conscription, civil liberties, and brutalities of their regimes? Would they go to war with each other just like 1969 in the USSR-PRC border? How about their allies? Who would be the pro-German Communist states and who would be the pro-Soviet one (ex. Vietnam was pro-USSR while Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge was pro-China)? My best guess is that the Russians would go on hardcore totalitarian Communism while the Germans will adopt a more moderate and less authoritarian form of socialism. Marxist-Engelist (German) vs Stalinist (but it will violate the fact that Trotsky was the leader after Lenin's death). Anyways love your video.

Hello Zvallid, I have watched the video the second time. I have questions referring to communist Germany after end of civil war, especially the people who participated in politics and military. 1. Hitler, Himmler would run away, some members of Nazi party would be killed or sent to concentration camps. But how about Albert Speer and Ferdinand Porsche? In our timeline, both of them were not the founding members of Nsdap, they were found by Hitler later and had close relationships with Hitler. I wonder in this timeline, would they be sent to concentration camps or instead they join KPD? 2.About the rearm of German army (Volkswehr, Rote Armee in this timeline) As we know about Weimar Republic in our timeline, the General Staff (Großer Generalstab) was dismissed due to Treaty of Versailles, but to maintain self-defense capability, the organization was shrunken and reorganized into Truppenamt (Troop Office). In your video, when KPD started a revolution and turned the revolution into a civil war, the General command (suppose the Troop Office) was against the revolution. I doubt that when entente armies intervened the civil war, there would be a split inside Troop Office, some generals would support communists, while the conservative Prussian ones would not. In our timeline, if you read how did Hitler rearmed Wehrmacht, he appointed Werner von Blomberg as chief of general command, who had conflicts with von Schleischer before Hitler came to power. He played a crucial role in rearming the Wehrmacht. In early Weimar era of our timeline, Hans von Seeckt was also very important. He was one of the generals in Troop Office who suggested Weimar Germany to establish cooperation with Soviet Union because Treaty of Versailles would cut all of them down. Then Weimar Republic signed Treaty of Rapallo with USSR in 1922. I want to ask whether these generals would remain in position when KPD won the civilian war? Or they would be sent to concentration camps or even be executed? Same for Von Leeb, Keitel, Guderian, Von Rundstedt, Kesselring, and Von Reichenau? Clearly, when KPD rose into power, they need someone who had experiences in former German Empire/Weimar military to make red army/Volkswehr capable of fighting a war outside, similar to what Lenin decided for the development of Soviet red army. I know that Rommel and Wilhelm Model would join communists because they were not nobles. 3.About RFB. Would RFB become a paramilitary force similar to SS in Nazi Germany? (Think about Waffen-RFB) 4.Would Metropolis still be filmed under communist Germany timeline?
@zvallid

very interesting to read. I think speer would work for the KPD, he was mainly apolitic. I think Model, Paulus, Hoepner Leeb Schorner who came from the middle class could be in the volkswehr. rommel too RFB should become the same as SS

@@zvallid Thank you for reply. The reason I mention Hans von Seeckt is that in 1919, he was the first commander in-chief of Troop Office, taking the place after Hindenburg resigned. The transition of Großer Generalstab to Truppenamt was led by him, and he said that the transition was a camouflage of General staff to fit in the limitations of Treaty of Versailles. In the video, in 1919/1/5, there were uprisings of Volksmarine division in Berlin, and Weimar government (led by Friedrich Ebert) orders army to put down the uprisings because the police chief Emil Eichhorn refused to do anything. I saw the timeline, and I found in 1919 January Hans von Seeckt was still commander in-chief (according to our timeline). Then in 1919/1/10, Spartacists and USPD started a general strike in Berlin, and after 2 days (in this timeline), they decided to start proletariat revolution. This made von Seeckt's position even more important than in our timeline. In the video, the Troop Office was against the revolution, and this would result in two cases (a ramification): 1. Hans von Seeckt was against the revolution. He was with Weimar Ebert government. In this case, he would be one of Reichswehr and "die Weissen". In case of KPD victory, he would have run away or be captured, maybe be killed like General Von Vatter of Freikorp. 2. Hans von Seeckt was hesitant or against to take Weimar Government's orders to put down the revolution. In this case, in 1919/1/5, he would either not be taking orders from Ebert to crush Volksmarine division or in 1919/1/10-12, he refused to crush the general strike and KPD-USPD revolution. This may result in him being another Emil Eichhorn, "The Emil Eichhorn in Reichswehr" you can say. He may be dismissed from his position as commander in-chief, and replaced by another general like Hindenburg. The conflict between him and Weimar government/Whites in army may prompt him to contact KPD and join the communists, becoming the very first general in Rote Armee. The split of Troop Office may begin right after he joined the communist side. Or he might be put in jail or killed by Freikorp. What does Zvallid think about it?

I have a problem on socialist/communist Italy in this timeline: in the video, you assume that Togliatti/PSI used the same method as Mussolini in our timeline: Marcia su Roma and tried to seize power in 1922; as far as I know about Marx and socialism, most factions of socialism except Fabian Society (the ancestor of British Labor Party) have a tendency of anti-monarchy, communist is of course anti monarchy, and other socialism such as syndicalism or other utopian ones are also critical on monarchy. However, the video suggests that the king would still remain and appoint Togliatti as prime minister as Mussolini in our timeline. The question is that according to the political property of PSI, will this kind of situation happen? Or another perspective is that if PSI is more pro-communist or syndicalist, will the king just run away like Spanish Republicans overthrowing Rivera rather than maintaining his status? If the king still remains, does that mean PSI is more like British Labor Party rather than communist or syndicalist?

@@zvallid Thank you for reply. The question is meaningful because PSI in our timeline was a complex mixture of communist, social democrats, pro syndicalism worker unions, anarchists and middle factions, like prewar SPD in German empire, or Petrograd Soviet in late Russian Empire

Interesting video but two mistakes that need to be pointed out: 28:54 "Marx saw Germans as the master workers of a communist world" That is entirely antithetical to what Marx wrote, as dismissed nationalism in general and specifically mocked German nationalism. Also 24:46 Engels Lenin and Trotsky did not think socialism was less "efficient" than capitalism but that both systems inherently operated on a material basis that had to expand, naturally leading to a world-wide system.

@@zvallid Thanks for reply. So in this timeline, communist Italy would not have a sufficient large navy to fight Britain during the war (1922-1930 was too short), and Britain may occupy Italian colonies during the early stage of the war to make naval blockade against Comintern countries. Germany would build a large fleet of bomber airplanes and U-boats to fight British Royal Navy during the war. I don't know whether communist Italy would build many ships to counter British Royal Navy

One correction: Nazi Germanys economy was actually a mix of free-market capitalism and central planning. Germanys economy was mainly focused on war which is why the Gernan economy was actually extremely large (atleast on paper) during WW2

the nazi error was that german economy was not focused on war until 1943, too late
