What would WW2 have been like if Germany was Communist

Good video. However, I don't think that a communist regime of Germany would be that easy to be overthrown if they can reach proletariat revolution, and I think that Germany would not cede control of western Europe that easily after the end of the war, the countries they occupied during the war (would be independent after the war) may have Volkswehr constantly stationed in their territory, like US army in post WW2 Japan. My guess is that there would be uprisings and turmoil in France, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Norway maybe Germany itself, and the Volkswehr alongside with RFB would intervene the conflicts in those countries and put them down one by one. Liebknecht would be a non-anti-Semitist Hitler, sliencing people with anti-communist tendencies. I think he would have stayed in power, not being replaced by Thälmann, and he would have started an economic reform due to higher internal pressure of KPD and other people (bad economy and problems of Orthodox Marxist model), like new economy policy of Lenin. The new economic model would be a modification of Keynesian capitalist model (try to keep efficiency in capitalist economic models) to fit the need of Marxian economy (You can look for Austrian Schools and Neo-Marxian Economy as reference). Since Germany has advanced technology and was highly industrialized, you can imagine an economical model like China nowadays but without stock market/shareholders, there would be currencies, but the large industrial enterprises still be controlled by KPD led by worker-representative leaders, not shareholders. Theoretically, communist government of Germany has the same structure as Nazi Germany, they can control the needs and trace the production. My opinion is that Liebknecht would be forced to be more pragmatic after the war, in order to keep Marxism in power. For Trotsky, I don't think he would be overthrown, if Stalin attempted to overthrow him, I think the one being killed or sent to Gulag would be Stalin, since Trotsky and his generals had successfully won the war against Americans in far east and Finland, and Soviet Union under his rule would have industrialized rapidly in 1930s, with the cooperation with Germany (and without a devastating war like operation Barbarossa). For UK, I don't think UK would accept to waive the naval blockade against Germany, to know my reason, think about western sanctions against Russia nowadays, and the truce of Germany withdraw troops from communist France and other newly born communist states to exchange for the end of naval blockade, in my opinion, would never happen at all. For China, I think Japanese Empire would have left Shanghai and Fujian because maintaining occupations in those regions facing massive Chinese counterattacks everyday would have worn out Japanese soldiers without any gains, and there would be a coup like February 26 incident led by other factions of Fascists in Japan to express the discontentment over the government, and possibly being put down by the original military junta government, and Japanese Empire would continue to enforce naval blockade over China (and USSR). However, the military junta government would eventually be removed, and a new military junta government would rise into power and being more pro-American, but not as pro American as current Japanese LDP government (would still keep Fascist characteristics). My conclusion is that Liebknecht would eventually become like Hitler in this timeline, but without anti-Semitism and the need to plunder more resources in USSR, there would be no Holocaust and wars in eastern front, and he would have maintained good relationships with Soviet Union several years after the war since UK, USA would continue to blockade them. The German-Soviet split would happen, but not in Liebknecht era, maybe in 1950s or 60s. The cold war would happen, with a much larger communist block (Eurasia), and Germany would have start to build battleships, aircraft carriers and test rockets, develop nuclear weapons secretly. For Togliatti, in case he was overthrown, there would be a military operation like "Fall Achse" carried out by Liebknecht regime to "save" Togliatti, just like how Hitler saved Mussolini, we can call it "Fall Comintern". In contrast, I simply don't think Togliatti would be overthrown, either. This video should have a sequel, separated in two timelines, one being your ending plottwist, another one being my predictions.

As a continuation of my previous analysis, I would keep on reasoning the probable situations in UK, USA and USSR. For UK, in 1929, due to economic crisis caused by Great Depression, the Laborist Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, would be forced to resign (maybe after Munich conference), the trigger would be the accusations of conservative factions in UK of Ramsay MacDonald having connections with communist leaders in Europe (this guess is based on "the Zinoviev letter", you can think of "the Rosa Luxemburg Letter" or "Trotsky's letter" if you want) and political responsibility of bad economy. There would be another election, and the Tory would win, with the prime minister being Stanley Baldwin, in 1930. I think it would be Stanley Baldwin declaring war on Germany and Soviet Union, and the war would happen as mentioned in the first half of your video. After the war, as UK failed in the intervention of Western Front (and Greece) and the trade breaking off between UK and the whole Eurasia (all communist), there would be political turmoil (conflicts between workers and conservatist demonstrations), shortages of everything in UK. In this case, Stanley Baldwin would be forced to resign like Ramsay MacDonald maybe in 1933 or 1934, then there would be another parliament election, with a result of hung parliament. The Labors, maybe led by Atlee, would regain power. However, the Labor minority government would not last long, as mentioned in 23:20 of the video, the ruling class and capitals of UK fear a communist uprising with all workers and lower class people being potentially sympathetic to communism, and they would see the Labor government unreliable to cut themselves off from communism. As a result, there would be a "Motion of No Confidence" against the Labor minority government being successfully addressed by Tory, Whigs, and independent senators, and the Labor Prime Minister would be voted out of office. From my understanding of British politics, when such an act being addressed, the parliament would be disassembled by the King, and there would be another parliamental general election (probably in 1935 or 36), a new coalition cabinet consisted of Tory and Whigs would form, the prime minister (may be a Tory) would be a hardline anti-communist, like Winston Churchill, and the new government would actively participate into the colonial wars in Africa and India. The Anglo-Saxon dominated colonies, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa Nationalists Government would reach independence, maybe in 1937 because the colonial wars may let UK government incapable of controlling these colonies. Irish Free State, in 1918-1921 would have an independence war when UK was intervening the civil wars in Germany and Russia, and in 1922, they reached semi-independence by Anglo-Irish treaty as in our timeline. In this timeline, they would take advantage of turmoil in UK to alter its constitution and became a fully independent republic, namely Republic of Ireland. And for Hong Kong, since UK allied with Japanese Empire during WWII, Chinese communist NRA would assemble a large army to siege Hong Kong, and British would eventually lose despite huge loss of Chinese forces, because communist China can muster even more soldiers than Soviet Union to do human wave charge, with good tactics they would eventually win against British troops confined in small barracks. For USA, the Second wave of KKK (Second Klan) would continue to grow from 1915 and after WWII. From my perspective, Europe would be all communist after WWII, so there would be no anti-Fascist policies in US politics, KKK as a far-right, anti-Semitic, anti-communist, and racist political party would have more than 4 million members in USA and continued to participate in local US state elections, some may even become Governors in Middle and Western American states. After WWII, suppose the president was Hoover as in your video, you mentioned that Hoover used secret agents and paramilitary forces to crush communists, and my opinion is that the Second Klan would also become a tool of US government to do the dirty job. The blacks and the poor would support communists, although being crushed by Hoover regime, new communist factions would grow again, and fought with KKK. We might see them assassinating leaders of each other, and calling each other as "evil bastards". I think the US government would become more authoritarian and racist in general, after Hoover, we might see a coalition government of Democrats and KKK, with racist president in charge. For USSR, a Soviet Union led by Trotsky would be less violent than Stalinist regime, and without devastating wars like operation Barbarossa in eastern Europe, USSR would be richer and more industrialized in 1930s, maybe in 1935 they would have first T-34 in mass production. Their oil and steel production, with mining instruments supported by communist Germany, would rise much faster and rivals the production rate of US in late 1930s, enough to sustain the need of itself and the economic recover of communist Germany. Moreover, USSR in this timeline would occupy Poland (Polish SR) and Finland (Karelia-Finland SSR), so it would have 17 union republics instead of 15, with higher total population. The uprisings of Poland after the war would be crushed by Trotsky regime, and those people joined the uprisings would be sent to Gulag or killed. Spain and Portugal being weak after years of civil war, would be dependent more on Germany and USSR either on suppressing its own uprisings or economically. I think this analytics is significant because if you think of the project "Operation Barbarossa did not happen", the post WWII scenario of this timeline proposed by my previous comment is very close to this scenario despite the Fascist regimes all being communists in Europe. (By the way, if I were Trotsky, after Germany conquered almost all Western Europe, I would not invade Switzerland, instead I would ask Germany, Italy, Hungary and Democratic France to impose a total land blockade of everything over Switzerland to make them comply)

They are I think some mistake in this scenario : If Germany turn communist, I don’t see France surrender is occupation of Rhineland following ww1. But instead France trying to install a capitalist Germany in Rhineland or annex the territory thus making the first line becoming the Rhine. In our reality, Britain advocate for France leaving the Rhineland to create some sort of balance of power between France and Germany in Europe. With a communist Germany this is unlikely. Germany was at this period full of very nationalistic anticommunist and Germany was conservative. If the communist revolution would like to stand, they probably like the Weirmar Republic face a bunch of nationalist revolt here sponsor by the allied and could survive only by doing Stalin like policy thus reducing the efficiency of both the army and the industry. And here they will be a massive exodus of probably million of German toward occupied Rhineland, Austria or Holland. The French army in 1930 (before post 1929 budget cut) was one of the best and biggest of the entire world. And was until the German invasion in our timeline consider the first ground army of the world. Even if the maginot line was not finish the French military they were aware of the gap, and in 1940 when Germany try to attack a non fortified sector (I don’t speak about the Ardenne) they were pull back sometime because the French put more forces in these gap and had for some years prior made careful defence plan. With all of that I think the invasion of France shall be more costly than 200 000 death for Germany with the main French weakness being communist loyalists. After the fall of Paris, even if no clear defends lines appears, it is very likely what nation wide fights between communist and the far right leagues occurs. And even if the communists win thanks to German help win, this shall be very costly with guerrilla fightings and some part of France trying to hold up help by remnants of the military. In such a scenario the main threats for France is not an outside invasion they can fend off with their army but the widespread communist loyalties inside of France. For endings, the major factor of who of the communist nations or the capitalist one would win is not only about two armies fighting but about wich nations could remain united. With the only possibility for a communist winning shall be widespread communist loyalties and revolts in Britain or the USA who could force them to peace out while destroying their war effort. But if such a thing not happen, in the long run the industrial capacity of the allied shall outmash the one of the communist countries. That could be worsen if the communist countries go to far to fast on the ideological plan by constantly purging their army force to harsh communist reform on conquer countries and then lose the loyalties of their populations and their allied one while destroying their new communist allied industrial capacities. And opening the possibilities of treasons of part of the communist army or even some communist countries. That could even be worse if they are to harsh toward the defeated like by annexing some territories (for example a communist gover in France would lose any legitimacy if Germany annex Alsace). If the communist block go to far in some sort of permanent revolution theories they will end up losing with nothing working, a dysfunctional war economy, famines, under equip armies with soldiers not willing to fight for nothing. Just see the Spanish civil war with the republican dismantling because of constant purges, internal divisions, resulting in a poor leadership and at the end an overrun non supplied army. If URSS was so efficient during ww2 it was because their were supply by the USA and because they were united against a common treaty they cannot compromise with here it is not the case. Anyways good and fun alt history scenario. Two other interesting scenario could be what if colonialism don’t end in the XX centuries with France and Britain hold some of their colonies at any cost and the USA taking other some independent colonies for themselves ? And what if France invade Germany after the German move to annex the Rhineland in 1936 facing a not far away from non existing German army ? Note I write this commentary while I only watch half of the video.

It would not have happened in 1930. It would have started in 1939 like in our timeline because countries needed to replenish their population with the next generation of young men.

Good video! Only thing I find unrealistic is that Germany agrees to withdraw their military from the west. Also I can't really see hitler rising in this timeline since he was never really close with the Prussian military elite

The Prussian Military Elite is exactly why this imaginary timeline would never occur. I understand the exercise of this video, but IMHO, The Prussian influence isn't taken too much into account here. Yes there has always been a " German People", but Germany as a sovereign nation has a lot to due with Prussia influence, and wasn't that one of Hitler's campaign slogan's? One German people , one German Nation? Kind of similar to " lets make Deutschland Great Again" ( Ma.D.G.A?)
