No OS should dominate the world. Competition and the ability to switch to another OS is best for the user.

The Ideal situation for the computing market would be 3 or 4 main OSes. it would mean, say Windows would have to keep itself easily usable for a tech illiterate person who wants to swap from a gnome-style desktop. I think if ChromOS stops being shit we could see 3 comercially viable OSes in the mass market

They just need to learn and not use apps all day long because they are "gamers" when they use a gaming PC which is incompatible with TailsOS. Linux and Unix were created for developers and for complex tasks. I remember doing development in Windows and Apple, you need to pay licenses for having access to sections and libraries of the operating system. There is no workaround in many cases. A cashcow. Small companies go with Linux. If you change linux release all is good. If you talk about telemetry it all is done in the upper layers. Your browser will do the same regardless it is windows,apple,or linux.

There isn't anything that only works with a single Linux distro, there is package-exclusives yes, but it doesn't mean you can't repackage and port it to another distro, for example, discord only offers a .deb for Debian and Ubuntu, but you can use the Aur version, for example, the Copr version, the flatpak version, the browser version. There isn't anything that is exclusive in Linux, the kernel is all the same, any application that works on X works on Y and Z. + You don't need to opensource anything for it being on Linux, Linux users may want to use FOSS adobe-like software or they just can use the proprietary software, I really don't understand your point. ++ Linux already has Firewalls and virus is common sense, you get a virus because YOU downloaded something suspicious, it's not the OS fault. +++ Almost everything you said about security and legacy code in Linux aplies to Windows and MacOS, even worse in fact, since Linux you can choose the "Modules" that the system is going to use, don't like GNU? Don't use it. Don't like Xorg? Don't use it.

Linux aint ever taking over but it is going to continue to grow prob getting to the point its just below macOS in marketshare. I have friends wanting to swap that know NOTHING about Linux just simply due to the bad choices Microshaft is making lately and in their words "No game is worth what Microsoft is trying to do".. with that said Windows will always be the main os on the desktop but Linux will continue growing due to Valve because who would have thunk it would even have the marketshare it has now when it was stuck at 1% and below for DECADES until just a year or two ago.. its had about 300 times the growth in just the past couple years lol

I disagree with the competition part of closed source software, we have been on a contrarian way of competition of SME alternatives to an oligopoly controlled type system, it may be true on games, but there's no true alternative for productivity and job software, people have created a heavy dependency and integration on there social life and jobs that they can't change no matter how good the competition is.

Personally I use Debian Linux. But hate tech in my appliances. I don't need cameras on fridge or voice control on my microwave. I shouldn't have enough computing power on a refrigerator to game on. My whirlpool dish washer could use a lcd with timer on it. I hate having to run my Lg drier to get cloths dry. The wife noticed I like tech but prefer keep it simple stupid. I just need and expect stuff to run or work right. That old analog timer and switches last forever on driers. Like Speedqueen washer and driers. You should run a firewall now with Linux. Most distro's have firewall with them.

Linux belongs to severs and mobiles. It will never be able to lurk in to desktop space because it simply doesn't support many main stream softwares. Until it is addressed, it will never be a main stream usable desktop space. Using Linux made me depressed, like really, literally, I felt alone when using it, no joke. There is very little to no help when things go wrong. When I say this, Linux fan boys mock me like I have skill issue. No I am a fairly advanced user and a programmer myself. It's a real pain to get the things done in Linux.

I agree with the mainstream software being not available and the package format mess is preventing linux OS' competing with windows and macos. But they're not really that difficult to use once you properly learn how to use the terminal commands and once you learn how the operating system works (I mean the file system hierarchy, package management system, core command line tools, desktop environments, etc.). Once you're familiar with these things, It's actually a lot better to use than Windows or Mac. But that's the biggest problem. The user need to spend at least a year to really learn and understand the operating system. If you try to jump into the Linux OS too quickly without learning these things properly first, then it's very hard to use if you want to do anything more than just simply browse the web and do documents and stuff using the GUI programs.
@hydrilara2 күн бұрын
@Dinu5346 yeah, it takes some time to get familiar with the Linux system but for normal users it is not possible to invest so much time to learn new stuff. Being a programmer, I forced myself to learn but I don't think normal users go down this path.

It's a super modified version, yeah I agree, desktop Linux isn't perfect and have a lot of flaws, but it works better than Windows or MacOS in a lot of ways, the oposite is true too, just like everything Linux is evolving every day, in 5~10 years you WONT need to touch the commandline at all, today it's very limited use, you mostly use if you prefer, but you still need here and there.

@@katokianimation I already use Linux as a daily driver, i recomend you do is: Install Linux in a VM(if your computer can obviously) and try to use it for a week or two, if you find it does the job and you can actually use it partionate your system, continue with Window as a fall back, when you're a 100% comfortable with Linux you can use Windows in a VM(like me) for more specific tasks, like using Adobe software, it isn't perfect but it's the best aproach nowadays if the aplication doesn't work with Wine.
