Reminds me of when I had older family members that refused to adopt online banking, yet they would hand the credit card to a restaurant server multiple times a week and let them walk away with it.

privacy is a spectrum too though... every step is a step closer to total privacy but agree with you on shops and places knowing to much about us... though not everyone can go live off the land in the woods with no one knowing who you are... also anonymity and privacy are different... privacy is more of having the choice of telling who should know your information while anonymity is no one knowing who you are and you never sharing it with anyone

I would say it is like when you go outside (Internet)... of course it is not private. But if you are at home (your OS) you don´t want people to look into your window or come in to your house. The problem is not really the applications that do that, the problem is, that people have less and less control over it (or it is so hard to remove / disable, that you gave up on it). You really see and feel, how they try to find a way to hide ad and privacy stuff. Even in EU where you have to accept it.

The moment someone is born, they are not truly 100% private. There are always ways to link one thing to another.

I’ll probably kick myself later for this, but I don’t really care how much data they have on me, at least not yet. I live in America and I’m chronically ill, so all of my medical stuff feels like it’s out in the open. HIPPA only does so much. My pharmacists know what I take. I get pharmacy ads all the time. I get ads for electrolyte supplements. I get articles on my Google Chrome dashboard relating to my condition. Is it scary how much they know about me? Yeah, I suppose so. Do I care? Not yet. Sure, I get some pretty specific ads. They’re pretty predatory. But until something really, really starts to drain my money, I don’t think I care much. American medical care is already draining my accounts. What more can they do? They basically own my soul at this point.

Even for me in Germany, the whole privacy debate is nonsens. If you don't want your data used in any way burn your electronic devices - all of them - and go living in the woods... it is as simple as that. Ask those people if there are using Siri or Google Now and wait till they find out, that those devices need to listen to you to function propperly. I would rather take five Euros and talk to a parking meter. Futhermore i don't get why this whole thing is such a big deal, if i am important enough that my data usage matters - i will have the means to propperly take care of that. (And i will have so much money that it does not matter anymore). JMTC I have to say, that i really enjoy your style and your takes in general - it is obvious that you are a real "it guy" with the right mindset. I appreciate your work - it is a "breath of fresh air" against that whole OS, tech war. Thank you!

@@AZM1426 It's not 100% private. Own land? Govt knows. (cause you got it from them) Satellites, drones, thermals, will all reveal your location, other people's phones and security cameras are also a problem. its literally over.

I've had the whole "nobody knows who the fuck you are" experience, and I agree that it's pretty much a waste of time. Any benefit you might get from invisibility is immediately surmounted by inconvenience. If you walk into a shop covering your face and order with a prepaid gift card, you look like a mobster (and the police would agree). Mystery is a fun thing in theory, but nobody likes a total shut-in. Everything falls apart when you take such radical approaches to privacy. Nobody can vouch for you, nobody can trust you, and nobody can approach you. It's nothing but trouble.

Does "OS" mean "operational security", or "operating system", or something else...?
@Wkaelx2 күн бұрын
Opertating system, Like Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, IOS...
@SimGunther9 күн бұрын
Simple: no internet, no computing "convenience" from outside resources Ask yourself if you want to use a computer without any internet access. You'll realize very quickly that even the OS you get requires some internet connection unless you order a drive with all the packages you need to make the OS work at all. Anything goes wrong with a package that can't be easily fixed yourself with a source code change and you're stuck. So much outside info silo'd in the hands of a few companies it's embarrassing. Remember offline encyclopedias? That's what you'd need the moment it gets prohibitively expensive to pay an internet bill or visit a library.

If you're using Google's Chrome you probably can't use adblockers anymore, thou Firefox still allows adblocking, I don't know about Brave, Edge and Safari.

I can live with any OS as a daily driver, and I like things about Mac, Windows, and Linux. The difference for me is the price to performance ROI in regard to hardware upgrades on Linux/Win, along with a more open ecosystem. Privacy can be compromised or secured on any platform; user habits are the problem.

If you're on the the internet, it won't matter whether Qubes OS is on your computer, you won't have privacy. Unplug and personally compute like the Commodore 64 days.
