@TBE TBE Berbers (almoravids, almohads) ruled southern Iberia for about a century after they took control of the muslim taifas in southern Spain at the beginning of the 12th century, then the Navas of Tolosa in 1212 happened and Spain became almost entirely christian in a few decades. A few thousand Berber mercenaries were used in the conquest of Spain by the Umayyad Caliphate based in Damascus, (ie Syrians were part of the Arab contingent), Arabs who conquered and islamized the whole of North-Africa like they did with almost all of Spain. Arabs ruled yours and ours sorry asses during centuries, get your facts right.

I feel like this one could be expanded into a series. Exploring what empires would have expanded out and taken the Americas. Age of Exploration is becoming one of my favorite historical eras. When the Muslims had Iberia there was no Spain but there was a Portugal and before that Galicia, so I could see Portugal even in its small form setting sail anyways. So who knows after settling Brazil they could get so rich they could take over not just Muslim Iberia, but perhaps all of it. So maybe no Spain (that's fine, I like Portuguese better anyways haha). So perhaps the Portuguese would take what is now Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. The Guiana Plain would likely still go to other powers. England would still wait until the 1600s to get in the game, and France too. We could perhaps see more Dutch possessions. And for the fun of it, I'd like to see other powers colonize too. Maybe more from the Swedish Empire. And maybe one of the states of Italy (most likely Venice) could venture out and colonize. An Italian-speaking country in the Americas would be awesome to see! Maybe had the Holy Roman Empire stayed together longer, we would also see a German-speaking country too! Denmark could expand beyond just Iceland and Greenland too. As you can see, I love alternate history also and wish I could make videos like yours haha.

Gunfire completely changed the history of japan , and guess who cause that... at 0:43 there is a lot missing. Its like you didnt even researched portuguese history which is pretty important if you are going to make a video of alternate history... columbus was important? maybe , but he was just a player from genoa which actualy went to portugal first and would have gone to any other country if spain wasnt there. What about Vasco da gama , magellan? all this people who changed the world as we knew it. The spice trade even weakened the ottomans power in the arabia. All of this would have not happen if it wasnt for portuguese colonialism. So when you only talk about spanish conquistadores you are missing 50% of the history.

As a Portuguese, this theme is fascinating to me. Quick note: in the beginning you show a map of the portuguese and spanish empires (combined) however from the Portuguese Empire you only add Portugal and Brazil, you forgot all about the territories in Africa and Asia. Also while you are talking about the history of the Iberian Peninsula, I think you focused a little bit too much on Castille and Spain. For exemple Granada was conquered in 1492, but in 1415 the Portuguese has already started to conquer north Africa from the Moors. (Worth mentioning i guess). As for the scenario, it basically all you say makes perfect sense. Though I assume, the north Iberian states would eventually unify and become a powerful nation. Keep up the good work =)

To put 700 years into further perspective; the Black Death, which killed 1/3rd of all of Europe and a good bit of Asian, happened ALMOST 700 years ago in 1347. The time from the beginning of the Reconquista to the end lasted longer than the medieval ages to today. 700 years ago Europe was still feudal and there were still knights and templars.

@Ketler478 жыл бұрын
in the arab texts, translation from latin ones, after the 8th century after Christ, they translate the toponym Hispania with "الأندلس"= Al-Andalus. "Al" is a particle that many arab words include and that had an effect on many spanish vocab. "Andalus" is the word they uses as the toponym. The origin of that word is disputed, since there is no prior notice of it in arab before 711 after Christ, You cannot assure what the origin of it is, but even if you could, that doesn't change what I said in my first comment: They wrote "An-Andalus" when it is "Al-Andalus". I just wanted to point that mistake out.

Wars would be very different, and there likely wouldn’t be an American revolution at the scale of our timeline. That means napoleon doesn’t rise up, which is a whole can of worms by itself. Completely alternate wars would happen and the world wars would never happen. The 20th century is completely different. Germany, the Soviet Union, and all American countries wouldn’t exist or would be completely different.

The Iberian empires plaid a significant roll in introducing subsaharan slavery to the Americas. The Islamic empires had already been trading with subsaharan nations for slaves for many centuries, there were even notable African slave rebellions in Baghdad before 1000 AD. While this was on a much smaller scale than the later transatlantic slave trade, it introduced the idea of africans as slaves to the Iberian peninsula well before the discovery of the Americas. At the end of the Reconquista, African slaves were still seen as a status symbol by Christian Iberians. Around the same time, Portugal circumnavigated Africa and almost immediately established trading posts in subsaharan Africa, bypassing the Sahara, and trading directly for slaves. Portugal and Spain also accounted for the vast majority of slave imports from Africa. This was partially because they held much more land than other European powers, but mostly because slaves had much much higher rates of mortality in Spanish and Portuguese colonies than in colonies held by other European powers. This is largely because many of these slaves were used in dangerous mining operations. In fact, in the beginning, mining was the primary use of slaves in the Americas. It was only after the Spanish/Portuguese import of slaves for mining was well established, that slaves began to be used on a large scale for agriculture in both Spanish/Portuguese colonies, and the colonies of other European powers. It is also worth noting that before the establishment of this infrastructure, European powers first enslaved Native Americans within the colonies, which would have been more practical than importing slaves from Africa were it not for smallpox. While the nature of sugar crops and cotton certainly lent themselves to slavery or some form of indentured servitude, it's hard to imagine that this system would have emerged in the same way without the influence of Spain and Portugal. Unlike any other European country, Spain and Portugal started the age of exploration with subsaharan slaves, they were also the first European countries to trade with subsaharan Africa, and they initially brought the slaves to the Americas for mining, not for Agriculture. It's hard to imagine another European power, without Iberia's historical connections and geographic proximity to Africa, deciding to go to a random continent on the other side of the world to obtain slaves for agriculture in their new world colonies. I can imagine three alternate, not necessarily mutually exclusive, scenarios for the colonization of the Americas. The first is that rather than using African slaves, northern European colonies import their own forms of indentured servitude to the Americas. This means that the bulk of the agricultural and mining labor is done by a mix of Native American and European indentured servants. This would cause the industries to grow much more slowly than in our timeline, but they may have eventually reached the same scale. In this version of events, the majority of indentured servants would be white, and there would be very few slaves for life, although it's possible that Native Americans would have been racially associated with slavery. The system of indentured servitude would eventually be abolished, much earlier than slavery was in our timeline and in a much more gradual and peaceful way as it became economically irrelevant. It's possible that there would also be some trade with the muslim world for slaves, who would be of a more cosmopolitan origin, and maybe some eventual subsaharan trade, but it would be established much later and never reach the same scale. The second is that the Caribbean, the Deep south, and much of central and south America would remain largely Uncolonized. Because these regions were the major drivers of colonization, it would probably mean less colonization in North America as well. Without slave labor, settlements would be much less profitable, especially in hot, humid jungle regions with malaria and yellow fever. There would still be some incentive to colonise these areas - cotton, tobacco, and sugar would remain valuable commodities, and depopulation caused be small pox would create a demand for settler labor. The situation would be more complex though, and the industries would be much less profitable. The Colonization of the Americas would be very different in our timeline, in some regions resembling the 19th century colonization of Africa, and in other regions resembling the colonization of Australia. While most of the continent would eventually be subjugated, some regions would evolve into a patchwork of native dominated states (which would eventually get their independence from colonial overlords). These regions would be in the less economically profitable regions - the great plains, the tundra, the jungles of central and south americas, and regions less accessible to Europeans - bolivia, the rockies, and the amazon. Some Areas with large native populations, like Florida which put up a lot of resistance and British Columbia, which was had already recovered from small pox benefited greatly from indirect trade with Europeans before they made direct contact, may have remained effectively independent. There would also be several European dominated states, mostly in temperate regions like the midatlantic, northeast, and midwestern regions of the US (maybe also California), Quebec and Ontario in Canada, and Argentina. There might also be some tiny european dominated states in the Caribbean (in islands that never recovered from depopulation) and around critical trading points like the mouth of the Mississippi and the mouth of the Amazon. The whole continent would be less populous than it is today, as European colonization would have happened at a much lower scale, and the natives would still be recovering from the massive depopulation caused smallpox. The third is that development of the tobacco, cotton, and sugar industries is relatively slow and unprofitable until the industrial revolution. In this scenario, the Americas are conquered by the colonial powers during the age of exploration, but growth and settlement are very slow during this period. As a consequence, the local populations never really become significant enough to mount independence movements, and remain controlled by Europe. The industrial revolution, however, creates an immense demand for raw materials, and the expansion of European powers into Africa and South Asia creates a new supply of labor for agriculture. European countries would shuffle non-slave labor between their colonies, much like the British empire did in the 19th century during our timeline from, this would ultimately result in a large flow of population from Africa and south Asia to the Americas, especially the tropical regions. The result would be a very cosmopolitan and mixed race American continent.

I have some interesting scenarios to share: 1) central and south america would be muslim, but the united states and Canada would be rather the same (christian and well developed). Maybe a muslim Mexico would be stronger and resist the loss of territory it suffered. 2) Europe could be almost totally protestant, because the Habsburg dinasty would not have Spain. They were strong catholic defenders. Maybe the papacy would not resist against the Reform, and a central christian authority would cease to exist. In this scenario, France could be also protestant. 3) Austria, with weakened Habsburgs, would be conquered by the Ottomans. Even so, the collapse of the Ottomans would be inevitable. 4) England and France would be much less of rivals, because they would need to unite and protect themselves against muslim Spain and muslim Austria. 5) an german unification could happen earlier. Napoleon destroyed the Holy Roman and Prussia emerged later from the ashes. This could be prompted by the ottoman Austria. 6) Italy without the Pope has multiple possibilities, it would be either more French or more Ottoman. Let's stick with an French Italy. 7) a world war with these two blocks would be inevitable (protestant christians England France North America Italy vs. Muslims Spain Ottomans South América). 8) Assuming that Russia, Japan and China would be less affected, it is interesting to think if they would involve themselves in this WW.

actually, before the 1400s, Muslims were treated relatively well by Christians.. and many Muslims sought refuge with the Christians during the reign of the Almoravids and Almohads (extremist Muslims). Only later on did the Christians turn intolerant towards the Muslims, and a big reason is the increasing imperialism of the Turks (who invaded Europe and the Mediterranean from the east).

Interesting note: The Arabs had a lot of the knowledge that 'rebooted' Europe after the Dark Ages. That knowledge was captured during the Reconquista, but much was destroyed along the way. One of the reasons for the voyage that 'discovered' the Americas was that Columbus determined he could make it to China or even India. This is because European estimates of the size of the Earth were significantly smaller. The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians had fairly accurately determined the Earth's diameter, and the Arab nations had that information. It's likely that without evidence of somewhere to stop along the way, the initial discoveries of the 'New World' would have been by the Northwestern Europeans crossing the GIUK gap, since finding Iceland and then Greenland is not nearly as tough as crossing from Spain to the Bahamas.

Btw another treaty was signed where Portugal said "We get the African coast and you get the Canary islands and everything to the left" so "asking for the meridian to be a bit more to the left" is begging and a lie, they asked like 350+ km, if they had got the power they would had attacked Castille.
