@@Vorwatts There's some what if potential. What if Melisandre was sent instead of Thoros? Aerys was also massively horny so Mel is a double whammy. There's also Rhaegar who had conviction to prophecy. If Mel convinces him he is Azor Ahai reborn, R+L would've ended very differently. Maybe they end up in love and conceive but after that he stabs her heart to create Lightbringer. If he has that during the Rebellion, Robert is done for. And the realm would be different after. Religion, alliances, succession, even contention from Dorne over Elia's place, etc. Be fun to see or think about! ^^

Book! Stannis only allowed himself to convert into red God follower because he was at brink of war and needed melisandre's magic. Book fact about stannis, he doesn't believe in any God at all after his parents' death he only uses melisandre for political purposes. If stannis has renly, Tyrells and starks his side melisandre is out of his story since he does not need her if stannis is secured politically and military strength.

This is something most What Ifs don't ever factor in. Stannis embraced the Lord of Light out of desperation, not out of any religious zeal. He had few tools at his disposal and made use of Melisandre when he needed to. In this hypothetical timeline, Melisandre would never advance beyond advisor and Stannis would probably be persuaded by Davos and Renly to follow the conventions of the Seven for the stability of the realm, regardless of his personal beliefs (or lack thereof). By the same token, I don't think Davos would ever have risen quite so high either. Davos would probably remain within Stannis's inner circle, but probably not quite so influential when Stannis is immediately surrounded by the high lords of the Stormlands and the Reach at the war's start. Davos would probably end up Master of Ships in the aftermath, but not Hand. That would probably fall to Renly, since Stannis would feel compelled to give Renly the honor that he felt he deserved from Robert.

I personally think Renly would become Stannis' heir (either way he would, he would be before Shireen in the succession since he's a man) and then he could try to get rid of him OR if he's ultra loyal... simply get rid of any possibility of Stannis ever having a son. Therefore the Tyrells could still ally with Baratheons and marry Renly, cuz he still can become a king in this scenario. As long as Stannis doesn't re-marry and doesn't have a son, Renly's throne is pretty much secure.

Wouldn't matter, Joffrey was a serial k!ller. His cruelty to animals is explained in the books. He cut open a cat to see it's unborn kittens and skinned Tommen's fawn for a cloak or whatever. He uses rabbits for target practice with his crossbow. He's far beyond a kid sh00ting at birds with a BB G^n which already sets off red flags in this day and age.

Renly had the easiest path to the throne, and his impatience doomed him. If he allies with Stannis, the Lannisters have such a harder time fighting the full Baratheon, Tyrell and Stark forces. Once the war is won, or at least close to, making some sneaky deals behind the scenes is easy to remove Stannis from the picture. Renly is king, Margerie is queen, the Starks go home safe.

If Stannis and Renly join forces and take King’s Landing, it would lead to Sansa’s death, which could affect the Stark camp, particularly if Robb thinks it was Stannis’s forces who did it. There’s also the case of Varys: he’d go into hiding in an attempt to sow chaos before Young Griff is set to arrive, but Melisandre is bound to divine Varys’s attempts and location.

This is where book vs show come in. Loras has 2 older brothers, 1 of whom is already married, so there is another way for the Tyrells to marry into the throne, if they can wait a few years. If Stannis dies without a son, Renly is king and Margaery queen. If Stannis does have a son, perhaps either Willis or Garlan will have a daughter to betroth. Also, Stannis' relationship with the Lord of Light is fairly transactional in the books. He's not a true believer, but Selyse and the Florents and a bunch of their bannermen are. Stannis himself is not particularly adherent to any religion, more just how he interprets the law. Honestly, it feels like he keeps the Florents around because he is legally obligated to. They seem to cause more headaches than they are worth as military allies.

Also we know thanks to Oberyn that the Tyrell and the Martell are speaking to each other. So i think the Martell could be interested in the idea of having all of the kingdoms (potentially except the Eyrie and Iron islands) going for Tywin's head. At least, Oberyn would rally his own men just for justice. If Balon isn't that stupid, he might just go to attack Lannisport. Lots of gold, a little bit of prestige and an "act of good faith" towar the Baratheon family. Maybe the Arryns would pull a Walder Frey by sending a few soldiers, just in case. Stannis isn't a true believer i think until going to the wall and even then it's dubious. (at least in the books he doesn't seems to be 100% convinced in the last chapters). So maybe King's landing would get a new temple but i doubt it would be a new religion forced into the continent.

Since Dany had her own red priestess in Essos my thought is that Melisandre meets Danny knows that she is the Aozorahai and Stannis’ wife and daughter are shadow babied so he can wed Dany and I feel whatever magic made her barren Melisandre would try to reverse and once Dany is pregnant it will be Dany, Stannis and Co vs night king vs Olenna, Renly and Co note: if Jon’s parentage is revealed he’s gonna get a shadow baby, if she and Stannis are relatively peaceful rulers if not unpopular Varys stays loyal I also feel that since she can’t manipulate Stannis like everyone else they will either hate each other or actually get along well as neither is deceiving or underhanded

Renly siding with Stannis doesn’t matter for Stannis to win the war he has to act not like Stannis he would have to make peace with Robb stark after he declared himself king and he would never do that, and he would have to forgive the tyrells for fighting against him he is never gonna do that so he’s never gonna have that plus he is fully intent on replacing renly with a male heir

Yes and he has been trying for a male heir for a well over a decade with only one daughter to show for his and his wife’s efforts. So unless something unfortunate happens and he is in market for a new wife it’s very likely that Renly would be his successor if he had joined him from the beginning.

I doubt the Tyrells would marry Margeary to a Martell. As the two houses are historic rivals. And in the modern era. Mace Tyrell's eldest son, Willas was cripplied in a joust against Oberyn Martell. Which Mace blamed on Oberyn even though Mace pushed his son into tourneys too early. Willas himself holds no bad blood towards Oberyn though. The two are even decent friends.

This is how this scenario would end... Everything that has happened in the series has happened for a reason. In this, Stannis never goes north to the wall. Melisandre never meets Jon Snow to realize that he's the Prince Who Was Promised. Jon never has reason to take the wildings against Ramsey so therefore never dies and is never resurrected as a fire wight to defeat the Others. The Others get south of the wall and conquer Westeros. The end.

Tyrell's would still would want Margaery to marry Renly, and if he closes his eyes and thinks of Westeros often enough for his new wife to birth son, Olenna might help Stannis "make the room" for her great-grandson.

My one slight nitpick is the idea that Tywin is the only saving grace that the Lannisters have. Tywin's reputation doesn't represent represent his actual skill. His two biggest wins come from deceit and betrayal. Don't get me wrong he's a competent commander but he's nothing special. The ace on the Lannister's side is Kevan. Man's a fucking menace as a commander.

You are giving up on Ned too easily in this situation. Renly knew what would happen, and he knew Ned was backing Stannis so he let Ned go through with it to give him an opening to escape and follow his own ends. If he's backing Stannis, he'd understand The Hand of the King and Warden of the North, who has The King's Last Will and testament in his hands was way more valuable alive. Since Renly understood how much control the Lannisters had he would have told Ned they have control of everyone outside of Barristan and escaping in the night to Dragon Stone was the only way to keep his daughters safe. Then Renly and Ned could get Barristan in secret, show him the Kings words, tell him he had to come with them to protect them then send him with Ned, his remaining men, and his daughters to prepare Stannis, while he went on to Storm's End to call the Banners. Tywin understood the power Selmy lent the claim, and once Renly decided to side with Stannis/Ned he'd appreciate the value of the Commander of the King's guard added as well. Once Renly had so effectively and enthusiastically "done his duty" to his brother, Stannis having no male heirs would undoubtedly name Renly "Prince of Dragonstone" advancing the negotiation path with the reach, potentially ending this thing pretty quick, with the Lannister left with no allies surrounded on all sides.

Yeah. Three of them. The books went to shit at about the same point the show did. GRRM has never written an ending that wasn't shite. That's the part that takes talent. You can't fake it at that part by constantly throwing new characters and back story at people to make them think "Ooooh, what wonderful world-building!" If the books have a decent ending, it will be the first time Gurm has succeeded at that. I've seen nothing from him that gives me any faith whatsoever that he won't fuck it all up...IF he even gets to an ending. He doesn't seem to even like writing; he just likes making up new characters and back story, and describing what people are wearing and what they had for lunch. That's not writing. That's just one accessory to it. Yet there he is, still throwing in pointless new characters, FIVE books into the series! Hopefully we get a good ending, but realistically, I think most people are going to be disappointed. The last two books had an ungodly amount of filler in them.

Everyone says this book/show plot is sooo good but I find it to be very base. All of the characters make stupid decisions simply to move the plot forward. Besides Cersei whose stupidity is actually within reason for her character. There was NO reason for Renly to think he should be king and usurping his brother’s claim in the process is insane, it makes me wonder why he never tried to usurp Robert given how terrible of a ruler he was. And Stannis who is the rightful heir to the throne Renly thinks is incapable because he’s…stoic? Unbelievable. Literally. lol. Ned essentially died for Stannis’s claim to the throne and yet Cat sided with fuggin RENLY?! Nonsense.

Well, it would simplify things. He'd have the brains to send his army North to fight the Night King. In fact, while he was up there, he might just point out that sending the Dothraki charging blindly into battle, having trebuchets outside the walls, etc, were all stupid ideas. And Stannis wouldn't pull a cersei with dragons outside the gates. He'd do what it took. Pay a Faceless Man to eliminate Daenerys, maybe. It depends how stannis and Renly share power, and how much say Renly has in military affairs. The Northern army would also remain intact, and there would be no Red Wedding, so all the KZbin reaction channels would cease to exist. And wouldn't everyone be sad about that!

Literally all the houses that picked Renly they could have picked Stannis after Renly's death and not all of them choose Stannis.
