What if Terastallization DOUBLED resistance?

The Terastal Phenomenon, love it or hate it, it's probably going to be gone in the next Generation. I have a question. Why does Terastallizing into a matching type boost damage, but not boost resistance? Switching to any type on a whim, is a strong mechanic. Why not give a little defensive reward for sacrificing flexibility and doubling down on your own type? This isn't a change that I find necessary, in fact, it doesn't help Normal types at all! I just wondered what it would would change regardless. After all, someone could repurpose the idea for their own game mechanic.
This video (and the next 5) have been scripted and story boarded since mid-June, but the voiceover is the main bottleneck. It's like the one thing I shouldn't outsource (if I could pay to outsource). It'll get better with time, but everything else is way more fun. The sooner I get videos out, the sooner I can discuss and hear your sides of the argument.
As usual, check the pinned comment for corrections and updates from me and the community!

Check under here for info and corrections: This idea came about because seeing pokémon covered in crystals made me wonder why it wasn't protective in any way when you Tera into your own type. Also, I'm sorry Normal-Types...

Thing is, by the same logic Pokemon should keep their resists no matter what type they terastallize into basically acting as a second or third type just like it does with Offensive terastallize. This would also mean that pokemon would keep their weaknesses and double down on their weaknesses in case of being double that type. Thing is, changing the type of a pokemon is in itself a purely defensive mechanic, the added benefit of getting to keep acting like you still have your types is purely to not make you shoot yourself in the foot for terastallizeand the double stab is a logical conclusion to this concept, with the added benefit of rewarding you for choosing to "stay with your type" which would otherwise don't do anything. Basically your change (exactly like you proposed) would drasically reduce the amount of tera types used, because choosing one of your existing types would generally be the best choice, while also disproportionally buffing pokemon with already good typing, pokemon who have traditionally been strong already.

I feel like, as some others have suggested, that if it also doubled up on the weakness (Steel Tera Escavalier being quad weak to Fighting, Ground, and Fire), it might be a fun off the wall thing to try. It would probably still be too powerful, and might even make things a little complicated to keep track of, but hey this is just a thought experiment. It would very easily become a rich get richer situation, where Steel and Water Types become even better, and Ice and Normal are dug up from their graves just to be ripped apart again. Without this added "double weakness" part, Kingambit could go Steel for the even higher damage on Iron Head plus 10 quad resists and an immunity. Or Tera Fairy Valiant having even more damage on Moonblast/Spirit Break, and just two weaknesses? Yeah, I really don't ever want to see that released on the world.

This change would take kingambit from ‘Unpredictably defensive and only needing one turn to win’ to an even worse version of that issue. And that’s hilarious to me

On first reaction to the thumbnail: oh god this sounds like a terrible idea Hearing it only applies on the same type teras: hang on no this sounds actually really cool Hearing Steel Teras now would have 10 quad resists: oh god this sounds like a terrible idea In all actuality its a really cool thought experiment and while it doesnt work at all for most of my favorite pokemon(dudunsparce im sorry my child) it certainly makes same type tera less of an opportunity cost because even if you have a pokemon who DOES want the added power on their STAB moves thats now causing them to lose the main utility of Tera, giving your opponent a coin flip for literally every single turn of the game on whether or not Kingambit will suddenly resist or become immune to its main weaknesses As someone who doesnt like how all encompassing Tera is, especially since in the main story youre basically stuck with same type teras, i certainly think this would make me use it more in the plot but hate gen 9 competive even more Edit: on second thought I would also like the suggest double Weaknesses as well(please stop looking at me like that Snorunt) for 2 reasons 1 I think having a bit more risk would at least even out the absolute high of Double Steel(death to Mach punch/vacuum wave is a pretty simple to stop it from being OP) at the risk of making it even more feast/famine on behalf of two of my favorite types 2 I think Tera is a bit too "Free" besides using your 1 Tera for a battle/heal trip there's next to no cost to using it, no Item slot you're giving up, which balanced out Z Moves because losing your Choice Scarf or Life Orb was a pretty big decision and Megas were so telegraphed that stacking Mega capable pokemon was a valid strat just to hide your Mega. Dynamax was similarly Free and busted and it got banned. Putting an actual risk on Tera by making a pokemon who's tera'd into the type equivalent of Deoxys sounds like a better balancing point. If you get hit by something you resist, great! Especially if it was something you used to be neutral to and now resist like electric on Tera Grass Ludlicolo, but if you are hit by something you're weak to like Electric on Tera Water Ludlicolo you fold like a house of cards

Yep, you got it exactly. I've kind of accepted that Tera is extremely volatile for competitive play, but this modification could offer some defensive options into Nuzlockes or romhacks that decide to include Tera (especially given the Tera Shard costs of switching types). But as you pointed out RIP Normal, Ice, and other types with resists that already don't matter.

I think it would have been cooler to add a third type. Those are already in the game, with moves like forrest curse. It would have been much more interesting to play around with all the new combinations that would open up, and tera would have been less "swingy". You can no longer completely change your weaknesses, you can at most change a weakness to a neutral matchup. But on the other hand, Pokemon would retain more of their identity Tera turns everything into mono types and those are boring. But seeing a ghost dark fairy type for the first time, and thinking about the weaknesses etc, that would be interesting

If you were to give a double resistance surely you would also need to turn it into a double weakness at the same time. At that point I don’t think people would be so keen on turning into your own type.

I don't have a source on hand, but I'm pretty sure I've seen an interview where Gamefreak said that they put in a new mechanic each generation in order to make it feel new and different each time. From purely a gameplay PoV, there is some merit to that. But from a continuity and lore standpoint, it honestly sucks for it to be this way. The singular bad thing about megas is that they were overcentralized into competitive. Imagine if we only had megas, and they decided to tune the +100 stats down to +70, for example. And the bad offenders would have more signficant stat boosts taken away, like Mawile and Salamence.

I only play VGC, so I'm speaking from this perspective, but I think this change wouldn't affect competitive pokemon at all because there aren't any practica scenarios where this provides value. Take Skeledirge, for example. Why would the opponent ever use something like Energy Ball or Fire Blast on it in the first place, tera or not? It would only be to finish off an already near death Skeledirge, in which case, tera is more than likely not worth it (unless it's your last mon). It is much better to hit for neutral or super effective damage. You won't be receiving Psychic, or Bug Buzz, or Flare Blitz, you'll be getting hit by Stone Edge, Wave Crash, Shadow Ball, Rock Slide, Earthquake, Stomping Tantrum, etc. so you should be using your tera to either defend yourself against those moves or use it to hit as hard as possible before you faint, not to defend yourself from moves you are already good against, and thus won't be hit by.

Yeah, it's obvious, but we're in an online space, and people comment before thinking online. If I say anything definitive like "Terastallization IS a mechanic limited to Generation 9", but it ends up coming back in Generation 10 against all odds, there will be a fair amount of people that will see this video because of the topic. People will likely make some unproductive comments about how that's not accurate, without checking the date of the video, without checking the pinned comment that corrects that, or checking the other comments that say the same thing. So to cover my bases I usually avoid speaking using definitive speech. The internet is full of endless pedantry, so it's a good idea to preemptively avoid it. Though, only when it's easy. I don't bend over backwards to do it though. For example, if I call Dunsparce bad in a video about Gen 2, someone's gonna rant about how good it was on their team in Gen 4, and how other pokemon are worse. So even though it's a video about Gen 2 and dunsparce is still bad, even if other things are worse, it's better to say: "In Generation 2, Dunsparce is generally a bad pokémon". You communicate that Dunsparce is bad, and cover the exceptions. Yeah, some people might call out how redundant it sounds, but you can't please everyone. At least they can fast forward.

There's no question that would be broken. But still, who would be able to abuse it best? What would come of this terrible ecosystem?
@ElenaPog
@ElenaPog 11 ай бұрын
Ok overall it’s already a broken idea, like that’s known but I’d argue it’s not as broken as it seems? Since, at least personally, I think defensive threats like kingambit or tyranitar would rather Tera to avoid super effective attacks like their quad fighting weakness, or ground weakness thus something like Tera flying is good. I feel a decent majority of defensive bruiser mons wouldn’t be chipped down by not very effective moves and rather just be swapped in on for super effective, or powerful neutral moves
@CammyMeeleTea

I agree, I see it as a change that's pointless because it just amplifies what already exists, and if the type defensively has nothing, then they get nothing. Like Normal and Ice. But I didn't want to conclude that without seeing if someone could bring up valid arguments for how useful it is. For example, right now it's pretty rare to Tera to become Normal if you weren't already. Yet, it has a very iconic use with Dragonite competitively. If it ends up not mattering in competitive, but ends up being engaging and useful for singleplayer or Nuzlockes, that be cool too.
I buffed Ice, but are the dual types any better? (3 of 3)
