What if the Careers had killed Peeta on the first day?

Hi friends! Today we take a look at how the first day of the 74th Hunger Games could have gone differently and how that would have affected the rest of the Games!
Peeta joins the Careers in order to save his life, and Katniss's life by extension. However, this is an unusual agreement for the Careers to make. So what would have changed had Peeta been killed?

Katniss Mellark it was in the first book/movie. As in the books you can read Katniss inner thoughts. In the first book she has to keep reminding herself she is “in love” with him. However, in the second book she does fall in love with him and you see her decide she wants him instead of Gale. 😊

I think it's because they were brainwashed into being killers and thinking that winning the Hunger Games is the most honourable thing. They probably couldn't imagine that someone would not take every chance to kill the others in the arena and that someone could value another life over his own and try to protect someone else in the Hunger Games instead of trying to survive and win.

imo it’s probably plot armour but i like to explain it with the idea that they wanted peeta specifically to watch them kill her. their one taunt for him was that he was in love with her, calling him “loverboy” but their grievances with katniss were in other things like her score and popularity after upstaging them with her flames. killing peeta in front of katniss wouldn’t garner the same response as forcing peeta to watch katniss be killed, especially since at the time katniss believes peeta has betrayed her.

Nothing is certain. Likely they would’ve been trained in that thought. Which means it made sense to it kill Peeta until Katniss was dead. He was a far easier and less dangerous target in their minds. And if they believed the live story even slightly they likely assumed he was helping with ulterior motives and if the love story was true, killing Petra might make Katniss an even bigger foe.

If I truly was a career. We don't need Peeta to find Katniss. As Soon as he said "let's just wait her out". Unfortunately I would of killed him right there. To come off intimating to the other tributes and to really scary Katniss. If Katniss won the games. She won't of joined the rebellion right away. There's not really any other career choice for her in district 12. So I think she would really value her Career as a mentor. Haymitch being a drunk, the rebels would of trusted him with 0 information. The rebellion would of been postponed until someone else could become the public figure. The only way to turn Katniss against the capital is touch her little sister Prim. It no longer has to be Katniss as the mocking Jay. It can be anyone. Katniss was more of an image not a leader.

@Lilah Gettler Cutting down the tree would make it fall against one of the neighbour trees, mayb that one where Rue was hiding. It would be neccessary to cut down half a forest. Next problem would be the nest of tracker jackers....if it damaged by the falling tree and came completely down. And it is not simple to burn a tree in a wet forest. The best would be: Making a fire under the tree from dried pieces of would and then throw wet/green branches on top...the smoke could make it very unpleasant for katniss....but only if there was no wind. Remember: the fire the gamemakers made was not a burning forest. Even the trees survived all that gamemakers fire.

I agree that Katniss would win, however, without Peeta, Foxface wouldn't have been able to "accidentally" eat the berries, so she might make it into the top two and also hide in a tree. I was actually going to suggest this to you! I've been thinking about what would have happened if Peeta died before the rule change (or even before Katniss could get to him), and you've covered it so well! This would definitely change not only Katniss' life, but also the chances of future tributes from District 12, as you said. Katniss and Haymitch would work together to help tributes survive future games, and would have met other victors (like Johanna and Finnick) over the years. But I also wonder if Katniss would've been part of the 'desirable' victors that Snow sells, and if so, how would she have reacted? One option is that because of the 'star-crossed lovers' angle, Snow might have left her alone. In addition, the rebellion would have taken a few more years to achieve because then Katniss does not become the Mockingjay (since she hadn't pulled out the berries) and so the rebels don't have a figurehead yet.

I’ve always thought about what would’ve happened to Katniss if Peeta had died at some point when she was taking care of him. In the books we can clearly see how quickly she becomes attached to him. Not in love with him quite yet but starting to feel something for him. At the end, after the rule change was revoked she says she knows if he dies she’ll never escape the arena and always try to think her way out. I think she would’ve gone crazy if she had lost him at that point and ended up like Haymitch or worse.

I think it's possible Clove would have survived if Peeta was dead. In the books, I believe Katniss stated that she would have stayed far away from the feast if not for Peeta's medicine. She had food, water, and a weapon, so she likely would have skipped it. While this may not be the best decision, I think it would probably be the one she would have made. If she wasn't at the feast, Clove would likely live, as she wouldn't have said Rue's name, prompting a revenge kill from Thresh. In this scenario, I wonder who would have won.

I would say that Katniss would have been killed soon after as Peeta wouldn't have been there to save her when she was under the influence of the tracker jacker venom, and that would have been that. I mean, that was why he got so seriously injured, because he was attacked after he protected her and made it clear he was in no way on the side of the careers. And yeah, without him being there to scream at her to run, and face down that attack in order to give her that chance to escape, she would have been killed, and Cato would have likely won.

I agree with all of this but you forgot one thing. Of Peeta had been killed he wouldn’t have told Katniss to run after she was stung by the Tracker Jackers. Therefore, the careers might have com back and killed her. But otherwise great video!

The only thing he really offered was to find Katniss, but I'm sure tracking would have been taught at the academies Personally, I'd do the same I feel like killing one of the "Star Crossed Lovers" so early on in the games without a strong reason could cost me some sponsors Plus why waste any extra effort tracking when you could have someone else do it

Also, i hv a thought! The main reason Katniss agreed to be the mockingjay was for Peeta, so that he can be saved ASAP. So, she might not hv even helped with the rebellion at all, especially considering she wouldnt hv pulled out the berries. Unless it was her and Rue (assuming Rue somehow survives this far)

I am in love with your videos! From every video I learn more about the hunger games, which I love! Off topic, I read yesterday that District 1 (the battle of district 1), was one of the first districts to fight and break free from capitol rule during the rebellion - even though they seem to be the more fortunate and have more “friendship” with the capitol. Do you think this “friendship” was used as an advantage by district 1, and inside they was against capitol rule, which is why they rose up and fought first in the rebellion? Cashmere, for example, seemed angry and upset to be in the 75th hunger games. Do you think that district 1 used the capitol to their advantage, but waited for the right time to turn on them? I've 2 theories of a ending of the 74th HG, if Peeta died before Rue died, which also means that Foxface wouldn't accidently kill herself with the berries. She stole them from the food suplies of Katniss and Peeta and he was the one who put it there because unlike Katniss, he and Foxface didn't know the berries were poisoned. The rule for 2 victors wouldn't be created and Katniss wouldn't have to wait until Peeta was sleeping for running to the cornucopia and taking the backpack. Maybe Katniss would've taken her backpack before Foxface started running and Clove would've killed Foxface instead of being killed by Tresh. Maybe Clove and Cato would've killed him together. It's possible that Katniss would climb a tree instead of runnig away from the muts. She didn't do it in the books. But it's confusing that Peeta wasn't able to climb a tree but he climbed on top of the cornucopia ??? But Whatever, I believe that Clove and Cato would've killed Katniss and Foxface, if the muts didn't kill the well trained killers of D2 But if Foxface and Katniss survived, maybe Katniss would've killed her to be sent back home to her sister. I also believe, that if Katniss would've been the only victor, the capitol woud've suggested a similar cruel deal tor her like they did with Johanna Mason. So Katniss or one of the killers from district 2 would've won the HG, if Peeta died earlier than Rue, but based on her reaction, when she ran into Katniss at the first day, I don't believe Foxface would win the HG, because I can't believe she would kill someone (maybe I underestimate her).

I'm not sure the feast would have happened if Peeta had died. I always interpreted the feast as an event that happened because it would force Katniss specifically into an bloody confrontation with at least Cato, who always had it out for her. Snow didn't want her to win, so dangling an irresistible price in front of her guaranteed her going and most likely getting killed by one of the Careers. The only gifts we know the other tributes got weren't nearly as important as Peeta's medicine. So I don't think the feast would have happened without Peeta's injury just like the rule change.

Ik you said in the video that the rule change would not happen. But what if the rule change was intended for Cato and Clove? Maybe this would explain why the rule change was revoked when only Katniss and Peeta were left. After all I’m pretty sure Cato and Clove were well liked by the capital. They also most likely got a lot of sponsors because of their training scores.

When it comes to the Feast, I don’t think she would’ve gone. Although, if she did, it would’ve been because she was still feeling really violent from Rue’s death. In the book before she teamed up with Peeta that she was ready to kill anyone. So she would’ve either not gone to the beast at all, or she would’ve hid out and just tried to kill everyone at one time.

This is what I think would have happened if the careers killed peeta. 1. Peeta said that they should wait for katniss to come down,he camouflaged katniss, and tried to save her from kato. If he wasn't there to do all this katniss might not be alive. 2. If katniss was alive the rebelion would have started much later. She wouldn't be the Mockingjay since the main reason why she was seen as a rebel was because she wanted to eat the berries. The rebels would have to find a new image because katniss only agreed to apart of the rebelion to save Peeta from snow. 3. Katniss was the one that killed Coin so if she wasn't apart of the rebelion there would be a new uprising against Coin and many people would have to face another dictator.

Would the game makers rig a the games so theres always a victor in every district? or would a victor from a different district mentor them?

Very interesting points. It could either way for katniss. Without peetas help leading them away from her. But with no nightlock berries necesarry, katniss may not have beem compelled to be the mockingjay as snow would not have wanted her dead. But I do not think the story would have bern as good without peeta living.

I've been think about whether the Capitol would punish adults for not having kids. Because if people dont have kids, theres no new children being eligible for the reaping, and therefore no Hunger Games.

The fact that the careers believed Peeta when he said he’d help them find Katniss shows how dumb they must be. Peeta’s whole angle is that he loves her. If Peeta wants to get sponsors or anything, don’t you think he’s stick with that angle? At least longer than the first day?

I think katniss would win because after she finds out peeta was killed by the careers she would go on a path of revenge and team up with thresh ,rue , and foxface but she wouldn't be the Mockingjay she would be an entirely different person

If you think about it this way if PETA had died on day one they wouldn’t have made the twist that you needed to have a partner from the same district with two winners therefore cato most likely wouldn’t have gone to cloves side and would not have killed thresh I think that thresh would’ve been alive by this point in the games if PETA had died and he could’ve possibly win

How would Foxface have died because Katniss wouldn't have gotten the nightlock berries so would she have commited other suicide or could she have lasted until the finale then would she die or does she have an advantage because katniss/Cato don't know her "special skill"

Foxface could have died from a myriad of different ways, she would not have been able to overpower either Cato or Katniss, or the mutts for example

I think Katniss should have won and let peetta die. Petta had already accepted his death during the time in the capital. It would have worked out the rebellion would have started as normal but I don't think the effect would have been the same and likely the hunger games would have been more brutal. The fact still remains. With an effective ideal, Katniss and petta going through and living made the rebel attack more efficient but then again what would stop the rebellion from succeeding as Katniss had already experienced how bad the capital truly was with the help of all the rebels and the existence of district 13

we could assume that rue would die at the same point, as would marvel. so it would come down to clove, cato, katniss and thresh. thresh would still kill clove, and cato would kill thresh, and i think cato would still be killed by the mutts

I think that if peeta died day 1 chances are you wouldn’t see the death of glimmer. Because they wouldn’t have caught up to katniss at that time. It would have been much slower. Maybe the careers went after thresh first. Then if rue and katniss align later in the games instead of just marvel ambushing katniss it would be him and glimmer. In any scenario thou I could see 1 of the career pack winning the 74th games. My bet would be on clove thou. Assuming in this story she dident get killed by thresh at the feast

U forgot Foxface. If peeta was dead she wouldnt have eaten nightlock, and then she would probably also hide in a tree, and if we think that her death was suicide not hunger wich lead to her dead then she would probably recieve food at the feast. So she didnt need food. And since cato was at the cornucopia it would probably not take long for them to get to him and kill him. Then katniss would probably go down to search for foxface and then the muts would kill her. And then Foxface would win

Foxface wouldn't have eaten the berries because it was Peeta who picked them (and no I don't believe in the suicide theory because there is nothing in the books that tells us what she did in the training so that scene when she showed her skill with plants might not have been at all.)

if the final matchup of the 74th hunger games is Katniss vs Cato, how would foxface's death happen? You forgot to mention that. We all know how sneaky and elusive that district 5 girl is. In the original scenario, she outlasted some of the fiercest competitors like Thresh, Clove, and Marvel. She made it to the final 4 in the book. And she died cuz she "unknowingly" consumed nightlock berries Peeta thought were edible. If it were down to Katniss, Cato, and Foxface, I really wonder how her death would play out. She would've probably died from hunger (that's why it's called the hunger games 😂). Cuz she's like a toothpick in Cato's eyes. And she wouldn't be that stupid to steal from Katniss as she's a seasoned hunter
