In all honesty, nothing is actual Predictions as in facts. as weird as it sounds, everything is just Theory. We can argue today forever for example about the path of our sun. But with the ever-changing forms of knowledge and know how we honestly can't say anything about it. Much like you said, how can they say this when we can't even predict the weather. My favorite part about humanity is how we have been on this planet for so little time, yet we often forget that in itself. We have theories, yes, but we don't have actual evidence per say. Like with the weather think of it like a percentage of what can happen. I best thought is this, it wouldn't happen in the way we think it would. I don't see humanity letting it happen in the first place. If this happens as they theorize it to, mankind too would be rather advance, and I can't see us letting our home planet die. We'd probably figure out many different means to deal with the sun itself, it's signs and so forth. Because during the next billion years or so we would have witnessed if this theory is true via other stars doing the same thing in the same class as ours, we would have been able to figure out a counter potentially or even more so just built a means to protect our planet, our home from such horrors. Massive blurb i know, but You brought up a very great point and I just thought I'd toss in my own little flow of thought on it.

Basically correct. Given the vastness of space between stars the likelihood of actual collisions among stars and planets would be remote. Depending on the mass and gravitation pull of the two galaxies however one would lose mass while the other gained. That would invariably result in the destruction of some stars and planets or their ejection altogether to become rogues. Have a nice day.

From what we know, both galaxies are closing, albeit on galactic scales. When we pass by, we are not sure whether the two galaxies would combine, based on the black holes at their cores, or whether they might miraculously pass thru, changing only due to gravitational effects at a distance and the occasional actual collision and resultant destruction of individual solar systems...

As far as know, they will collide, though for something as diffuse as a galaxy, that would not be a problem for many, if not most, of the solar systems. The galactic centers, with presumably huge black holes, would be quite a problem, with energy and gravity effects that would disrupt and/or destroy all before it. But that's not for eons.

Scientists said that the solar system would actually be largely unnafected by the collision, since we're so far away from the centre of our galaxy. The collision would probably effect alot of the stars and planets etc a few thousand light years away from the centre, since its two black holes merging. The only way we would probably know is a really bright light in the sky.
