What if for 12 hours a year, there were no laws across the US? This is the scenario in the Purge film series, but I ask, what if the Purge was actually policy in the US? Here is one scenario.

Every time I think about stories like this, I always wonder: "How does the rest of the world react?" The USA is not an island unto itself - you'd think someone in Europe, Russia, China, let alone the immediate neighbours of Canada and Mexico would either object or exploit the chaos to their benefit. Hell, what about international crimes committed during the Purge? What about potential tourists caught in the crossfire? Does one seriously think the other nations wouldn't raise hell if their own got massacred (literally and otherwise) because of stupid homeland policy?

China and USSR killed tons of people for real reasons and not because "lol no law in effect this night". Soviets killed political opponents and criminals that were viewed as harmful to the state. Chinese killed tons of people in a famine as China needed to industrialize quickly and the famine was caused by the inudstiralization. So none killed their population just because and purge wouldn't have any good effect on either of the countries.

Dunno whether you've heard of a fairly recent game named 'Hatred'. It is likely about as close as we will get to an all out 'Purge' game. I doubt that a game where reckless violence and brutal murder of innocents is not met with any form of law retaliation would ever be green-lighted and published. The only real feasible way for the game to be released, was if you were playing a Frank Grillo type role i.e protecting an innocent and only harming violent and armed Purgers

Even if, in practice, you could target the wealthy it's not likely to succeed unless they are the type to partake in the event themselves. Plus, in real life, most people aren't interested in theft or murder. It's why we have social contracts to prohibit such behavior. If a group of politicians actually legalized such things they wouldn't be representing the majority opinion. It's only in situations of extreme poverty or supply shortages that people act out and even then it's only to survive. For example, I recall a case of armed robbery where, when the guy realized how little cash was kept in the drawer he gave it back and apologized. Then he explained his child will die without an expensive medical procedure and that's why he did it. That's the kind of motivation most would have to actually participate and that would make the property of the wealthy potential targets, but since these are usually otherwise good people they aren't likely to be very violent. There would be some people who would take advantage of the situation who would be violent, but chances are high that these types of people would die very quickly robbing the wrong person. Heck, if all crime is legal, then it means the rich could install auto firing turrets which is otherwise illegal. In any case I'm inclined to believe that not only would the upper 1% be able to remove themselves from the situation, but they'd have defenses most wouldn't which would make them less likely to be targeted.

I would think it would pan out in a similar manner as the anime/live adaptation went, with Kira ridding the world of criminals and becoming the "god" of the new world. Most likely governments around the world would fall in place if no one was able to stop Kira since Kira could easily Google search the names of world leaders and kill them all in less than an hour if he wanted. In the end, if per say the world didn't have a super genius like L or... Near (I just couldn't get behind the kid like I could with L) than after sometime the people would accept Kira's judgement as law and actively support and aid him in anyway possible; since from the outside he protects them. (That's how you control the world, not through active terrorism and destruction, but by getting the people to love you, to die for you willingly if necessary, or just from behind the shadows and let the people believe they are free when they aren't.) Governments would be too afraid along with local police to interfere and the world would continue to move forward with Kira's hand holding it in place. That's how I would see it going down. The Internet was Kira's best friend when he was getting rid of the major criminals of the world and he could easily use that again to kill off corrupt politicians and activists who stood against him and his message

After the US, Japan and most other nations accept Kira's rule, and after Near is killed, a tightly-knit-together alliance of nations forms that vows to do everything they can to destroy Kira. To keep their populations on their side, these nations would heavily misrepresent Kira in propaganda, and would often outright lie about him. Exactly who would be in this alliance is hard to tell but it would probably include most nations with a massive government control over their media (So countries like China, Iran, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Venezuela etc etc). After Kira inevitably kills the known leaders of these countries, secret leaders would take their place who would never show their names/faces (much like L did in the first few episodes). From the Lind L Tailor incident it would be well known that Kira is in Japan, and this alliance could probably get more into through spying and the work of their own new generation of Ls/Nears. After the pro-Kira nations refuse to capture Kira, it is likely the anti-Kira alliance would begin a full-out war and invade Japan, among other possible Kira locations. Then either the alliance captures and kills Kira (unlikely), or they fail to find him and instead use nuclear weapons on every place they think he could be hiding. What happens next would closely resemble the great war in Fallout. Kira would probably see all this coming and be hiding in a nuclear shelter when this happens.

Chris Gaming Damn... that would be a very scary way to find just one man, or woman if this took place in another universe. I love this idea of yours, Chris, the world might very well be fractured but my problem is the world would see a dramatic drop in crime and possibly the closure of prisons since the population would be near zero, so why would anyone want to go against that? That's why I like Misa's origins, at least in the live adaptation version. He killed the man who killed her family after he was about to be release from prison on early parole. That gives her reason to like him and support his message. Also if we're talking about a world where Kira did kill both L and Near along with everyone else that was with him that day and possibly anyone else including his girlfriend (or wife, I don't know if he ever married Misa in the anime/book) who knew him, how would anyone trust any country? I know if I was Kira I would immediately leave Japan after that nightmare of a showdown. Maybe not (immediately) but I would not stick around where the whole world possibly know where I reside. Also, would the whole world really go to the nuclear weapons just for one guy? That seems extreme. I could easily see governments trying to make Kira out as a monster, a criminal and keep the people on their side, but if the people saw him/her (I don't think anyone really learns Kira's gender except for a few people) killing those who were criminals, why wouldn't they support this person? You could see it in both the anime and live adaptation. You can't hide the fact or really misconscrew his intentions. The only way is if he started killing innocent people on a mass scale. If he killed a politician, most people wouldn't give a damn because politicians are already seen as corrupt individuals already. If he killed a dictator, people would fall to their knees for Kira. And those that do would actively hunt for others who would go against his message. Kira would have to become so mad with power that he would kill innocent people on a wide scale at this point to turn the people away from him (which I don't think Kira would do given the fact it's been established he's on par with L.) That's why I would think if Kira had achieved his plans, there would be nothing people could do, especially if he killed everyone who knew who he was and became a ghost in the wind. Lastly after so many years of constantly passing judgments people would become too afraid of even trying to commit crimes and would die from knowing people would be too scared to commit crimes. Honestly this is a pretty fun debate to have and an interesting "what if" scenario to explore. Personally I actually surprisingly enough like how the live adaptation of Death Note went. I found Light in that version a more humane and more natural character than the pretty infallible Light from the anime, taking at least two or so episodes before Light begrudgingly starts killing people after stopping a man from killing his father.

MrRjwagner The reason so many nations with the power to bend their population to their side would want to kill Kira is that he is basically doing whatever he wants with no supervision whatsoever. Not only would so many governments feel threatened by this, but many may even want this ability for themselves (for example, I doubt Kim Jong-Un would hesitate to get his hands on a death note). I agree that Light and Misa would probably leave Japan once they know about the Anti-Kira Alliance (I'm just going to call them the AKA for short). As for the 'They wouldn't even think about using their nuclear weapons' bit, you have to understand just how desperate the AKA would be by this point. To 'ensure' their success in killing Kira the AKA would probably have planned everything years in advance, and built up nuclear arsenals that make the former USSR's stockpiles look like nothing. Remember, this isn't a normal nuclear apocalypse. The AKA would have the sole intent to target as many populated areas as possible to have the highest chance of killing Kira (who would just be chillin' in an impenetrable vault or something). As for the 'but everyone liked Kira by the end' bit, remember that we only know that this is happening in the 'western' world (most notably Japan and North America), so it is highly likely the AKA nations would be able to manipulate the media in a way that makes their populations have a very different view of Kira. Also, I'm almost certain the AKA would build up its own army of 'Ls'. These may be able to find out more about Kira.

Chris Gaming Good point. However I just can't see people standing with their governments than. Even if it was on a very tactical level and not bombs like the Hydrogen/Atom bomb how would any sane individual stay loyal to that government? Call me naive, but I don't think I would trust my government if they are bombing civilian targets on a possible daily bases. Hell, I barely trust our government right now after all I've seen. See, I would think Kira wouldn't just kill people in countries like America, the U.K., and Japan and so forth. I figured during that montage of deaths in the anime it included terrorists living in Iran and Afghanistan and many others. I thought he even said to the Shinigami at that point that he "eliminated all the major criminals of the world." I can't remember exactly if that's what he said in the anime, but I think it's roughly what was said when the Reaper first saw the filled notebook. I can't believe Kira would just focus on first-world countries while leaving third-world countries alone since that would go against his very ideology and very soon, his own religion. That also would seem very sloppy. Honestly I probably would have killed someone in America or Canada first, rather than Japan and then spread my killings out as to not make it look like I was targeting a more specific area instead. I get in the anime and live adaptation it was a "heat of the moment" event that caused him to kill his first target (personally I like the father idea rather than the random biker/rapist in the anime since it's a more emotional, unstable event for Light and gives some serious drama later on for him.) I just think had Kira killed someone in another country, it would have shifted eyes onto that location, rather than Japan Regardless, I could see the AKA being formed after the ending of the anime and I could see corrupt individuals coming after Kira with the intent of killing/capturing him and his power.I can even see the fracture between the Loyalists (those who believe and support Kira like Misa and the one fanatic who I forgot his name) and the AKA. However, the bombing of innocent people by the AKA? Why would the people support them? Media or not, they are still killing innocent people and you can't cover that up as easily. Word would eventually leak out from either the internet or word of mouth that Kira is killing criminals and if world leaders started actively bombing their own citizens just to kill one guy... uh, good luck not staying off Kira's kill list guys, better yet, good luck keeping the people on your side.
