To be fair: around 10 years before WW1, Britain said that in case of war between Ger and FRA, they would basically throw Belgium under the bus. Additionally: despite all its flaws, the Schlieffen plan had worked if applied as planned (just like some 50 years before mind you). German had moved several Bataillons from west to east (whether this was necessary or not is up for discussion). And even with that additional weakening, Germany came so close to pulling it of. They were only on the move until the Marne, where they ran out of soldiers, a gape opened snd they had to retreat to prevent a successful counterattack. With around 2.000 additional soldiers, that gap is filled, and i see no reason for any change in war dynamics.

with no ww1, britain would have instigated ww1 people forget that the war would have never escalated the way it did, had it not been for the War Hawks (which includes churchill) actively pushing for conflict with germany, despite all overtures for peace from the germans in the same vain, people often say "germany should have just not invaded belgium" completely unaware that Britain was going to do it if germany didn't you can apply this to genuinely almost every common scenario people bring up for how Germany could have won ww1 "oh they should have just not have done X" not knowing that Britain was either planning to do X themselves, or made Germany do X in the first place to escalate the war

One ignored thing would be romania s participation in this. The Ruling house was the same as the German empire s house, Hohenzolern, and the King as well as roughly half of the politicians were extremely pro German, whilst the ones from the liberal party were pro french, in a world where Paris would ve fallen the king s pro german stance would ve been proved right to the rest of the nation and his much wanted entry to recover basarabia would have happened, in our timeline the only thing which tilted romania to join for the entente in 1916 was the success of the nearby brusilov offensive which showed austrian weaknesses, thus emboldening the camp which advocated for seeking transilvania banat crisana and maramures rather than seeking basarabia, In our time line the years of 1914-15 were extremely tense between the king and politicians for this exact debate, with a quick victory in france you can imagine how this would affect the region

I think Germany was very very sympethetic to the Chinese cause, I assume in this timeline Germany tries to influence central China in a way US did in our timeline. One more thing I think happens is a gradual fall of Austria Hungary. And I think the Ottomans will survive here, because oil was discovered in a LOT OF places in the empire not long after the war, so if they keep it together for a while they can survive, they would be carved up in a 1910 China type of way in this scenario but I think they survive, the Berlin Baghdad Railway might happen too, who knows.

does not change that the turks were genociding their minorities, which would still push the Ottomans to the brink of collapse, also assuming either Russia, Germany, Britain or any other major power would want that oil, they could easily fund some rebels in those regions to get a better deal in the end, with this leading to a cycle of just revolution after revolution, probably seeing Turkey becoming just some rump state in the middle of Anatolia.

There are some points about this: 1. The idea of a "short war" comes not of a believe in someones superiority but that never before their had been fought a war with two sides who had general mobilization of its male population. Armies of million of men brought a big supply problem and a lack of workforce at home! So the first battle might end it! And when this FIRST battle might end it then as many soldiers as possible had to be at THAT battle! And so for decades the railway bureaus of all general staffs did nothing but put each year more perfect plans to move more and more men and their weapons to that battle in ever exacte minute time tables. With the end of 1905 the head of the Prussian/German general staff,retired and as a lst stattement he wrote a memorandum how Germany might solve its problem with a two-front war against Russia and France. At that time Russia had lost a war and had a revolution! So Russia had been a much lower risk than France. Till Russia mobilize if even joining the war at that time would need time and had limited resources and infrastructure so enough time to deal with France. And even then he had been willing to loose the whole of East Prussia to Russia till the counter offensive could happend. Nearly a decade later the war started in 1914: - the armies got bigger, the weapons more and heavier and so the logistic much worse; - the railway infrastructure in Germany, France, Belgium and with French money in Russia improved massivly; - Germany reduced its peacetime service time from three to two years and still had limited recruitement; France went the other way and included ALL able men - so France had a bigger yearly recruitment contingent than Germany by 39 to 65 million inhabitants; - the UK had joined a alliance with France and supported Belgium but even with its active part in the war their army would be the size of one army corps; - the naval race between England and Germany ended in 1913 when Germany drastically reduced its programm while put much of that money to enlarge its army; - in England and Belgium are two royal families head of state who are strongly German but with much less monarchical power than in Prussia or Russia or even Austria at that time; so the German hoped to find an arangement with Belgium at the best or sympathy at the least - hundert years before France haded invaded Belgium (then the Austrian netherlands) and had forced its people to fight in their army in eight bloody wars; And in germany a man became chief of staff who has as qualification that his uncle had been a great military leader at his time - and he even didn't want it! So for nearly ten years the only changes the German did had been adapt the milization planing to the ever enlarging numbers of troops and weapons. In 1913 the general staff decidec that it quit to plan a war against Russia and only plan the war to start the war in the west; so in 1914 when Germany threatens Russia with war it MUST declare war on France because they only planed war there. And then the three Italian corps which should secure the front in Alsace-Lorraine + there had been no Italian-French front in the Alps and Africa!

I think something important to keep in mind that often forgot about the Schlieffen plan, is that the one utilized in the war is a heavily modified and changed, and not for the better with many aspects were changed with a growing belief that France might be a weaker foe then thought, and Russia a greater foe then thought when it was more of the reverse. The plan was still heavily flawed, but it was a flawed plan that could have seen a lot more success then IRL (although what that would actually mean lines on map wise is entirely in the bloody air and impossible to ever truly predict) but was made worse by repeated modifications.

We talked about Greece extensively in our last episode, “What if the Willy-Nicky Telegrams Worked?” So I felt it right to give East Asia and the Ottomans more of a focus this time around. With regard to the Megdali Idea, I doubt the Greeks would have the international backing for such a massive transfer of power to occur, let alone be relatively peaceful. If Britain offered their support to Greece (which isn’t out of the question at all) and perhaps took to occupying the Dardanelles, well the Germans might just as well throw their support behind the Turks to counter British interests. Furthermore, if the Idea came to fruition anyway, the Greeks would have to successfully settle the region which takes decades, and during those decades they’d have to deal with the far more prepared, driven, and ruthless nationalist Young Turks who would stop at nothing to expel them. It would be disastrous for Greece and make the Agean into a deadly proxy war between British and German influence.

The Alps & Switzerland are in the way. Switzerland was a neutral country, and even if Germany simply plowed through it, he’d have to deal with the Alps, some of the tallest mountains in Europe. The Alpine front was a legitimate front during the First World War of our own history, between Austria and Italy. Alexander Powell wrote about this theatre of war, saying: “On no front, not on the sun-scorched plains of Mesopotamia, nor in the frozen Mazurian marshes, nor in the blood-soaked mud of Flanders, does the fighting man lead so arduous an existence as up here on the roof of the world.” Essentially it would be a nightmare.

Oooh, this is very interesting. Im not sure about how able germany really would keep the french down, id rather let them keep their defencea and current borders in favour of using the clout to puppet belgium more fully and expand it inland to become a buffer state by taking all non french lands west of the Rhine, I'd then use whatever clout was left to sqeeze warships, technology, industry and expertise from the french to boost the Kaiserliche Marine, or ask for reperations to fuel the war in the east and to dund programs after the war, hopefully it would be possibel to do both, but the big idea is to not antagonize the french very much. German ambitions would be more radical in the east, giving independence to Finland, puppetting a small puppet state in lithuania/latvia south of the Daugava river, making an Austrain puppet in greater Bessarabia/Moldova and gaining a Polish puppet if conquering cannot be acheived, helping the Austrians cede some land (like to italy) and move people around to reduce ethnic tensions, while transitioning them to a Confederate Consitutional Monarchy under the german market would be of great benefit. In the far east, favouring japan may be of use later on by giving them Primorye and all of Sakhalin, then allowing the Russians to collapse into revolution before interveneing to ensure the Russian Whites win to create a consitutaional monarchy would be crucial, indebting the government to us and guving us somewhere to begin a potential alliance. This would be followed lastly by kicking the Ottomans out of europe and increasing german infuence to Greece

My only complaint about your video is that it's *highly unlikely* for france to 'stay stable and beat back' revolutionary ideas, especially socialist ones. France had and still has a strong socialist current, along with strong far-right ones even when they were the *victors* of WWI, without the revanchism and national humiliation that was forced upon Germany that lead to the rise of the far right there. I don't see any scenario where france *loses* that doesn't lead to the collapse of the french government, put in place by the germans or no, for an extremist wing, whether far-left or far-right, and I'd put my money on the far *left* just because of the humiliation of the armed forces that just occurred, which is where a lot of the strength for the far right was based in france at the time iirc.

The video was good, but please don't be mistaken. Versailles was not harsh, and it didn't lead to Nazi germany and WW2. Nazi Germany came about following the hidden agenda of Hindenburg and his cabinet of Junkers and conservatives to overthrow the SPD and democracy in Germany, and return to an autocratic state. Hitler was simply at the right place and at the right time to be used by Von Papen and Hindenburg to achieve their goals, which immediately backfired when the Nazi party consolidated power under the period known as gleischaltung, culminating with the Enabling Act of 1933. Versailles did not doom the Weimar democracy nor did it doom europe into another war. It's terms were not harsh, the economic penalties amounting to 2.5% of Germany's GDP. Economic troubles in Germany were a result of economic mismanagement during the times of the empire and not the sanctions.
