Europe should reindustrialize and actually build a somewhat reasonable military budget and machine. This isn't me calling for total war but the reason of "what if USA isn't able to help" we have gone 2-4 generations without that question and that it's now raising it's issue. As an American myself, I am all for helping our fellow allies but it takes an allied effort to keep our nations secure... not an only American effort. We can have military nations and yet be peaceful. It is always good to have a defense ready. We cannot rid ourselves of a defense if there are oppositions that want to and will cause us harm. USA can't keep halting all conflicts everywhere all the time. We as a civilian people are getting sort of annoyed seeing our tax dollars going out and not improving what is just basically a stalemate.

It's important to highlight that although Russia sells oil to India, it does not have any profit from this. You see, India buys Russian oil for Indian rupees, which are used only inside India and which can be exchanged only if Indian Central Bank allows to do so. It hasn't given such permission to Russia. Russian profits are effectively stuck inside India and the only thing Russian companies can do now with this money is... to reinvest them in India i.e. India is the only beneficiar of this scheme.

The shell numbers at the beginning are wrong, outdated and quite frankly pointless, considering the difference in weapons systems that utilize these ammunitions, with the european weaponry being overall more focused on pinpoint strikes such as with the PzH2000, and shell production is one of the easiest to scale if a need should actually arise to do so, since the actual militaries of european countries have a separate stockpile designated as the minimum amount which has to be kept in stock by law or organizational guidelines. And any dependency on American arms is by design, american design, to keep europe dependent on it like this, but we always knew that the US is a terrible supporter if it doesnt have anything to gain immediately by involving itself somewhere, even against the peoples will. Additionally, as youve stated, the russian civilian economy which was already not the most stable has been running on fumes since the supply chains were cut, and though there are theoretically ways to trade with china and india, its not nearly as viable as the oil exports there, since they have their own production chains for most of these products. A country cannot sustain itself on a war economy for nearly as long as was theorized by its early proponents, especially nowadays. And the more these industries are inflated now, the longer the fall once the war is over, no matter if won or lost. On the opposite site you have a group of countries which not only have vastly superior buying power and supply chains, as well as straight up better weapons systems, they also combined have a trained force equal to russias now quite exhausted and organizationally rotten and understaffed military, with the only difference being russias ability to potentially field 20 million additional soldiers as barely trained soldiers. Also citing Iran and North Korea as "successful" isolated economies is perhaps not the best example... Why is there a few seconds of video with no audio near the end at 9:50 ? All in all i dont quite understand what the point or message of this video is supposed to be beyond sensationalist doomerism.

The US don't seem to think it's pointless since the Pentagon has decided that they are going to increase production SIXFOLD to 90,000 shells per month, however, that is going to take at least 2 years. Yet ukraine use about 6k shells/day so it would literally take 2 years of ramped up wartime industrial production to produce a little more than half of what Ukraine already uses every month, and that assumes that they send literally 100% of it to Ukraine, not even replenishing their own stocks or that of South korea or even sending anything to Taiwan, Japan or israel. The more precise weapons system worked well against an opponent like iraq but in ukraine however sheer firepower is the deciding factor, Russia expends more ordnance in a couple months than the totality of shells the US sent thus far. Ukraine has no real answer to this as they don't have enough artillery to mount any effective counter-battery fire.

I think he underestimate the EUs resolution to help Ukraine win. And also how far Ukraine is willing to go to win. EU just need to spend an extra 0,5% of gdp to keep the war going forever, meanwhile Russia has to spend over 10% putting a huge pressure on an already struggling economy with a crumbling infrastructure. Ukraine will win because they have everything to lose, meanwhile the Russians has little to lose and they will eventually grow tired, like the USA did during Vietnam. They don’t give exact production numbers, but say that Rheinmetall alone plans to produce 600k. Before the war production was 300-350k and a doubling for this year is likely. The long term plan is above 1m. The US has a pre-war production of 200-250k and ramped up to allegedly 500k. They don’t acknowledge exact numbers because in the US artillery production is state-owned by while in the EU it is private.

Don't think Russia has any interest in taking Europe or any other land outside of Russia. East-Ukraine became a gray area when Ukraine backed by USA and NATO bombed, killed civilians and stationed NATO military infrastructure to that area. That is a very clear and red line for Russia. Russia is thus trying to remove that threat "Ukraine war" now atm as we speak. The people of East-Ukraine are also mostly favored for Russia and their culture. Aside from that Russia is already the largest country by land size and has already many difficulties on its own. More land is not sustainable nor manageable and Putin knows that. If Europe or NATO starts to directly involve itself in the war or threaten Russia sovereignty directly, Russia would bring in the big bombs. And that is why that is not gonna happen.

Europe could do it alone, we are just unwilling to spend the money necessary. Our defence industry is underfundet but in total Europes economy is 10 times larger than Russias. We just have to get our shit together stop waisting money and pledge orders with the industry. At the moment Europe had spent between 100-150 Billion in the last 1,5 years, so well below 1% of its GDP. We could have set up a fond 1 year ago after Russia mobilisation it was clear nukes won't be used so we could have raised 500 Billion to order weapons for the next 3-4 years if we had ordered 2000 Leopard 2s a year ago we could have increased our production by now.

There is so much ignorance in your comment, I don't even know where to start. The EU is primarily an economic union, not a political one, so it has very little unified external diplomacy. It can't do anything significant to Russia. Every country in the EU has got a different attitude and diplomatic relationship to Russia, ranging from openly hostile to very friendly. The EU has no military. Some countries have indeed under-invested in their military, while others have been investing as if it were still the cold war. Countries such as Germany, Hungary, Austria and Italy have been purposefully handicapped in their military industry by the UN security council members due to them being on the losing side in WW2. Others have been discouraged for decades by the USA and the USSR from becoming military superpowers, and have never had any military industry to speak of.

You know, I went and checked the number. Europe currently has a production capacity of 1 million artillery shells. US is trying to get there in a few years. So we are where they try to be and this is before EU has even increased its production capacity. It takes a few minutes to look these things up. You should know that a lot of these mainstream publications like Politico and The Economist have an extremely strong "US strong EU weak" message. We can debate and speculate on why that is, but when you go into the weeds and look at the statistics, its a very different picture.

5 thoughts: The EU/NATO/"the West" would have the military capability to drive Russia out of Ukraine. But for better or for worse (nukes etc.), "we" didn't and don't have the balls to use our equipment - and our (wo)men - directly against Russia. I feel Europe is right to/must increase arms production, with the goal of ensuring air superiority (+ mutually assured destruction in the case of a nuclear attack). However, by now, soon 2 years into the war, I can't help but feel it would be better for Ukraine/the EU/the World to be open to accepting territorial losses in exchange for a stop to the destruction of human lives, towns and agricultural land. Of course, Putin would have to agree aswell. So I wonder if Putin would agree to a ceasefire +peace treaty along the current lines of control (without a retreat to pre-2022 or even pre-2014 borders, as I think Zelensky is demanding). If this were to happen, Europe must not fall into the trap of letting Russia do it all again in 10 years, and, as I said above, invest in its defence.

The loss of Ukraine is not the end of the want for more territory in Russia. It may lead only be a ceasefire at best with Russia using more of their money to rearm and attack again. Russia has taken parts of Georgia in the Caucasus Region and the their next target could become the Baltics, Finland, or Poland. In such a scenario of an attack by Russia, the loss of NATO countries territory especially in the Baltics, may lead to a threat of nuclear exchange becoming a dangerous possibility in both sides with no clear winner. Ukraine is the best chance in the fight against the Russians to prevent Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) from happening by taking back their homeland. Reenforcing the message in territorial sovereignty of nation states will shows a precedent in showing other nations that conquest will not be tolerated .

I am American since the end of World War II we have carried the vast majority of the defense expenditure to protect Europe. In 1945 was a bomb doubt shell that needed protecting. Now they have plenty of money to do it for themselves. I believe in helping Ukraine, but I think the majority of the money should come from Europe. It is in their backyard not ours. I also think they need to cover the majority of the cost of NATO. NATO is not in America’s best interest. Do you really think the French are gonna come to our age if the Canadians invade? America spends about 4% of its GDP on defense you can argue that is too higher too low, but some European countries can barely spend one percent. They are obviously counting on uncle Sam to bail them out. Now the Europeans have a different outlook on life they like their socialism. They like their cradle to grave nanny state. The west has no interest in liquidating bonds at the moment as it would then need to absorb the shortfall so a large drop in money or forced to auction off the equal amount in new bonds with both higher interest rates and pressure in the bond markets.... Yeah not going to happen. Maybe in a year or two form now when interest rates are falling and bond auctions are stable we shall see. Anyway, if you want to give Ukraine money there are better ways to do it then this complicated process, liquidating bonds, giving the payout to Ukraine but then having to auction off new bonds to make up for the shortfall in debts? Europe could easily scale up arms production to levels Russia could never even hope to match either in quality or in quantity. It would just be very inefficient and expensive as compared to use existing capacity from the US since they do not expect to use these capacities on timescales necessary to justify the investment economically. But should the US withdraw fully, they would have no choice politically anymore but to scale up. Europe cannot afford Russia to achieve anything in Ukraine.

Fun Fact: It was Russia who saved The Union during the American Civil War as they sent their Navy to San Francisco and New York when England and France were just about to enter the war on the side of the Confederates since London created the Confederates. France was already in Mexico making a spear head movement to resupply the Confederates and to open up a Pacific Theatre and to create a port in California. England already amassed 11,000 troops and growing stationed at their Northern Confederacies border now called Canada ready to open a Northern Theatre to divert Union troops away from their Southern Confederacy then to attack The Unions naval blockade. The Union would have been completely destroyed and annexed by those two great powers leaving the Confederates to exist as either a puppet state of London or to be fully brought back into the fold of the British Empire. London was already courting (threatening/bribing) other countries to get involved like Spain while Russia was in talks with Prussia to ally with incase London was to intervene. Seeing all of this Tsar Alexander II wrote a letter to Queen Victoria saying “If you enter in this war it will be a casus belli for all out war with the Russian Empire”. The stage was set for the 1st World War and Russia stopped it. There is also a memorial in San Francisco for the hundreds of Russian sailors who came off their Asiatic fleet ships that died while helping the city put out a fire that threatened to lay waste to it during the War.

I think you have an overly optimistic view on Russia. To be 1.5 years into a war, still in a war, 100,000's dead (young men with their entire lives to produce), sanctioned by the richest countries in the world (locking you out of money and brain capital), the exodus of a million technically skilled Russians, and have a "booming" economy is a little much. Not that the sanctions regime has gone perfectly, but the overall effect is suffocating (or else why does Putin complain so much about "illegal sanctions"). Russians have no power of accountability over Putin - who is currently sending them off to die in Ukraine - so Putin must do everything possible to quell any sort of dissent (there is no peaceful transfer of power here) including fudging numbers, drawing attention to the successes, and burying losers. Seriously, if you were Putin, would you ever report a bad number? Why? It makes no sense. (Similar case for China.) Russia already has poor demographics, and it's going to get worse. Sanctions are not like a tank shot where you pull the trigger at one moment and see a destroyed building the next - this is a mold that slowly eats away at the constitution of your country. They will be lacking labor in the future, skilled labor especially: lots of their skilled labor left, some young ones are disheartened, some are drafted, and you're not exactly attracting skilled immigrants. Now, Putin has billions of dollars and an entire country in his hands. Does he have options to try and out flank the sanctions? Of course. He's a little cockroach and doing a great job of it. But you must remember that as he's scrounging around the black market looking for spare parts, there's a vicious Western CEO already creating the next product. The disparity between Russia playing catch up and the West already being in the future will be the killer of Russia in the future. To be frank, I think part of Putin's stability is that nobody wants (or even knows how) to take over the incredible mess his country is tied in.

Weird video. I think you're underestimating Europe massively. What do you mean we dont have domestic arms production? The German military itself was underfunded yes. But Germany has been the 3rd to 4th biggest arms exporter in the world over the last decades. If we would really commit we could outproduce Russia easily. Its not so much about capacity but about money and commitment.

But regardless of whether it's slightly above or slightly below Germany (which has its own economic issues) in PPP terms its economy has shrunk since the war began so how can that be described as "booming"?

Doesn't matter. In other words, the overall effect on economy of Russia is very modest. Like, 2-3% even though US President Joe Biden said sanctions were designed to cut Russia’s economy in half and turn the ruble into “rubble” as punishment.

First reason of why the economy is booming because we try to rebuild and restore all these burned to the ground cities, such as Mariupol, Volnovakha, Luhansk etc. The construction companies work around the clock. Second reason is replacement of imported goods. Stolen planes still fly, but we need to speed up the development of SSJ-100. A lot of money flows into R&D. Third reason is instability plays in favor for Russia. We sell raw materials and when something unexpected happen, commodity prices go up. We make a profit off that.

Russia is a much larger state that should have been able to to handle this invasion quickly on its own, instead this has dragged on for almost two years and the Russians are so desperate they are; importing military tech from Iran and North Korea (not exactly the most sophisticated arms industry) and have raised their defense budget to 40% of GDP. Yes Zelenskyy bragging about taking crimea in 2023 was dumb, but not nearly as dumb as a much larger state struggling to conquer a nation with a much smaller army on flat terrain on a two front invasion (3 if you count the invasion from Crimea). Russia sucks ass, cry about it tankie.
