To think that two made members of the mafia were going to get whacked all over a stupid joke is comical. But what if the joke about Ginny never happened? Of course we can't take back what Ralph said, but what if he still said it and nothing ever got back to John? How would The Sopranos and Lupertazzis be today? This is "The Weight" Revisited.

The thing is: It was not even the worst joke Ralph ever told, and not even the worst joke told about Ginny. It's just that these mobsters are greedy, nasty, paranoid, and petty as fuck. They often die for stupid reasons (not some Michael Corleone-like grand strategy). Laugh at a guy's pratfall on the stairs and you die; imply a guy might enjoy a taste of the sweet kitty & you die; make a joke about someone's wife or daughter being a good lay and you are at least going to get a world class beat down. Ralph was the kind of guy that was just irritating, and never understood (or cared?) that he was pissing other people off. He was one of those disrespectful guys who is not going to understand what "taking things too far" means, and does not have enough goodwill around the table to defend him when he gets in trouble. Money kept him alive, and only temporarily. If it was not John or Tony, it was gonna one day be a guy like Paulie, or Christopher, or Phil, or even Bobby Baccala (if he could take down Tony over an insult over Tony's sister, imagine what he would do to a guy like Ralph).

One of my favourite things about The Sopranos is that so many major beefs that spark multi-season long storylines stem from one character make a slight remark or gesture towards another. Tony joking about Junior going south on his GF. Ritchie finding out Tony gave away his jacket to his maids husband. Tony having Phil Parisi wacked for gossiping about him going to therapy. They really drove home how much little things can snowball.

1:58 The scene changes before we see Paulie repeating the joke to John but we later see John repeating the joke pretty much verbatim to Carmine Sr. so Paulie definitely told him everything. 20:18 I don't think it was ever explicitly stated one way or the other but I was always under the impression that Donny K was an "associate" rather than a made guy, otherwise what Johnny did to him would have been a huge deal instead of casually glossed over the way it was. The dude also still lived with his mom.

I think that if Ralph had kept his mouth shut, Paullie would have just implicated someone else in the glorified crew to Johnnie. Somebody who would have handled the situation better than Ralph, and given Johnnie even less reason to make a problem out of it. I expect Johnnie would have been wacked earlier, without a chance to discover his wife failing to live up to her diet. It overall would have worked out better for New Jersey, though it may have meant Paullie never got put down by Don Carmine and remained bitter for longer. But then, when isn't he bitter about something?

Tony needed Johnny He had him in his pocket, and was essentially the wall between NJ and New York. Carmine wanted to sweep New Jersey continuously throughout his reign, but Johnny was the one who would always vouch for them. Once Johnny is gone, the REAL problems began. And Tony's reign was short lived after he was gone
