The problem of what to do with the animals is one that only appears because of your hypothetical scenario of going vegan from one day to the other. Thats not going to happen, thus the animals will be "used up" and the overall amount of animals slowly reduces with falling demand. Also you skipped the whole moral question, which I can understand as this is a science channel, but it is still important to consider when you talk about unemployment. You wouldnt make the same argument for farms in 18th century USA depending on slaves to stay relevant. Something everyone should remember when talking about veganism is the exact definition: "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, *as far as is possible and practicable*, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." If you cant survive without killing animals, you CAN eat meat and other animal products. This is something people seem to willfully ignore while refering to the futility of suffering. The problem is not some sheep who eat grass or some farmers in africa who use their animals to stay alive, it is giant factory farms which keep and slaughter animals in the most cruel ways imagineable, to produce an underpriced product which on top of that is unhealthy. And again on top of that comes that lots of the food produced this way, just goes to waste! Making all the suffering, all the damage to the environment totally useless.

And when she said that not all vitamins and minerals can be acquired, The only one that can't be acquired without supplementation is B12. She refuses to talk about how we supplement our livestock with nutrients like B12 and refuses to talk about how we also supplement plant based milks with B12. And from an evolutionary perspective B12 comes from the dirt so its not in meat or plants, it was on the soil on our plants and water that we ate and drank thousands of years ago. She also doesn't say that doctors recommend all people, meat eating and plant based, to take B12 supplements.

4 YEARS AGO i was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), my doctors said it was genetic and also triggered by mental stress, my family said that it all came from inside my mind, that i had nothing. My doctors prescribed me a lot of pills and restricted a lot of foods from my normal diet stating that these foods were bad for my colon, but could still eat white sif cheese and a lot of meats, but no beans and almost all fruits were forbidden. Sometimes i felt relieved but eventually my symptoms would flare up. I struggled all of these years with this awful condition until i searched IBS in KZbin and found a lot of people that claim they found a cure for their colon problems through a vegan diet. Of course i was very skeptical at first, but after trying a vegan diet for a month and making some adjustments here and there, i can proudly say i am cured, no more stomach sounds, diarrhea, no more heartburn, nothing. Even now i eat almost everyday beans, food my doctors said to me i can not eat anymore in my life. The doctors told me i had to live my whole life taking pills and alleviating the symptoms of IBS, now I know better. Now my wife after seeing how i cured my health issues and how my body changed physically i am very lean now, hell even i have a six pack now which i never had in my life, now she only eats meat on social occasions. Nobody can tell me now a vegan diet is bad for your health or even for the world, the problem is people get very aggressive and defensive when you tell them their food choices are wrong. I hope my message helps somebody Veganism cured my colon issues and now i don't take not even 1 pill. @Rhea3907 жыл бұрын
Liz B if someone's sexual preferences included rape then that would be wrong, wouldn't it? Though it's a preferences it would be wrong because it's taking away someone else's choices. Just like that, eating meat takes away an animal's choice to live. So how can this be right?
@Rhea3907 жыл бұрын
Liz B we are not superior. Just because we can conduct a few experiments, build buildings and fly around does not make us superior. We are no one to decide who lives and who dies and we are no one to justify hurting a being that doesn't deserve to be killed. Without our weapons or our machines, stranded in the wild we are no one. Without our knives we can't cut threw flesh, without our guns we can't hunt and animal, without our farms and cages we would barely get meat. In the event of a tsunami it's the animals that run to safety while it's us the "superior ones" that require some machines to warn us. This is just like any other calamity. If you live in an area where the vegetables are scarce or you have financial troubles it is understandable that you'll eat meat to survive. But to go out of your way to hurt, rape and kill an animal just for taste is cruel. We can't use us being superior as a reason to cause harm, anymore than a man can use him having superior strength to a woman as a reason to sexually assaulted her.

Their high levels of saturated fats are still gonna heighten the chances of type 2 diabetes because it coats the cells from the sugar in the bloodstream. @LunnarisLP7 жыл бұрын
More like meat-eating is a religion. It's against every better logic and ignores all science, just like believing in an imaginary friend, or pretending earth is flat, because a book said so. And asking people to make compassionate choices and not murder animals, really isn't "ramming being veggie down everyones throat". In fact it's really just caring for animals. It's like people who aren't racist themself, or those who oppose racism and fight against it when they see it. Going along with something you consider as injustice, like slaughtering and torturing sentinent beings for pure pleasure really isn't any better than doing it yourself. So yeah, vegans kinda have to ask others to go vegan. It's just like a person fighting racism would ask a racist to stop being a racist, isn't it? Yet you wouldn't say he is "ramming not hating black people for no logical reasons down everyone throats". It's common to react to a well funded criticism towards your lifestyle in a defensive way though. You were really trained to do so. 1. You do get every nutrient on a vegan diet, apart from B12 and D, which are not obtained from food, vegan or not. B12 comes from bacteria in soil/fresh water, and D from the sun. 2. You forgot to mention that vegan diets contain lots of beans and legumes, which are awesome. 3. You highlighted all of the very real issues caused by animal agriculture, which are of the highest importance: the environment, climate change, land use etc. And there's far more where that came from when you discuss pollution and antibiotic resistant disease. 4. The range of criticisms against veganism were fairly silly, based on the unrealistic premise that we have to all go vegan overnight, and frankly self-serving in order to make the video seem more "balanced." A cultural and employment disruption is a temporary hiccup, and one worth having to combat climate change, factory abused animals and the chronic disease epidemic. Tobacco farmers had to get new jobs because guess what? Smoking causes lung cancer. Also, the point that some land could only be used for livestock farming is ultimately irrelevant: with all the land we are wasting now, we still produce enough food to feed 10-15 billion people. So we could use far less land, produce way more food, and still feed the entire world, while leaving those areas of barren land alone. If you're going to make videos about this, do rudimentary research. This is silly. You make such bold claims like "not all nutrients can be found on a vegan diet" without even looking into what nutrients those are, and where they really come from. I appreciate the positive information about veganism - climate change and all of these other issues cannot be ignored - but there's no reason to spread mis/disinformation just to make the video more appealing to a wider audience.

"the only way to save the planet currently is to go vegan" Wrong, a far better and more effective method is to choose not to have kids. It's humans that are causing climate change, not animals. We only have so many animals precisely because there are so many humans. Significantly reduce the human population and the problem is solved.
@abdelrahmanelsherbini49856 жыл бұрын
dmike3507 Haha. Would you rather never have kids, or just go vegan. Having kids is an actual human need, those who are unable to have kids go into depression and suffer. Plus,you would be depriving the world of potential by reducing the number of new minds in comparison to the old people in a society. If your thinking is correct , then that means you would think a major Epidemic will be good for the world, since that too would reduce the number of humans. Not having kids or killing the live humans to reduce the human population is a horrible idea that will cause human suffering, going vegan will not cause humans to suffer, but will even solve the food crisis and allow all humans to have a steady food source that we can maintain.
@dmike35076 жыл бұрын
Abdelrahman Mohamed I would rather never have kids, but that's easy for me to say because I don't like kids to begin with. People completely ignore how massive of a burden children are on society. Estimates show that each kid costs about $300,000 in a lifetime including all food, healthcare, clothing, toys, daycare, etc. etc. People go into depression BECAUSE of kids, there is actual evidence to demonstrate this, but no parent would ever admit that. Having kids is only a human need to an extent, some people should still have kids in order to prevent a rapid population decrease, that would obviously be bad; I'm merely suggesting that we have fewer kids, like they do in Europe, to ensure a slow population decline, not a rapid one. Going vegan will cause both humans AND animals to suffer. A huge percent of the world's population depends upon livestock to live, they don't have the technological capacity to adapt to a different lifestyle. You obviously don't live in a third world country. It will also cause animals to suffer because what are we going to do with all those BILLIONS of domesticated animals that cannot survive in the wild? We would either need a massive amount of money to sustain them or they will all slowly starve to death. If you can find solutions to both of those problems I'd be glad to hear them, but given the shallowness of your response I find that very hard to believe. You seem to have not thought anything out.
@abdelrahmanelsherbini49856 жыл бұрын
dmike3507 dmike3507 kids are a human need, but I do agree with having fewer kids. Having fewer kids will only delay an inevitable problem, not solve it. And even with our current consumption rates the world is still going into global warming, with a lot of natural habitats being lost for livestock. The only way this can be stopped using your method, is if we kill half the human population off, and even then the population would grow back up, and will face the same problem. The reality is, even if we stop having kids as much and maintain the current population count, we would still face global disasters due to pollution from livestock in a the hundreds of years to come. So you solution is not really a solution, it just delays the disaster. Now I will answer to your 2 problems. 1. Animals eat vegetation, so for a country to have livestock, it must able to feed them, which means it has the technology to sustain huge amounts of agriculture. All countries have crops that feed the population or they import it. The fact is, livestock uses water and vegetation in much larger quantities than humans. To give you a much smaller amount of food in return. I am a medical student, and I can tell you in very simple words, that the higher you go in the food chain, the less efficient you food is. Meaning, if you were to eat the cow's food rather than the cow itself, it would be much more effective. You can search for it. So in short:going vegan, would mean the end of human starvation. 2. You really think that the whole world will do it over night???? Get real. It will happen slowly until eventually all livestock has been stopped or reduced. I think this answers both of you very shallow and poorly thought problems. P.s i live in egypt. Which is pretty close to third world country.

Thijs Tharn huh? I mean as a technicality paying for those things does entail enslaving, torturing and killing animals? Is it wrong for people to point it out or is it too Politically correct for people?
@lvl-up39517 жыл бұрын
Thijs Tharn what are you talking about? Majority of animals are tortured. They're caged and processed in factory farms, then brutally killed at the end of their young life at a mere 1 year old. They are kept from living their life that they are entitled to, instead are subject to forceful rape to procreate at an unnatural rate to feed an unhealthy addiction we have to meat. With regards to dairy, female cows are raped continuously to become pregnant in order to produce milk. Their young are then stolen from then almost instantly, and if they are male, they're subject to become veal, or females are subject to the same fate as their mothers. If you don't believe me maybe do some research or work on a farm. With regards to egg production, hens are given tons of hormones to speed up egg production, kept in tiny cages and debeaked without anaesthetic. If young that are born turn out to be males, they are sent to a grinder which grinds them to death. Do some research. Plants do not have a brain nor a nervous system, we cannot cage and torture plants even if we wanted to. Bit of a silly moot point, "kiddo". And with regards to ISIS and Islam, I am very much critical of Islam and it's belief system and so are many vegans (Vegan Gains also made a video on Islam). We don't agree with the slitting of throats in the name of a God that has never been proven nor believe anything should be killed whatsoever. I have read the Qur'an myself and have had many confrontations with Muslims about their views on homosexuality and non-believers. But I'm not sure where you got the correlation between being vegan and being in denial of violence within religious beliefs?

Thijs Tharn, if you don't want to give up your bacon and cheese, that's fine - the crap's still legal so it's up to you. But why respond to this positive comment about someone improving her life with such argumentative and cognitively dissonant BS? Farm animals are as intelligent and sensitive as cats and dogs. They live short painful lives and fight and cry on the way to slaughter. So yes, purchasing these products is funding torture. The first thing to ask oneself in ethical decisions is what one would want for themselves. Do unto others and all that. But you do you.

Pointless examples shown here. It’s like saying “driving at speed is dangerous, but what would happen if we stopped travelling our car at 90mph IMMEDIATELY. It would be like driving into a brick wall and we would likely die from impact.” If the whole planet went vegan it would take a few generations, it would be very gradual. This is plenty of time to find alternatives for certain products/foods, and alternative ways to grow crops and use the land. The fact is filtering your protein through animals is massively inefficient. The animal/meat people consume eats 5 times as much plant matter as what it ultimately then produces as meat/flesh. We are taking huge huge amounts of grain/food away from starving countries to feed the livestock for meat. The facts of the matter are if we phased out animal agriculture we would - Massively slow down global warming. (Methane) Massively slow down deforestation (for grazing) Massively reduce - heart stacks/ strokes / cancer / diabetes / obesity/ MS / dementia. Massively reduce the totally unsustainable and unethical GIGANTIC levels of slaughter and cruelty that is happening every minute of every hour of every day around the world.

She even says in the video that this isn't something that's going to happen.
@dhonarico36057 жыл бұрын
linasuperdina remember, humans are the reason why the population of cows is so high, we breed cows in order to get meat, cows are forced to have babies and they can't mate with male cows, the male cows serve purpose for sperm and after that serve no purpose for the meat industry since they don't make milk and there meat is not as good as the females. The cows are not only the result of inbreeding, chicken, sheep, lamb and even domesticated animals are in breed because companies make money out of them and we pay for it.
@sacmakiz7 жыл бұрын
"Whole world cannot go vegan over night so yeah we bother then" lol the logic behind in this video is epic! Veganism isn't about becoming perfectly vegan over night. It's a gradual process, your intention to reduce the harm and do your best while trying out new products and veganizing your lifestyle and likes is how it goes. I am vegan and I eat more junk food than fruits, guess what bbc, plenty of junk food is vegan so are mock meat, dairy & cheese alternatives etc etc... My life is same as before going vegan, it's just the food and products I use veganized, but still based on my values, likes and dislikes. I did it over a long period of time and am glad I did. I didn't fool myself with unrealistic goals and expectations like "Whole world has to go vegan over night, even if did, predators would eat animals anyway so why bother? It's okay to continue eating animals in fact, we _must_ keep doing it, it looks like it is working out well for our profit regardless of the negative consequences" That's not how change happens. You challenge the belief and create solutions to a problem, psychology 101 duh!!

LunnarisLP - unfortunately this is the problem I see in most people's arguments anymore. The United States going to end if hulllary gets elected, the United States will fall if trump is elected. If you don't listen to me and me alone your whole world will crash down around you. Even if far off consequences are true telling people it like that psychologically only will put up ones defenses, quensfioning their beliefs will actually is psychologically more likely to lock them down further in their beliefs and no ones accounting for others and especially their own confirmation biases when looking at the vast ocean of information that is properly, improperly or properly twisted. I don't understand why people don't discuss and then talk about small steps, people are better with things on the short term, unfortunately looking down long term and comparing it to losing ones job, not being able to feed their kids now, pay their bills, immediate hardship as much as you scoff at whole industries dissolving overnight is a big deal and people will think about immediate issues before long term hypothetical consequences that they have no real perception of. I have my own problems in all these areas I am human but everything I look at and read especially if it's something that makes me quickly either say yeah that seems right, too quickly shows some sort of confirmation bias on myself as I'm agreeing without even looking at the opposing research. If I do the opposite and immodestly call bullshit I do the same and call myself out on it. Just in terms of communication and progress I hope we can get better because current ways are two sides of every issue being reinforced by confirmation biases, closing themselves off in social groups that reinforce these, dehumanizing the opposition (all trump supporters are racists misogynists or all Dems hate democracy and are a threat to freedom), never even giving any opposing ideas/thoughts/research/studies/opinions even a chance, and then going to war in arguments with opposing side and everyone in between only reinforcing the people on our sides deeper into our trenches by confirming their biases and pushing the opposition into their trenches by instead of talking about how neither of us know let's share info and ideas and see what comes out as we may not agree at the end but hope we both come away with something new. It seems we only want to be right, everyone knows there are issues and falling prey to our cynicism when we see they are not being fixed is easy and wanting to find a solution or something to blame is reasonable, but then only claiming that is right and not expanding and listening to others or only trying to convert everyone else to our own way of living and thinking is where we lose if. Nathaniel Winston you forgot to mention that veganism is not about preventing all animal suffering and death, but as much as practically possible. There is a HUGE difference between killing animals unintentionally in a process of farming, and forcefeed animals in cages to get them fat to then send them to a slaughterhouse where their lives will end against their will, which is done for nothing but someone's taste pleasure. You are right about the deforestation part, a lot of rainforests are destroyed because of it. The part you are intellectually dishonest about is the fact that these crops are mainly grown for animal agriculture purposes, GMO soybeans in particular, these are grown to fatten up the animals that meat eaters would eat. Farmland returning to native forest??? Farmers will not just leave their land to 'return to nature'! They will use every inch of that land to generate revenue. That is the nature of intensive agriculture.

41DegreesSouth its also preventing them from going into bankruptcy, lets just let people go poor because their area of work is deemed immoral by like 1% of the total population
@AnonningAnon6 жыл бұрын
41DegreesSouth The problem is that agriculture is the thing that is killing one of the Earth's lung: The Amazonian forest. Vegans ignore this. It's not pastures, with its cows, sheep or pigs, it's agriculture. What is happening is that farmers are cutting down the trees and burning the soil, to prepare it for havest, but once the soil is burned the trees cannot grow back (that is a fact), because the soil becomes too dry and poor in nutrients for trees to take root. If the whole world turned vegan, even if it was slowly, you could kiss goodbye to the Amazonian forest, because the agriculture problem would intensify and then the planet would be doomed, because the Earth would only have one lung left: the Borealis Forest and the amount of CO² we are releasing (even without husbandry) is too great to handle for only the Borealis. The ocean is already near max capicity of how much it can stock in CO² and methane. Veganism is not a long term answer, eco-energy is our shot at reducing the load we put onto our forests. After we have eco-energy, then we can pour our money into educating the world on a balanced diet (which does not need to include milk at all, that is a scam by corporations). Rn, corporate greed dictates our diets and energy, but we have to fight that to get a chance at savin the planet we call home.

Thanks for posting this! I've been vegan for 5 1/2 years for ethical and environmental reasons, and some of the benefits of the world going vegan were stunning even to me. I think those benefits would far outweigh any potential negatives that could occur; after all, if we keep pumping greenhouse emissions into the air, none of the other factors will matter much when the planet is practically uninhabitable.

Rice, beans, potatoes. :) You can do it with little money easily. My boyfriend spends 60 euro on money per month, and surely he is eating more than you would. It is all possible. :) Talk to you parents if they can take you shopping so you can pick foods for yourself. Go for seasonal veggies and fruits to make it cheaper. Whole foods, not processed vegan stuff, they are expensive indeed but also less healthy. From what I remember when I was 12 I was able to cook myself meals totally. So even if your parents don't want to spend extra time to prepare meals for you, you can do it yourself. Also, they possibly can't force you to eat animal products. Remember - it is your health, your life. Being vegan at such a young age will give so much in the future. Listen to your heart, you are a lovely being. :)

The only vegan food that's more expensive are the processed things like cheese and chocolate, but things like that twice a month won't do any harm to the bank account. Things like that you can make yourself at him - Vegan chocolate mousse can be made with cocoa, blended dates and banana and added chopped nuts. Vegan cheese takes more work, but it's very nice. It's made with pecans, garlic, lemon, chives, and other things I can't remember right now, but it's worth looking up the recipe online.

I'm not a vegan, but I don't object to veganism. In fact, I understand it perfectly. What I do NOT understand or condone, however, is the arrogance of people who try to shove their lifestyle or their belief system down my throat. I never thought I'd say that, but I believe some vegans are even worse in that regard than both religious fanatics or atheist activists. Wether it's a passive-aggressive "you know you're killing the planet, right?" or a phony, falsely concerned "these burgers will kill you" or, even worse, a self-righteous "at least I'm doing the right thing", a lot of vegans, a freaking LOT of vegans have an infuriatingly arrogant attitude to others. Now, don't get me wrong, I will not call vegans a "cult", or anything like that. But, unless some members of the vegan community start to understand that the WAY they convey their message is the real reason why people are annoyed with said message and come to hate vegans as a whole, I don't think people will stop calling them a cult.

+Ashikur Rahman Our philosophy is that as there is no single nutrient that cannot be supplied on a vegan diet, eating animals creates needless suffering and death, also as it is a needless industry, it is needlessly destroying the planet and dairy and meat are the biggest contributors of saturated fat in people's diet, and saturated fat is a nutrient you should limit, which is what most people dont do, and its why a lot of people die of heart disease and diabetes.

@primitiveprimate55294 жыл бұрын
I’m glad to see a video that actually states the facts and shows the effects of veganism instead of just bashing it. As for the problems mentioned, health is not an issue as long as you eat enough and you fix any gut problems that have come up from years of a bad diet and you can get ALL your nutrients on a plant-based diet easily. Vitamin D and B-12 are the only two that people should focus on and that’s resolved with sunlight (v-D), supplements (both), or fortified food (both). Arid farm land can be transformed into fertile farm land through desert farming (which BBC actually already has an article on... 🤔), and the rest of the points are so easily resolve by the fact that this is a gradual shift, not an abrupt one as shown in the video. Because so much of the world is uneducated or refusing to go vegan, there is plenty of time to lower animal production, killing, and abuse phasing out animal-based products and allowing the growth of plant-based products (meat->mock meat, gelatin-> pectin, leather -> cactus leather, so on and so forth). It’s time to go vegan everyone; your health, the environment, and the animals are at serious risk. And there is no way the message will propagate fast enough to suddenly turn the world vegan so there is no excuse for you to make the change. Save the world 🌎🐮🐣🌱❤️

Hey, it's Mady! I haven't run across any of the BBC Earth videos with her in a while. One of the problems I've run into before when my diet shifted to eating almost nothing but plant based foods, was that I needed to eat three to almost five times as much food to feel full and satisfied, where with meat, even just a few ounces can curb my cravings in a hurry. With the plant based diet, I was eating myself out of house and home in under a week because I was always hungry, and my groceries per week went from $20-$30 dollars for just myself up to or over $60 because of having to not only buy more, but that many vegan products are also WAY more expensive. I was also tired all of the time, and lacked energy to do much of anything.

I imagine there's an art to eating a vegan based diet. For example, in feudal Japan, a typical meal for a peasant might be millet mixed with rice, a pickled plum, vegetables like edamame, and of course fish when they could get it. It had to be filling enough to last through a long, hard day, but with minimal cost.

Why do we need to totally be vegan? What is wrong with balance? Human evolved to be omnivores, mostly eating plant based but have a meat feast once in a while. If you are vegan because of the animals cruelty, I understand and respect that. However, it is not all black and white, most farm animals have been breed by human to be like they are, for example a chicken would not survive more than a week in the wild. So what would happen, you let them all die. Anyhow, I have thought about this a lot and for the planet and animal welfare I have decided to become mostly plant based but I eat meat and animal products on occasions. My rules are simple at home or at work plant based, outside if I go to friends house or restaurant I eat what is on offer, that way I don't cause offense, I feel healthy, and the planet is better off. Also I saw a study recently that compared the impact of vegan and vegetarian on the environment and there is really not much different. Anyway I think people should eat less animal products and the vegan movement is doing a great job at spreading the idea ( even my 70 year mum is now trying Android o cut down on meat) forcing companies to develop better produces and giving people more choices. At the end of the day it is a really person choice I respect the vegan, vegetarian, farmers( if they are ethical, try to do their best and respect their animals).

@rattusnorvegicus38016 жыл бұрын
Yes we are. You know what would happen to a herbivore if it only ate meat? It would get an intestinal obstruction and die a painful death. Why can humans eat meat without and worry of obstructions if we are supposedly herbivores?
@annchrissie6 жыл бұрын
That is not true. Humans CAN eat and digest raw meat, or dishes like Carpaccio wouldn't exist. They are made possible because of modern agriculture, that prevents the animals of getting parasites of all sorts. Also, animals like chickens tend to be infested with Campylobacter and therefore shouldn't be eaten raw - it is not the fact that the meat is raw that we shouldn't eat it, it is simply because of the bacteria. Eating raw meat from a wild animal also wouldn't be a good idea, because it can be infested with parasites (that's the reason it is recommended to always cook meats like venison completely), and humans simply don't have strong enough stomach acid. Because of that, dogs f.e. are able to still eat spoiled meat, or even birds of prey: They can feed on roadkills that have been laying outside in the sun for days without getting sick. Saying that humans cannot digest raw meat is imho false.

My conclusion from my experiences is that what most vegans think farming is like and what farming is actually like really don't resemble each other very much, therefore I honestly cannot see the movement having any appreciable impact on agriculture or going beyond being anything but a personal decision. Can't change a system you don't understand and don't want to understand. Ultimately I can't see myself ever picking it up again. I'm going to remain an omnivore and work on growing my own food.

I would not be a vegan to save the planet, because rotation grazing (using cows & livestock to mimic large herds of grazing animals like wildebeest) and eliminating factory farming would be the best way to increase quality of meat, give the animals better lives, and make the whole process more sustainable. Then the portion of land used for monocultured “feed” could go back to wilderness. Feed is in quotations because the nutrient density from commercial agriculture is barely there, and killing the soil. And then we wonder why GMOs are a thing…
