I didn't think about it when watching this video but it just popped into my head... someone did this. Not with the Powerball but with another lottery. It was the Virginia state lottery in 1992. The jackpot hit $27 million on a lottery with only 7 million ticket combinations, at a buck a shot. A group put together the money and was buying up all the numbers but ran out of time. After $5 million was already spent. Luckily the winning numbers were in the batch they already bought. The state of Virginia changed some rules to make this impossible afterwards.

This is actually something I have thought about before. I think some dude could make a killing if he charged like 20 bucks and made people sign a contract to buy certain lotto tickets with their own money, send the tickets to the leader, and in exchange the winnings are split according to the amount of tickets the individual filled. If everyone is a good actor, then everyone profits on a huge jackpot, and if there are like 25k people putting in an equal amount of money then each individual only has like 6 hours of work cut out for them

One correction - the cards you fill in to purchase the tickets do not expire. You can take as long as you want to fill them in. You'd have to take them all to the gas station and run them in that 3 day period, but you may fill them in at your leisure.

I haven’t finished the video but it looks like you didn’t take your own tickets into account for the prize. I believe it’s around 50% of the ticket goes towards the jackpot, but then again they’re pretty vague about all of that.

I just thought, the papers you fill out to get the ticket, those never change you could theoretically collect all of them and have them preemptively wrote on so when the time comes you can just walk up and collect all of the real tickets with the barcodes at the bottom. This way you can expand your time and cut your workforce so you dont have to time it just right and can play the other days to increase your odds of it being a higher jackpot.

You could be even more pedantic and consider that as the jackpot climbs higher, more people buy tickets, so the likelihood of someone else guessing the same jackpot numbers increases too. But thats hard to quantify

its binomial distribution. you can calculate the probability of being a single winner by estimating tickets sold. This only partly does it though because people favor specific numbers, like birthdays and lucky numbers, while disfavoring others. While probability of winning is the same, you have better chances of single winning a 48, 51, 54, 59, 64 ticket than a 1, 7, 13, 25, 30 ticket. on average though, it will be the same across the board.

It's not positive at $500 million because of the chance that you need to split. As someone pointed out, the liklihood that you need to split when you win probably increases as the jackpot increases due to more people entering. There should still be a point where there is a positive EV though, and 2 billion almost certainly was. However, this was funded by all the negative EV entries, so the lotto is still making money. Still, if the jackpot gets sufficiently high, the EV is technically on your side if you want to enter. I personally don't think it's worth it.
