In recent years, my brain has been shifting from "I want/need to do it all (interests, helping the world)," to "I don't have to do it all. There are other people in the world that can do these things, so I can put less on my plate." Your idea just might grow on me... "You can do anything you want, just not all at once, and not by yourself."

I am crying right now, because I’m having an epiphany now. Being a kid with multiple prices in painting, physics and philosophy and playing football to cancer, losing my vision to acting, to psychology student, to research of psychology and how it functions in internet, VR, to producing theater, to a reality show for writing, to my poetic book, to working with children with mental health issues, to more research, to starting my NGO, to… aaaah! And they always looked upon me, even on my PHD graduation I had to go, because of course I do digital art, and my colleagues were like… Oh, just go, you are always up for the next thing!!! And yea, I am 29 and grasping what I am from your amazing talk! Thank you so much!!!

I really, really needed to hear this. I was on the verge of a breakdown as I've been stressing about what kinds of graduate programs I want to apply to, because I've been afraid of placing myself in a box and cutting out opportunities to practice my other passions. This kind of video and advice gives me hope :)

I chose a graduate program that encompasses a few of my passions because getting the degree is a personal goal of mine. That said I don't plan to let that get in the way of continuing to develop in my other areas of interest. Maybe you can do something similar :)

Finally, something I can relate to my many interests & passions. "You can do anything, not all at once and not by yourself." Love this cuz it's true, and the strategies help me to know what I'd choose to be. Especially if we choose a hybrid. This is an eye-opener and I'm proud to say I am a multi-potentialite. Your story and talk just helps a lot!

I used to be one but the world doesn’t let that type survive so I eventually socialized into having just one passion. Had I heard this 25 years ago it would have been awesome. I hope that this talk can be modified and heard by children, teens and college students.

Great talk... i know what i am now...a mutlipotentialite.. in medical world, you are pushed to specialise in the field you're in.. i was in surgery then plastic surgery, but i just dont want to sacrifice on my other passions.. then i became a general practitioner, which enable me to be who i am, and pursue my other passions.. just because the world wants specialists for everything, doesnt mean you need to be one..

In High School we were given a test to see what kind of career would work best based on personality, knowledge and skills, I scored fairly even across the board. The School Career Counselor told me I would be great at whatever I decided to do, I just had to pick something and stick with it. When I joined the service and took the ASVAB test years later I again scored the even across the board and was told the same thing. I am now 59 and still have not decided on that one thing, I am always looking to learn new things on multiple subjects. I have had a full and wonderful life working as a professional painter (residential/industrial/commercial), nurse, over-the-road truckdriver, salesman (office supplies/security systems/cars/insurance) woodworker and now I work with computers. I am the same way when it comes to hobbies and other things I like to do to relax. The term Multipotentialite sounds like someone trying to put me in another box, I prefer the freedom to stretch my wings in any direction I choose and change course whenever I want.

You are one of the wealthiest people in the world in life experiences, for sure. 😊 As far as the term _multipotentialite_ goes, I don't care for it either, but that's because it makes me think of unrealized potential. Something we're capable of but don't actually do. I prefer the term _polymathic_ : someone who learns about a wide range of things. I do believe such terms are helpful if they are used correctly, for example if they are used to describe a certain part of our personality instead of a label for who we are. Similar to how we say, "I have brown hair", we can say, "I have a polymathic mindset when it comes to my life experiences". 😊

In my case, I’m currently a Computer Science undergraduate but I also love baking and painting. This is such a good perspective and language for this! In my 20s I found myself working full time as a special Ed teacher and began a PHD program to teach adults, but decided to shoot weddings in the summer and on weekends. But because of one of my/our other passions for adoption and foster care, in my 30s, i closed the business i had been building to commit to raising them. Moving from living as a multipotentialite to spending all my time doing one very hard job (raising five kids under age 5 and keeping house) was exhausting in itself, but not pursuing my other passions has fully drained me. I’m now in a season of having a little bit more time and returning to photography but this time as a KZbin to help inspire moms in their motherhood. Trying to blend passions has taken up so much mental space, but i love this visual for organizing that.

Fantastic video and one I empathize with. While watching, I started thinking about some of my friends and if they were multipotentialites. Someone I wouldn't consider one came to mind, but it did make me reframe another personality: someone who jackhammers hummingbirds. As morbid as it sounds, I think there are people who are jackhammers who go at something full force ("problem solvers", "closers"), but then get distracted by hummingbirds and try to jackhammer them, as if they are a problem to solve. They seem like they have many passions, but they are really just trying to get things out of their way, so they can focus on their primary passion. Again, thanks for this video!

Its actually insane how driven you can be to throw some of your passions away, just to fulfill the "depth" definition of success that is so often demanded or demonstrated by society. Depth is of course a good thing, but it can't be worth so much that you have to throw what you love so dearly outside the window, can it? I think thats unhealthy and unnatural and if I may say so, I already suffered from this in quite a big way myself and Im sure there are many people with the same issue here. When she was talking about the connections of the puzzle pieces, I got goosebumps because it was so relatable. However I still think it can be necessary to focus on one of your passions for a while, just because there is that pressure from society to "get good". But like she said, that doesnt mean you have to throw it all away except "one thing", maybe one could just come back later or mix in some different interests in between while you're in this phase?

I'm 42 years old and technically feel like a failure. I just can't seem to break a certain threshold that I'm just not seeing, I guess. I've spent over 20 years in the swimming pool business on and off making several other people very successful while getting left in the dust, was sponsored as a BMX rider, played in multiple bands that had to tour and released albums, worked in an office setting at an attorneys, created at that was sold in galleries, had my photography published and worked on films, etc, etc. Now I do custom leather work and blacksmithing full time. I've accomplished certain tasks that many people try at for a lifetime as a single passion. Yet, here I come along, have laser beam focus, and get there faster than most. Then in the end, I'm still broke and never quite got the success. I dunno... my fear of being the type of person who can only do one thing has always upset me because I could never live with myself knowing I let all these other things in really good at just get passed on by. The fear of lost potential opportunity I guess. But it's also been my greatest curse. I feel like I've become a true Renaissance man who no one will ever heard of. Do I just blame the ADD? Maybe because I never had a support system and advice on life? Been on my own since I was about 17 with pretty much no parental guidance. Couldn't go to college and pretty much wasn't taught anything about finances by my parents. Meh...

Jack of all trades, master or none was a lie. I'd use the term, polymath. Isaac Newton, Tesla, Sagan, etc were all polymaths. That's my goal. Becoming learned in as many domains as possible. It took me years of confusion, false focuses and professions, and pain to figure out I'm not a master of one person. I've been a teacher, physician, party promoter, researcher, collegiate swimmer, coach and now working as and mastering project management/ day trading and consulting. My next goals are to learn cloud architecture, working on cars and carpentry, learn some new languages and becoming really good at math. God willing, I'll be able to make it happen like I did in the past. The key is to ensure that you have a high value skill in the background that pays the bills, but still gives you time to pursue other interests. Second tip is to take advantage of coaches and mentors. I cannot stress this enough. You need help if you pursue this path. The advantage of being a hummingbird is that our different experience gives us a very lateral view of things. As she said, the intersections are where the magic happens. God bless

Thanks for this incredible message; for me it’s so meaningful to hear this, cause I didn’t knew that it was the name of liking many kind of different activities; actually I’m a medical student and I’m just desperate since I entered to medschool cause it’s so hard as everyone knows, we have lack of time even for rest and sometimes even for eat and sleep; so; I always liked to be moved into different groups about dancing, learning languages; it’s my world; and during the quarantine many things changed in my life; cause I’ve discovered trough this years some new abilities (cooking, skating, swimming, yoga, etc) I want now to learn some artistic skate and French language and they were a couple of days that I just have no energy to open my eyes; even for the medical school. And once the days just pass in front of me; I even thought that I’m not going to make my dreams come true and get frustrated; so I was trying to look up for this videos of Ted and mindfulness; and I’m glad that I find the best video for me; and I know now that I’m Multipotential

Fact check: Einstein worked in a patent office, not the post office. 🤓 True, he was a genius, but not a "multipotentialite." I think you're confusing him with Leonardo da Vinci. Einstein's only passion was physics. He worked as a patent clerk only to earn a living while pursuing a doctorate in physics and doing physics research. Kinda like how struggling actors work in restaurants and do other odd jobs while awaiting their big break. Doesn't make them "multipotentialites" either.
