Another cool note. Steam has a streaming feature that is like the portal. Where you can stream your Steam games to your Steam deck with the higher FPS and Fidelity from your gaming PC. So having a gaming PC and a Steam Deck is an OP combo

its nice when it work properly but recently I was using steam link to stream the steam deck to ipad(to still be able to put the games to sleep quickly without the need to juggle save files) but it often would crash the game on the deck when starting it while the game was running, and after having random issues with steaming solutions I kinda had enough of it and want to avoid it so he might have more random issues than he have the patience or time to deal with, while the portal gave him a good streaming experience due stable connection and closed hardware/software.

Sunshine/Moonlight combo is so much smoother. I get lots of stutter with Steam Link. But if you don't have 5ghz lan connection, be prepared for low bitrate and bad latency, which defeats the point and streaming isn't worth it.

Not only is the Steam Deck my main gaming device, it's now my main and only PC. I do everything on it: web browsing, watching media, software development, CAD, image manipulation... it's a full-fledged computer after all. Even if it uses an immutable distro, it's still Linux so with some tinkering, you can make anything work. Years ago, I had Breath of the Wild sitting on my desktop computer, but I wasn't too much interested in playing it, it was mostly to see how well the emulator runs. As soon as I got the Steam Deck, I setup some emulators and Breath of the Wild came up again. But this time, my daily commute on the bus was the perfect opportunity to put some hours into it. It was a lot of fun. When at my desk, I just dock it and it connects to my 2 external monitors, ethernet, speakers, keyboard and mouse. When on the go, it's not as convenient as a laptop for working, but it's much better for gaming. It has better battery life than any gaming laptop I tried. It's low-consumption, much smaller, and quieter than any desktop computer. It has replaced a bunch of my devices such as my Vita, desktop computer, gaming laptop, and even my tablet. I couldn't be happier about my purchase.

Gamer dad here as well. I'm in the same boat as you. I've been a Playstation user through and through outside of the time I had a pc to play mmorpgs. I've also had most of Nintendo's consoles (mostly handhelds) as secondary consoles. My boys have recently started taking up all the time on my PS5 and I haven't been able to game as much as I wanted and with my oldest now joining a bunch of school clubs, I find myself waiting in the parking lot of his school. I jumped into PC gaming this year because, like you said, it's becoming more approachable. I've spent majority of this year on my gaming laptop and ROG Ally. PC handhelds are game changers! I do miss Playstation and it's eco system. If Playstation made an ROG Ally-esq (Not PS Portal) handheld to compliment the PS5, I'd go right back to being a PS exclusive user.

Second half you even started talking about library management. I myself have recently started transitioning into physical media and striving to only play DRM-free games so I can manage my media libraries myself. I hate the idea of being dependent on some company to have to access to my stuff. I think this mentality switch started happening to me when I got my steamdeck too. I value simpler games, handheld form factor, low power-draw, way more now and basically never use my custom desktop I used to be obsessed over anymore. Thanks for sharing your own thoughts brother.

Love your videos man and totally agree with your stance here. We live in an all digital world now, physical sales drying up and consoles releasing without the means to play them (PS5 Pro). Its a foregone conclusion at this point that digital only will wrap us all up into a sort of ecosystem-based Stockholm Syndrome, where we have no choice but to pay up because we have such an investment in the platform. It's where I think PC really stands out. And receiving, playing my Deck, tinkering with it to get the most out of it by way of Decky Loader, I became totally convinced on this future. It's no longer a "but if I choose this I can get that" or any kind of trade-off, with PC you can quite literally have it all now. As you said, handheld, laptop, mini-pc. The same games, different ways, different hardware. You don't have to buy them again, you don't have to pay for "next gen" upgrades or wait for developers to patch them in, the hardware takes care of it immediately. When a Deck 2 comes along, I'll load up those exact same games, exact same saves, except now I'm playing them at 60fps instead of 30-40fps lets say. You have to now decide what ecosystem you want to invest in, and in a world where PS takes games away from your account, charge outrageous money for subpar products and charge you for simple things like online/cloud saves - I see no other choice but Steam and Valve. I'm not one to trust any kind of company but if there was one I confident in preserving my multiple thousand pounds worth of games? It's them.

Steam Deck is my main console. I use it for most of my games. It allows me to play anywhere I want, whenever I want. I can access my game quickly and easily. It's not perfect as far as performance but it is good enough combined with the other qualities that I use it all the time. I also have an Xbox Series S and a Nintendo Switch. My Series S is mostly for those games that do not play on the Steam Deck or do not exist on PC. Starfield an example of the former and NHL an example of the latter. It is very much a secondary console and the value of a Series S esp the 1 TB version makes it ideal for a second console. My Switch is my family console. I play with with my kids and its mostly for those games I cannot get anywhere else. Mario as an example. Steam Deck has so many intangibles that a desktop PC or a Xbox or PS5 cannot offer.

Honestly I suspect these to last for a good while cause theres such a huge Library of compatible games and its a Emulation beast too, its the best console I have bought in a very long time.

you cant pause games on windows like you can on steam deck, so unless you need a pc to play some online game, it might just add another choice you have to make and add redundancy, and when the switch 2 comes out with new games you might be too busy playing that to bother with the windows pc, and by then the steam deck 2 would also be around the corner, so you might be better off playing games off what you have now until the switch 2 comes out and then reassess what devices you really need.

Every time I try to lean into my Steam Deck it betrays me. I’ll download a game that supposedly works great and it won’t launch. Or I’ll run into a weird glitch in FF14 where my performance dips to 4fps for a couple seconds a few times every minute. Or I’ll want to dock and play on the TV and suddenly my handheld-optimized settings and resolution look worse than a Switch port. Or I’ll launch a game and the sound mysteriously won’t work. I know you’re all going to swear that your Steam Deck has never had a single problem ever and mine must be broken, but this is so consistent with my lifetime experience with PC gaming. It’s inconvenient. It’s problematic. You can’t count on a game running the same today as it did yesterday. The Deck has a nice console-like launcher but the illusion is only skin-deep. The real benefit of a console is that games generally work the way they’re supposed to work every single time. If there’s bad performance in a game, everybody will have identical bad performance and it’ll be reflected in the review. Everybody’s Steam Deck is going to be a little different because it’s a PC and that’s just what happens on PCs. How much that frustrates you will vary from person to person, but I’d personally rather pay higher prices for games on a platform that’s reliable.
