One of the best video songs ever. Meat Loaf was a entertainer & showman. Not to mention a great singer. When he passed of COVID complications it was national news. Everyone was so sad. I saw him live 3 times. He was so good.

Everybody who was anybody in the recording industry wouldn't touch that album with a ten foot pole, until Todd Rundgren stepped up and agreed to produce it - Thank You, Mr. Rundgren! Karla Devito - the young lady in the video - is a fine singer in her own right....but this video features the studio recording of the song with the live performance footage synced to it. The voice we're HEARING is Ellen Foley, who recorded the track with Meat Loaf but declined to join the tour. In 1982 (four years after this single came out), Karla married actor and former teen hearthrob Robbie Benson. They're still married with two children (grown now, obviously).

My then high school girlfriend and I were in my car listening to this IRL. Everything was the same except we finished the song, went all the way and didn't get married so didn't have to deal with that. We're still FB friends. His real name was Marvin Lee Aday. He got his nickname by his dad when he was a baby. He was pink and looked like a blob of meat. He had many movie appearances over the years. Including but not limited to "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Fight Club" and "Wayne's World". This song was written by the late Jim Steinman He also played keyboard on this song. I wish I could have seen them in concert but sadly it never happened. I still have the "Bat out of hell" LP BTW they were BOTH regretting their commitment to each other. "It was long ago, and it was far away. So much better than it is today".

My mom used to have the Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell album on repeat when I was a kid in the 80s, so I grew up with this song lol. Easily one of the best overall albums in rock history with this, Bat out of Hell, 2 out of 3 Ain't Bad, Hot Summer Night, and All Revved Up.

I've known lots of people who love this song, but I have never understood how the theatricality of the performance changed the tone or meaning of the song to make it less gross and weird and sad. Some seem to champion this song as some bastion of non-conformity and rawness, but it seems lazy, typical, and ham-handed to me. Always has, but mostly I keep it to myself, because I think this is an Emperor's New Suit sort of situation.

Though harmonically dissimilar, Paradise by the Dashboard Lights has all the same ingredients (brilliant vocals, great musicianship, multiple act arrangement, theatrical performance with a hint of comedy and irony) of another 1970's Ultimate Classic Recording...Bohemian Rhapsody.
