Oooooh Man....YOU CAN'T do Jerry Lee Lewis without watching a live version.......when people talk about Elvis, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash touring the country under the Sun Record Label....the 4th was Jerry Lee Lewis....He actually ended one performance by pulling a can of lighter fluid out and squirted it into the opened piano and lit it on fire without missing a chord.......when the song was over he turned bowed and walked off the stage with the piano burning......AGAIN....WATCH THE LIVE VERSIONS of ALL JLL's songs!

Yes indeed, Tom! For most songs/performers I am a purist. I don't like live versions 'cause they're so often not as well done, recorded, or the live adlibs are lame. Jerry Lee Lewis though is so gifted with high performance energy that there's no comparison to the studio version or, as in this case, a more recent sanitized instrumental accompaniment.

That's a legendary true story... Jerry Lee and Chuck Berry were on the same show and had argued over who was the headliner. Jerry ended up having to open the show. Then he set the piano on fire at the end of his set and the audience was losing their minds. When he walked off he said to Chuck Berry 'Follow that Killer'.

My name is Izzy, I am 73 yrs. old. Jerry Lee was and still is one my most favorites. Back in 1967 I lived in Dallas, Texas. He came to perform at the Longhorn Ballroom in Fort Worth, twice. Both times I went to see his performance and both times it got so crowded that I was literally pushed up on the stage and I ended up standing right next to the piano. Both times!! I am Native American [LAKOTA-SOUTH DAKOTA]. So each time he finished a song he would look up at me and say, "HOW WAS THAT CHIEF?" I just wanted to share that story with you. THANK YOU!!

Well, that WAS Jerry Lee Lewis singing. However, the picture is Dennis Quaid from the 1989 biopic about Lewis, which was also entitled "Great Balls of Fire". It's also not the original recording, it was redone (by Lewis) for the movie soundtrack in 1989, instead of using the original recording from 32 years earlier. Go back and watch a video of Lewis from the 50s. You won't forget it.

@@paintedjaguar "... but ya'll done f'd up picking this particular recording." Thank-you for pointing out that MAJOR fuck-up on their (AMBER & JAY) part when it comes to picking and playing THE essential, original recordings, some of which, and as certainly in this case, turned the pop-musical world on its head, DESERVEDLY so, at the time of its original release!! The continuing overall ignorance of just basic pop-music history on these "FIRST TIME HEARING REACTION" clips on KZbin is most discouraging. It would not take away from the genuine "FIRST REACTION" hearing, by "Jay", if he at least knew beforehand that Bob Dylan's "LIKE A ROLLING STONE" was first released in 1965, instead of the cringeworthy embarrassment of himself (along with Amber not being quite sure if Dylan WROTE the lyrics!?!?!!!) needlessly - and wasting everybody's time - wondering if Dylan's song (It only happened to be a DECADE defining pop-music masterpiece) could possibly be from "... the Nineties". Good grief, man. Would it kill you both to do some minimal, basic research - via WIKIPEDIA for starters - on the history of any said song chosen by you both, before the playing of said song on the "ROB SQUAD"? GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!

Amber's comment about having to listen to Jerry Lee without a video is right... to a point. To be able to really pay attention without distraction, listen once just to the music, then run a video of one of his live performances. His on-stage performance is every bit as much of his show as the music alone. Jerry Lee Lewis laid down his first recording in New Orleans in 1952. If the parents of Elvis's time (He only came along a short time after Jerry Lee, in 1956.) got all indignant about his performances can you imagine in the Bible Belt South, how the parents reacted after they saw Jerry Lee on stage... and the girls LOVED him!! 🤣

Jerry Lee is 86 years old. He did live within 20 miles of my home, in Booneville, MS. He lives now in Ferriday, LA. Where you can tour his home. My dad saw his performance back in the early 60's here in my home town. It was said he destroyed the piano during or after his concert that night. It is possibly not true. Because my dad would have told me if it was.

Back in the 80’s, a buddy and I went to see Jerry Lee. He was an hour late showing up to the show. He came out and played a few songs, stood up and looked at the audience, almost like he was going to leave. My buddy and I yelled out “Trouble in Mind”, he sat down played it and walked off stage. He only played for maybe 45 minutes, but it was a Rock and Roll 45. We loved it!

Hi guys. This was released in the late 50s, but it was Jerry Lee's signature song and still is. He is 86 now and up until (last I heard) a year or so ago he was still making music on occasion. The picture you saw was not Jerry Lee. It was a picture of actor Dennis Quaid who played Jerry Lee in the movie Great Balls of Fire. You have to see Jerry Lee perform to really appreciate him. Playing with his feet and all kinds of stuff. He was way beyond a character. There is a great country music performer named Mickey Gilley and a televangelist named Jimmy Swaggart, Well these three guys who took very different paths have a couple things in common. They all play piano and they are cousins. Jerry Lee AKA The Killer was one of the parts of what became known as the million dollar quartet, who all did some recording for Sun Records. They all showed up at the studio one day at the same time and the boss steered them to a studio to play a few songs together. Those other 3 were Carl perkins (who was the original Blue Suede Shoes singer, Johnny Cash and Elvis.

As much as I enjoyed this, it's just not the same without watching the man go balistic on the piano! He is the most versatile piano player ever, using not only his fingers, but his head, his feet, elbows and anything else on the keys. Watching him perform is like watching a jack russell on speed! The man can't sit still, but is jumping all over the place while playing piano and singing.

The movie is called Great Balls Of Fire 1989 and Dennis Quaid portrays Jerry Lee Lewis aka "The Killer". Jerry Lee Lewis re-recorded his old songs for the movie. So what you're hearing is the 1989 version of an old 50's song. The original version does not have a guitar solo in the middle because guitars back then could not make those sounds. They used a modern 80's electric guitar in this version.

"Check that piano!", indeed. Jerry Lee is known for lots of things. Rockin' tunes, wild performances, sex, his great One of a kind.vocals and more. But his piano! Oh my. Liberace (yes, THAT Liberace) heard him back in the 50's and immediately declared him the greatest piano player ever. Yes, his runs up and down the keyboard are crazy good, but I need you to try and tune in on what his left hand is doing. It is thumping! No one has ever had a stronger left hand. That's where his incredible take on the rock n' roll beat comes from. The timing, the force, the strength . . . oh my! One of a kind. The true king of rock n' roll.
