One of the reasons I don’t buy many Case knives is because they’re so collectible and valuable. They of course made amazing knives, with great craftsmanship, but the collector market has made them worth so much, that I just don’t want to spend that kind of money on them, especially since I’m more of a user collector. Why I love my rough Ryders so much, I feel they’re built well for what they cost. I have definitely noticed the amazing build quality of pocketknives built pre war, thanks to your information from older videos. I’ve got some old Remingtons from the 20s, that I think were made by Pal. Yes, the camillus repros in the 80s and 90s are great knives, but there is definitely something about the action on those old pre war knives. It’s hard to explain, it’s just in the way it operates that you can tell its quality. But I’m fairly new to all this, I’ve got a decent collection for the short time I’ve been at it, but Ive bought so many that I’ve yet to even clean and sharpen. You’re so right about those collector books too, the info is amazing. They’re expensive kinda, but I buy as many as I can find, just to have as many resources as possible to learn about what I’ve bought. I’m getting close to making a few videos about some lesser common vintage knives, so I can hopefully get some feedback from ppl to learn more about them. I don’t want channel subs or anything like that, I’m just gonna do it for the fun of it, and to hopefully get some comments and information. Really cool that you started showing your entire collection too, drawer by drawer. I get some serious blade envy seeing your stuff. Makes me wish I would have started collecting years ago, instead of 2021. I went on a life changing diet and lost 185 lbs, and started collecting pocketknives as a distraction lol I’ve been distracted ever since! Love seeing your stuff Mike, I would love to donate a knife to the channel as well, but I’d like to give you something you don’t already own. I’m getting a good idea now, and think it’s either gonna be a Camillus (or Camillus made)cuz I know you don’t collect them specifically, or a cool Japanese knife, cuz I know you do in fact appreciate the Japanese cutlery as do I. If you do in fact accept donations, I was thinking sometime around July 4th, so let me know if that’s something you’d be alright with. I’d love to hear your musings on whatever I give you, good bad or indifferent. Take care buddy, and thanks for sharing, as always.

So usually I don't accept knives because they have so many, and usually, it's content providers who send knives to help new channels with content. But if you felt compelled to send a gift, I'd graciously accept it. I'd encourage you to do videos. It's fun and shares knives with other enthusiasts. There are many people who show their knives on Instagram, so that's another option for you. Thanks for all your support, and remember you can send me questions to my Gmail 😁

Great vid I’ve been thinking about this topic recently so good timing! I think it can be dangerous to collect knives expecting them to appreciate in value. Collect what you like regardless of whether or not the knife goes up in value.

I agree. Collecting knives as an asset is fraught with danger. I just collect them cause they're cool. Thanks brother 🙏

Cool Video content. Thanks for sharing. The Knife collecting is so far reaching it would take hours to get into all the facets. Military & fighting,Bowie, Dirks, Primitive, in and on. The you have the generational aspect of it. Most likely Baby boomers of which I’m in that group have never collected those Inexpensive Frost and other makes in that arena. Young generation are more drawn to the vast array Modern EDC tactical stuff that’s been manufactured in last 15-20 years. I enjoy seeing young generations getting into the Early Classic cutlery. I dabble very little in the top line EDC folders, but have snatched a few when killer deals come around and the knife speaks to Me

100% Agreed. If you're collecting knives because you think you're going to get rich and be able to retire when you sell it. You're going to retire broke & sad.

I tink were on the same page but my terminology is different. What you're calling "Collector's Knives" are the one that I call "Collectible." Because these knives were made to be collected and are not truly a "Collectors' Item" A true collector's item is not an item that was not made to be collected but is scarce, is valued, and has some time of historical importance and, has provenance (proof of ownership or authenticity.) It is very, very rare that a knife that was made to be collected will ever be a collectors item of value. BTW, Typically Rough Ryder produces around 5,000 knives of particular series. The reason is to keep them number semi low and also so they will run out. Often, once a series is over it is over. Occasionally a series might return but not to often. That said, their is a science to it. The try to anticipate what the demand will be and make enough to meet that demand. Sell 'em fast, sell them out, and introduce the next new series! It's a fun roller coaster.

I feel like the lucky strike and black widow series is being repeated. Do you think so?

@@rasputinscastle , What they have done in the past is release a few new add-on pieces to and existing series. They did this with the Stoneworx Series. And then later, they released a small series of StoneWorx knives with blade etches. And then revamped the entire series. The only series that I'm aware of that was completely re-released when sold out was the Moonshiner Series. A couple of handle materials have been in constant use so you will find them with a variety of shields and tang stamps. White Smooth Bone, Yellow Composition, Amber Jigged Bone, Tobacco Smooth Bone, Red Jigged Bone, Brown Sawcut Bone all tend to stay in production. But in the 30 years that Rough Ryder has been around I think you can count the number of "Series" that have been resurrected on one hand. By series, I mean special packaging plus some type of blade etch, special shield, or other clearly defined feature. I think the most loosey-goosey "Series" in Rough Ryder History was the Outdoorsman Series. I'm still miffed that it seems the only knives that were never put in that series were some actual Outdoorsman knives: No Bird & Trout, no Fish Knife, No Large Toothpick, and No Scout knife! If they are bringing back the Black Widow Series, I have mixed feelings about the Big R. As much as I don't like the Big R, I think this series began with it so I should continue to have it. And to be fair, this is consistent with what I said several years ago. It wasn't that I hated the Big R, I just felt it was being over used. But If they are doing a completely new reboot that includes a non-R Bolster, then also change the packaging and maybe even the blade etch.
