Dr. Kelly Casperson describes what is a cystoscopy and what to expect from the procedure. A cystoscopy is an endoscopic procedure to evaluate the bladder. A small camera (cystoscope) is inserted in your urethra and then into the bladder.
Cystoscopies are typically performed as a diagnostic procedure, to evaluate a problem such as difficulty urinating, blood in the urine (hematuria), or to remove a ureteral stent.
The procedure is performed under a local anesthetic and generally takes less than 5 minutes total. The patient is able to watch during the procedure as well.
Pacific Northwest Urology Specialists is located in Bellingham, WA. See our website at pacificnorthwe...

I had one last year, and the urologist is lucky I didn't kick him in the head! Whining like a baby, I pleaded with him to stop, and, thank goodness, he did. It was the absolute worst pain I ever experienced. Why they don't use any anesthesia is beyond me. He told me on my next visit, he would be using a narrower tube, but before I went to that appointment, I called his office, and I told the receptionist to inform him that I would never go through another cystoscopy unless it was done in a hospital with anesthesia and sedation. Well, we settled on an ultrasound, and that did show some problems, but I've been taking Flomax since then, and I haven't suffered another UTI so far (knock on wood!) I also drink a mixture of lemon juice, applecider vinegar and baking soda in water every single day to clean out my urinary track. And I drink dandelion tea, and take a teaspoon of stinging nettle root powder in tea almost every day.

I’m surely going to be told that I need a cystoscopy, I have a lot of blood in my urine. Anyway I’m planning on telling the hospital that I’m not having it done so I’m thinking what are the other alternatives. I was going to push for a CT scan or less likely an MRI. We’re either of these discussed with you before you settled on an ultrasound? Thanks for the heads up, I’m gonna consider drinking those things you suggest. ATM I just drink the occasional glass of cranberry juice which I’ve heard is good also.

@@champagne_charlie10 Yes, Charlie, I forgot to mention cranberry juice is a great drink to keep your urinary tract healthy. I did drink it for a while, but I found it very difficult to drink every day, because of its horrible bitterness. So I gave it up. And I don't remember my urologist suggesting CT scan or an MRI. He was adamant that the cyctoscopy is the best way to find out what's going on in your bladder and kidneys. I always tried to avoid going to any doctor, but the pain I suffered from the UTI was excruciating. I could hardly walk, so I didn't see any option but to go to my primary care physician, and, of course, he sent me to a urologist. I had no idea of what I was getting into. I think that was about a year ago, and as long as I take my Flomax, and drink the things I mentioned, I seem to be fine. Knock on wood! I wish you luck, and if you get a chance, let me know how you made out. All the best to you. Dave ..... Oh, I forgot to mention, I never saw any blood in my urine, but the first sign that I had a problem was the difficulty I had getting the flow going and completely emptying my bladder every time I urinated. Having that excess urine just sitting there in my bladder is what started the infection ....

I had this done last week. It is recommended after an episode of blood in the urine. Blood in the urine is a symptom of both kidney and bladder cancer. I was told the procedure would be moderately painful and that's what it was; moderately painful. The procedure should take about five minutes. For me, it was closer to 15 minutes. I was fully awake and watched the monitor along with the doctor and two assistants as the scope looked around. I got to use some of my best cystoscopy humor. When the probe finally made it into my bladder and the interior of it was on the monitor, the doctor said, "Well Marty, if you have ever wondered what the interior of your bladder looks like, there it is." I replied, "Believe it or not Doc, I've never given it a thought." At one point I asked them to look around for a lapel clip I lost in the 9th grade. For whatever difference it makes, my bladder looked good and is healthy.

If you are going to have this procedure done, it's YOUR body. Take control of the situation from the start otherwise they do things their way. They think NOTHING of your comfort & mindset. After they use the antiseptic to get you ready for the scope, the next step in a lot of places is grab the scope & do the procedure. This is where you speak up & stop things. Ask them why they are using a 2% lidocaine gel in the urethra to numb it before the scope goes in so you don't feel a lot of pain. Their answer might be it doesn't hurt. Just slight pressure. DON'T LISTEN TO THEM. SOP is 2% lidocaine gel in the urethra then WAIT 5 minutes afterwards for it to take effect. That 5 minutes is crucial. Remember you're in charge its your body so make them wait. The gel may not take away all the pain but it makes it more tolerable. That's my tip for today. Take care. NTT
@pskeenlic8658
@pskeenlic8658 Жыл бұрын
You betch’a!!! You absolutely must take control of the situation yourself. Or they will try to rush starting the procedure. Fortunately I read some of these message boards so I knew to absolutely require them to wait at least five minutes after putting in the numbing gel for about five seconds after they put it in. And by the way, that numbing gel is very uncomfortable. They wanted to start the procedure immediately after putting the gel in, but I made them wait and in fact I had a watch with me to make sure they waited at least five minutes. Also guys, if you have a very large prostate, this procedure can hurt like there's no tomorrow! The pain due to the large prostate may be brief, maybe less than 10 seconds, but you will never forget it. The large prostate constricts the urethra making it difficult to pass the camera through that part of the anatomy. So if you already know going into the procedure, that you have a large prostate, that numbing gel isn't going to do crap for you because it likely doesn't reach that lower part of the urethra. You need something else in the way of a sedative if you have a large prostate. I read a comment On one of these boards about how patients get wonderful sedatives for pain relief and anti-anxiety meds in the dentist chair but yet for these painful urology procedures, we are just supposed to suffer through them. It's insane! It's your body, you're the one experiencing the pain, so make sure you demand some type of effective pain relief.

@@pskeenlic8658 When the healthcare system went female centric back in the mid 1960's, the american healthcare system changed into what many liken to a drug cartel except this is a medical cartel. They threw out comfort & needs as far as male patients go. Their mantra since then for men & boys has been "you leave your respect & dignity & the door. You come to us for service you put up, shut up, & do as your told, or don't come for help". Since then, female healthcare workers have been allowed to get away with bullying, degrading, & embarrassing male patients at every step of the medical encounter. The cartel IS THE REASON why so many men have walked away from needed healthcare. NOT because what they say is men don't take better care of themselves. We DO, we just don't get the same level of care & HUMANITY that females do in today's healthcare system. And that's a fact many doctors know to be true & are beginning to say it in public. I had 3 cystoscopies: all negative results. The first two went well, little after-effects. The last one was terrible, lots of blood and pain and took a week to heal. I easily found (as in first phone call) a urologist who always does these under conscious sedation if patient wants. You need to think about the patient lady, remember us? We are not just a billing code.

It hurts, however I can only assume why you are getting tested and how you are matters. I wonder how they really practice these things. I had numbing gel too. The funny thing was I asked my doc when he would do the procedure and he said it was already done. I saw some water and a small amount of blood on the pad. This was done before I had the Rezum procedure, which also went well with no pain. To make a long story short, my doc ordered a second MRI with contrast and it picked up something on the prostate. A biopsy revealed it was cancer. I did not panic. I called one of the best oncologists in NJ and he decided on a course of therapy with oral Casodex and injectable Lupron. This went on for 90 days, at least the Casodex did...one tablet a day. Then after taking the last Casodex pill I had 39 radiation treats performed. I felt absolutely NOTHING. My PSA went from 4.1 before the chemo and radiation to 0.04 !!! I am now cancer free...so far. I still need to visit both oncologists every 90 days for the next 5 years to declare I am cancer free.

@@matthewrendino9845 Wow lots of procedures. Hope everything is well and things continue to progress for the better! Did you also have blood in your urine that got you to start all this? For me I first had dark red blood in my urine several times throughout the year and even peed out blood clots a couple times. In the middle of all this I had my cystoscopy and everything was said to be normal and same with the contrast MRI. I then went a couple months without and blood in my urine and it happened again in March. Since then I've booked a appointment with a bladder specialist which is finally approaching next week. Haven't had any blood in my urine since March so I hope everything is resolved and I'm over this scare.

Why some have pain and some don't and how to avoid it: *NHC countries.* Not all of them, but I've heard the UK can be bad in this regard. The government pays for everything so they're going to scrimp and save. You should be willing to endure pain out of gratitude for it being "free." Ask if you can pay extra for decent pain control or go to a private hospital. I wonder if this same kind of thing goes on in U.S. Veterans Hospitals because that's government medical care. And our hospitals for the poor. I'd be curious to know how procedures like this are carried out in those hospitals. *Doctors and their equipment.* If your doctor is 80 years old he might still be using rigid cystoscopes. Make sure they have a flexible one. Make sure they use lidocaine gel, both injected into the urethra and put on the scope. You could also get numbed, like what women get when they deliver babies or get a light anesthetic like what a dentist would give you. You might want to see how it goes with just the lidocaine gel and then if it's bad and you ever need another one, go on to the next things I mentioned. I'd recommend a male doctor for this if you're a male patient because this procedure is easier for females since their urethra is only 1/4 or less the length of men's and she's not going to know what it's like for a male. *Where to have it done.* This should be done in a hospital. A lot of these patients are older. What if they have heart problems or high blood pressure or develop a blood clot? Those things require a hospital. I hope all this helps.

if you already have a catheter in place, can the scope be inserted thru the existing catheter tube..? The idea of having the painful catheter removed only to have a scope inserted and removed then to re-catheterized sounds like an a awful lot of unneeded trauma to an already sore urethra..? Or am i in for an incredibly traumatizing experience..? It the scope was simply inserted thru the existing tubing, the trauma would be minimal. I worry about trauma because i'm already highly vulnerable to infections in the urethra and bladder. No one online ever answers these basic question... And many who have a catheter need this procedure. so i'm sure i'm not the only one asking this question. Thanks

On cystoscopy day, which urologists have 1x a week, they will make appointments for roughly 20 people, and go through the process of getting each one in and out, not a care in the world!
