My late grandmother, who was an English teacher, always taught me that one should not say "Make me a sandwich." She said that with certain verbs that structure is fine (I think ones that involve movement or maybe it has something to do with the final destination, e.g., throw me the ball or give me the salt or as per one of your examples, read me a story). But, she claimed that in cases like the sandwich example involving the verb 'make,' you should say "Make a sandwich for me." A friend tells me that he saw a video discussing this very point and they listed specific verbs. We can't find that video and so far I can't find any grammar books or grammar experts that discuss this. I'm aware that there is even a joke about this sandwich example: Person 1: "Make me a sandwich." Person 2: "Poof, you're a sandwich." But both my grandmother and the video my friend watched said that there was a list of several verbs where this structure should not be used. Could you explain this?

I get what you're saying, Kate. This expression is grammatical fine. But you can always opt for the one you're advocating for. I think the context makes it clear what you mean. It's not as big of a problem as some people might think it is.

Bro, the only rule for all this explanation is a direct object directly follows the verb except where an indirect object intervenes.

Depends on what kind of a verb you have in a sentence. With a ditransitive verb, the Indirect object comes next to the verb.

Whereas if it is in any of other valencies after the verb becomes a direct object especially with complex transitive verbs and ditransitive verbs.
