Namaskaram to my beautiful people out there!
Today, we will look into and address one of the most common errors that we make: we take whatever comes after the verb, in a sentence, as an object, which isn't always true.
So, in this lesson, you get to learn what is an object, what is a complement, how are they different from each other.
We started with understanding what is an object.
Object- something or someone that receives an action. It is something or somebody that an action done or acted upon.
Note: To have an object in a sentence, the sentence must possess a transitive verb. A transitive verb is a verb that is acted upon something or someone. It has an object. Examples- kick, eat, bite, read, learn, slap etc.
Complement- It is a word, phrase, or clause that either renames the subject or modifies it. It is used as a noun when it renames the subject and as an adjective when modifies the subject.
Common linking verbs: is, am, are, was, were, is being, am being, are being, was being, were being, has been, have been, had been
Feel, smell, taste, seem, become etc.
Examples-
• Rahul is a dancer.
Complement- dancer
Subject- Rahul
Rahul= dancer
• You seem happy.
Complement- Happy
Subject- You
You= happy

Hello, prof. Ashish. I am a new student in English class, so I started learning English with you a few months ago and I have a question very important: The question is: In the sentence: I am playing with you. playing is a transitive verb that requires a direct object, so in this case, the preposition phrase (with you) acts as a direct object but according to your videos, the preposition phrase can be an Adjective( phrase ) or adverb (phrase), not a noun (phrase). Would you like please explain to me this situation? thanks
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish Жыл бұрын
The verb ‘playing’ is used intransitively in the sentence, meaning the object of the verb (playing what) is not present in the sentence. The preposition phrase (with you) is working as a verb complement, not as the object of the verb. Thank you for being a part of the channel! :)

@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 4 жыл бұрын
A linking verb is a main verb that doesn't depend on any other verb. It joins a subject with its complement. On the contrary, a helping verb helps or supports the main verb in a sentence. Examples:- • She should exercise daily. Should - helping verb (modal) Main verb - exercise • She is a teacher. Is - linking verb(main verb) Hope it helps!

In both cases, no. A subject complement is preceded by a linking verb, and an object complement is preceded by some specific transitive verbs.

@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Edward! She cooks well. In the above sentence, "well" is an adverb that's modifying the verb "cooks". How does she cook? She cooks well. "Well" is a "how adverb" here. I hope it answers your question!

as you said in the video that a noun and an adjective acts as complement in the sentence. so can an adverb also work as complement?
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 5 жыл бұрын
No, it's not a complement. An adverb can never be a complement. An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, and an adverb, but it can't modify a noun. A complement is always a noun or an adjective.

Can a verb complement be an adjective sir? Because verb complement are usually objects or adjectives right?Also if we replace the word dance with a linking verb like is, it will be she is well.
