It’s amazing how Matt finds a way to disagree with people even when he agrees with them.

i used to like the old live at the bike games at the smaller stakes because It was the same level I played at and I thought I could learn a lot more about how my actual opponents play by watching them and seeing their hole cards than by watching top poker players at stakes I'm never going to play at

I think there is an important distinction between high level play compared to Hustler etc and sports. Everyone grew up playing sports to some degree. It's known exactly what is needed to be at a certain level, many never even got close and could console themselves with not having genetics, the breaks or simply admitting they weren't dedicated enough. People accept they are not elite level sports stars and want to be wowed by those that are. Poker is a mind game and before the solver era, some could through experience get good and things weren't solved. Now people recognize how overwhelming it is to be elite and can't relate, don't want to or even shoot down this excellence, the whole "don't own a computer thing". Hustler appeals because people can see the standard and can see themselves there if they had the money. The path to being elite is huge and many check out.

I did always think that it would have been more interesting if they had kept the hole cards hidden from view until after the hand was over. That show that you had where you had the players giving there reasons for why they were playing a hand while it was happening was really good to watch

With regards to the segment that starts with "Marley's Stories..." 1. Berkey assesses that the answer to the question involved ("why are people watching worse content...?") as essentially because individuals can see themselves in a spot too..pretty accurately too! 2. Where do we put the line at for higher "better quality taste" and where those two things connect and of that population of individuals - is the percentage correlated in the streams and if so - should each persons subjectively flawed opinion(to to them just being themselves) be added equally?! That's not going to be a popular thing to accurately assess(I wouldn't make it on both categories ftr) but it's a thing that could save our society if enough "good/honest/smart people." 3. Is Marley frustrated for any reason other than her own numbers though? I didn't watch the original thing we are discussing though I'm glad for this conversation if it starts something(the Hustler stream just attracts fish/bots!) that yields fruit in the future! Liking the Kardashians is still an example of "trash tv..." but people have gotten dumber annnnnd forgotten/been brainwashed!

Speaking to point #3 I think her opinion is widely shared and mostly addresses the contradiction of us wanting this space to be taken seriously, respecting those who are truly great at it, vs appealing to new money that is completely square

To the Tony Romo comment(@1:03:00ish)from Berkey - poker needs a TRUE AND HONEST HERO! It needs someone that people can identify with that's a good person and NEED THE MONEY - So they have to start from poverty and be a disabled veteran or a person that's disabled! Something like that! Alpha Go was siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick - the individuals are WELL RESPECTED - poker players in general ARE NOT! Good writers do this by having individuals that fit the mold of the "Tragic Heros/Characters" that show hubris and their perception of not knowing the proper thing to do!

To me, watching poker is not just about watching high level plays or not, it's about repeating charaters and story building. The reason why your avg viewer won't click in with your avg high roller is cause your avg veiwer doesn't really know anyone in the field that well. Hustler streams are easy to relate to for the casual fan cause that's how a lot of their home games play, plus you have a lot of reoccurring players who you get to know and care about following their results. Those are the things that are easy for people to follow in a longer term scope.

It's also bc the high roller field is filled with people that are absolute torture to watch play.
@kzkilla808
@kzkilla808 25 күн бұрын
@@tommyfu9271 true to an extent but that's like what we're missing from the old ESPN days is there's not much coverage on why you should care or root for any particular players anymore. I'm sure there are some great stories and some great people grinding out there but that spot light gets very little usage on poker coverage unless you self brand and start like a poker vlog or really active on social media.

@@kzkilla808 but let's say someone has a great story about how they grew up or whatever. When they sit there in silence, tanking and playing basically the same solver approved strategy as everyone else at the table how is that interesting?
@kzkilla808
@kzkilla808 25 күн бұрын
@@tommyfu9271 it still gives people a reason to root for them and naturally builds interest in the thing your are watching. Only hardcore poker fans are gonna want to watch for just the poker plays, if you're trying to build out an audience, you have to give them additional reasons to watch.
