About an hour ride to the casino for me. I usually pop this on as a daily reminder on the way because I don’t have all ranges instilled in my head and don’t play everyday. After 3 days or 4 off with a hectic life, it’s easy to make a blunder when you aren’t locked in! When I take a bad beat or a break after loosing/winning a big pot I also come to this. Brings me back down to earth. Then when I’m at the table, everything I say to myself I can hear in a Galfond voice and am just that much more thoughtful and practical thinking
@ogolthorp5 ай бұрын
Your talk on “protection betting” really resonates with me. I noticed I started making a lot more in cash games by shifting my mindset away from “protecting” my hand against draws, and more towards giving the draws a bad price. Draws miss more often than they hit, so you should be making bet sizes where you’re happy if your opponent calls with their draws.
@PhilGalfond5 ай бұрын
Yes! So glad that resonated with you. Thank you for letting me know!
@TheChef-ss9ek3 ай бұрын
Very true I used to fall into that protection category a lot also
@tomatopotato28813 ай бұрын
@@TheChef-ss9ek I never had those intuitions to protect my hand for some reason, but sometimes I wonder if that's actually a weakness on my part. I'm admittedly not a very profitable player these days even at low stakes where I play. I might actually think too much about latter streets and the future. It never fit my intuitions to think of the relative strength of my range against villain's on a given street with more streets to come rather than the probable hand strengths of our ranges at showdown. I'm admittedly a natural-born nit though; that's probably why I think so much in terms of showdown value and betting mostly for value, occasionally a polarized bluff to induce folds, and never to protect my hand on a current street. It was actually profitable for low stakes when I started in the 90s just being the tightest player at a table and playing this way, although things have gotten much tougher in the past decades. So if I have TPTK or an overpair on a flop that's not too wet (to the point where I'm likely behind against villain's range), e.g. I tend to want get value out of it all the way to showdown if possible. The majority of the time, I'm value betting with the hope of getting weaker hands to call. I suspect I'm easily exploitable though.

Hey Phil.. I dont really expect a reply,but would appreciate one. How u feel about the open limp? I been playing alot lately, and I usually raise or fold pre.. but ive started limping pockets pairs from earlier positions.. 2's-6's. U think its best to fold those? Or just raise and if U get 3 bet go set mining and if u brick just fold? What u think
@SuhendraLie5 ай бұрын
I think this makes sense if the table tendency is for multiplay 3 or more players see the flop. This means that your set mining equity of 12.5% becomes more profitable as you're awarded a bigger pot when you hit.

I won 95% of the sessions I played in that game 3 nights a week. A couple home games got robbed in the area and those old people just wouldn’t play in any of them anymore. In our weekly home tourney, usually 17--25 players, we chop top two with 3rd getting double their buy-in back. to save time. I was doing okay there, then I made two adjustments. I quit bluffing, and I stopped slow playing my big hands. Someone always calls. I chopped 5 of the next 6 weeks and I think I was 8/12 at one point. Only person I told about my change was my wife. She has chopped twice as well. It works, and I will keep using it until it doesn't.

Regarding the first comment about only playing Aces if there are no blinds, that’s not how things would work in real life. While it’s true you could make money with 100% certainty, only losing when your Aces get cracked, no one in real life would fold 200 hands to wait for Aces because that would be incredibly boring and people value their time. If you only played super tight in a no blind/ante game, you could 100% make money, but it would be unbearably boring. So assuming the states were small enough, I’m guessing the game wouldn’t play all that differently (for low stakes, which is what this comment was about). Of course, Phil’s comment is 100% mathematically correct, but I think in real life, in low stakes games (super low, where the money lost is inconsequential), the game would play similarly with no blinds to go after, even though mathematically speaking such a game should result in no action.

Ha, I knew an always “yes” player and I remember thinking that’s a pretty solid strategy. Personally I just like to grin at them when they ask what I had
@willh43407 ай бұрын
I've actually noticed the opposite. At low stakes, particularly 1/3, them calling with 5 people behind is pretty much the same as them calling to close the action. At 30bb+ minimum ($100 min at 1/3), they like calling just about any two cards, praying for trips or 2 pair. I like to raise often to get them to fold. They usually won't pay $20 for what they were hoping to get for $3
