Great video. One other situation I was thinking about where a glaze might be preferred over a polish is with original single stage paint where there isn't much paint left and polishing could be too aggressive and dangerous. If someone wanted to take a car like this out every couple weekend to the car shows/meets, a glaze could be a nice option to enhance the look, keep original paint, and not risk burning through the paint. If you end up having to repaint the car because you polished through the paint, it's going to be expensive and would hurt the originality, which is something certain owners really like to preserve.

A lot of people are against glazes which is understandable , but I personally love them, My car has gloss black paint which will scratch even if you look at it wrongly, The beauty of super resin polish or poor boys black hole is that although not recommended, you can use them on fairly hot panels in direct sunlight and you’ll have no issues in buffing it off 👍 I’d rather spend half hour every other week running round my car with a glaze and/or a wax than machine polishing it to be honest, I feel better filling and covering the clear coat rather than removing it. If the car gets bird sh*t etchings or really bad waterspots then that’s where the polish comes in 👍 great video 👍

Great 'little' vid & learned a lot of real world product knowledge. i am a long term fan of Autoglym products using them almost exclusively on my cars & motorbike. I've also found them very accommodating during any comms. When I mentioned that after washing, claying, using SRP & EGP the beading wasn't what I expected, although most would have possibly been happy with the results. They sent out their HDW (£45) free of charge & admit it achieved the desired result. Now I'm looking at compounding using their rapid renovator after buying a DA machine along with my usual 'amateur' detailing process. Keep the 'real world' vids coming as you make a lot of sense, are practical & sound really genuine without any 'underlying' product plugging - many thanks

hey Falco thanks for that m8. Autoglym have some fantastic products and a ton of chemical expertise.. EGP is not especially hydrophobic like you say.. I think thats the nature of the beast. IE it isnt meant to make beading think its acyrilic based (could be wrong).. They have other products which are though.. check out aqua wax if you like their range..

Glaze is good on a product free clear coat but is BEST on top of a dedicated (i.e. Contains no glazing properties itself) pre wax cleanser. This aids bonding which improves the longevity. Allow at least a couple of hours to cure then seal. I've been told that acrylic based sealants work best over glazes - Klasse and Liquid Glass LG100 were 2 products that were highly recommended but I can say I've done this myself. I've personally used AutoBright Direct Cherry 🍒 Glaze, ABD Brilliance and one from 50 Cal Detailing that I can't remember the name of, each worked well, nothing mind blowing but satisfying. I'm going to go with Primo Amigo when I run out of my existing glut of product! Nice one mate....

Lol.. you should start a chemistry channel. That was cool, enjoyed watching you have fun with the idea. I'm actually glad it wasn't that easy to make, since glazes aren't cheap. That thing you used to mix it blow my mind, guess it's magnetic. Make to your main point though, I'm wondering how glazes effect the longevity of sealant? Since its not longer directly on all the clear coat. I had no idea they did so little. I might still use them, but may look at cheaper alternative, or skip to sealant and only do paint correction on sever spots. I can always put glaze, but I can't just put another layer of clear coat.

i think most glazes are pitching themselves as pre wax cleaners already.. certainly SRP does that.. they tell me the product contains specific cleaning agents (beyond just the solvent which keeps the resins loose)... Soon as I saw that cuppa tea in his hand I thought "trust this man, he speaks truth." Can I ask, if you're going to use Super Resin Polish and a wax, after applying Super Resin Polish would you rinse the car then apply wax or would you buff away the polish - without rinsing - then apply wax?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
hey james no need to rinse buff away the SRP and be mindfull not to get it all over the plastics or rubbers. once buffed away I would recomend applying autoglym extra gloss protection to properly seal in the SRP a wax will wash away too quickly.. extra gloss protection EGP is still a really top draw sealant for me I think its polyethelene or acyrilic (could be wrong) but its very easy to spead and apply.. benefits from a good 45 min cure. and will give you a good 4-5 months protection.. and the finish is very nice. You get better or more consistent results if you combo products which are formulated to be used togther. Say for example you pick another wax the underlying chemistry and compatability are more of an unknown.. and unknowns usually equal undesirable results.

SRP certainly has some degree of cut to it, having used it on a red car that I didn't even know was single stage til I saw the state of my polishing pad afterwards. But you aren't going to see much cut by hand.
@ForensicDetailing

it does have abrasives in it.. the info I was given by customer services was wrong. I was lucky enough to pay autoglym a visit for the wax mega test and one of the senior guys their told me it contains a small amount of light abrasives. but the key thing to understand is its more a filler glaze product that you can generally apply by hand and it will leave some gloss, will fill scratches to restore true color and the abrasives will help remove oxysidisation and help burnish the surface as you rub it.. but essentially its a glaze rather than a true abrasive

I live in an area where is lots of dust and on top of that I have a black car, The result is that I have lots of swirls on my car. I get swirls even I use wax I canont polish my car every six month so in my opinion glaze is best option to get some improvement.

I don't like using Autoglym Super Resin Polish by machine. It dries too quickly with the heat and bits of polish fly everywhere, even with a DA at low speed. It's still the best by hand though. Less is more, for easy buffing and to avoid the occasional dusting issue. Slight elbow grease is needed for the best lasting finish and flake pop when using Autoglym Super Resin Polish. I also find it's a very good paint cleaner, doing a very good job of removing the smaller tar spots that can otherwise clog up the clay mitt or bar.

definition of a glaze i I found in a Detailer WIKI: Advantages and drawback of a glaze Advantages: Gives that “freshly polished” look Hides imperfections, which can be useful when you go to a car-show It can be applied on top of any product when needed. Can be layered for better effect. Is very similar to work with as a polish, so it can be used as a safe way of practice before working with polish. Drawbacks: Has a negative effect on durability of a wax, coating or sealant. A wax contains oil, and only suffers from a little bit less bonding because of an oily surface. A sealant will not properly bond with the surface because the polymers aren’t designed to work with oils. Coating need a perfectly clean surface to adhere to, a glaze is not the perfect clean surface it needs. It gives the impression of perfect paint, even when it isn’t. A glaze will perform the best when applied by machine. A glaze on it’s own will offer no protection. Much more then 2 or 3 coats will not give better results. Common misconceptions A glaze does not offer protection on its own. A glaze does not remove swirls. In almost all cases, it will decrease the longevity of any protective product. The use of a glaze is just a temporary cosmetic fix Some products that have the word “glaze” in the product name, don’t have to be a normal glaze. They often just refer to the shine a glaze might give. A pre-wax cleaner is not a glaze, but can have certain fillers that give a similar effect. Czyli podsumowując: - A glaze does not remove swirls. - The use of a glaze is just a temporary cosmetic fix - The results is a nice and smooth surface, which reflects light directly, making swirls and small imperfections much less visible. The big downside is that it has very short durability, and has a negative effect on the durability of any protective product you put on top of it. - A glaze hides surface imperfections rather then removing them. The surface of an object is rarely very smooth and perfectly flat.

How do you work out what is what when they are both labelled “polish”
@JontoDickens
@JontoDickens 8 жыл бұрын
Semantics of what polish is helps no-one. Polish is a process not a product, it can be done with abrasives or without abrasives. There are many ways to polish, the end result is what's important and what determines whether something has been or is polished. There is abrasive polishing, chemical polishing, French polishing etc. You have polished when you have added clarity or shine to a surface regardless of what product you have used......
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 8 жыл бұрын
polish is a verb and a noun.. so it is both. and understanding the "exact" semantics of it is fundamentally important... It cannot be done without abrasive/friction as far as detailing is concerned... French polish is just a product thats poorly named really.. In the same way there are JML style car products with polish in the name that are not polishes.. SRP also being an example... The one exception is using a chemical slurry to level imperfections.. but again polish has been adapted for use to this process because the end results make it shiny... And there are better words to describe this process that get used within that specialized industry.. Polishing = burnishing a surface by abrasion

off the top of my head I would not call it a glaze.. I think this stuff is a coating that has the ability to self level with heat.. but a glaze is a resin which fills..

I asked autoglym on Facebook if srp is an all in 1 or a glaze and this what they said It is an 'all in one' polish. There are powders in there that will polish out and remove defects up to a point, but anything it can;t remove it will fill. so either way you are left with smooth glossy paint.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
I can out trump you on that (but yer your right).. I was lucky enough to be at Autoglyms UK main production plant and office in Hertfordshire this week for some wax testing and asked them about it.. The product is like you describe.. Its something thats very safe to use and probably shouldnt be thought of as a traditional plain abrasive... but you described it well there. they are one hell of a company. totally mind blowing how they operate. the level of expertise and precision and control etc...

Someone said to substitute Extra Gloss Protection for Autoglym High Definition Wax but if you are saying that the Wax won't last as long as the EGP whats the point, especially as since this test was done - Autoglym 'Ultra' HD wax costs an arm and two legs (unless U.HD wax contains resins and silicones?)
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 жыл бұрын
EGP is actually just a liquid solvent emulsion thing with wax. autoglym I think posted that somewhere. I thought it was a sealant or wax +something. so really both products are laying down wax and the solvent vaporises away. Whats the point in UHD over EGP.. well let me put it this way.. if your on a budget yer EGP is probably the way to go. If I had to have one or the other I just prefer the paste wax, but yer EGP is better value.

Very informative video, thanks for going into such detail. This explains why my car seems to have swirls coming back after having it "glaze polished". It DID look great when i picked it up, a few washes later, not so much. I'm now thinking about getting a DA polisher to do the job myself. I think I've seen enough videos to have a crack. My only concern is without buying a paint depth gauge, how do i know how often it can be done without destroying the clear coat, or is it a once a year type thing
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
hey wesley.. so every time you machine you remove clearcoat. if you dont have a PDG you have no means to measure the sum of whats there before starting and whats gone after finishing. generally though you can still proceed and machine your car with no PDG. Look for signs that the car has been machine before. If its newish and has swirl damage and you can see no evidence of it being buffed you are generally safe to machine it. If your using a DA and not doing tonfs of compounding sets then you are generally safe... Or if you are just using a lighter finshing polish etc... If in doubt go and get yourself a DT 156... Note though having a broad understanding of what amounts of material you are expecting to get when you take your readings is also really important. So if your a professional, using your PDG and establishing a record of what levels to expect (ask around to get your records started) is really important. As a hobbyst who might be looking to polish his own car once its way less important. how often should you be machine your car. Once. and when you have the clearcoat in nice condition the name of the whole detailing game is keeping it nice so you dont have to do the marathon that is machine polishing your car, ever again... (although little periodic finishing polishes every now and then wont hurt) take the plunge wesley you wont look back...

Brilliant thanks for getting back to me. I've had the car from new and I've just recently had it "polished" But i think they just applied this glaze with a DA. Looks better but i can see buffer trails and some of the scratches I've inflicted myself are starting to come back. I used the Jetwash brush at the local garage the first few times, i know, what was i thinking!! I didn't have a clue to be honest but I'm loving channels like yours and want to get my car back to how it was, and potentially better. I think i will take the plunge but have a practice on the wife's car first. Thanks again and keep up the good work
@ForensicDetailing

buffer trails are usually caused by more agressive compounds being used on rotaries at high speeds.. so its prolly worth investing a in a PDG and checking your paint levels .. best of luck m8

I have so many questions. I have a dark charcoal black 18 year old car that’s meant to be a deep black gloss but now flat off black. Washed in life and never waxed . But it’s lostit’s lustre so isn’t black. It isn’t badly scratched and cannot be bothered to machine polish. Can I go on with a glaze by hand only ….. then after bang a sealant on. This then has no abrasives so won’t buff up so to speak. But would it return the panels to a deeper nearer original black like an abrasive buff????? I’m looking at time efficiency I deal with 5 cars a week which all look tired. Look to do something with each car in 2 hours. Either an APC wet vax interior only if gopping leave body. Or hit the body for 2 hours. It’s all so confusing , I have plenty product no idea about there use.

Any advice on which pad would work best?(Most people say a black soft pad but i seen people use those wooly buffing pads an get good results it seems so just wondering which is better)Only wanting to remove light swirl marks and a few very light scratches. Can you recommend a good 'real' polish to use for hand polishing? I've used the super resin polish and as you show it does work but only to an extent, I was hoping for better results on fine swirling but I don't dare use a machine polisher .
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
toby you will not remove scratches by hand without working a specific area for hours.. So any "hand" polish really will need to contain fillers and there are limitations.. there is no product to help you.. you need to dip into the world of machine polishing my friend.

Would you recommend using a clay bar before super resin polish?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 5 жыл бұрын
not by default no. Only clay the car if it needs claying (9 times out of 10 it does) but check the paintwork first for rough spots. Sometimes you can use a fallout remover on a test spot like behind the front wheels (where you can lots of contamination) and if the paintwork lights up lots of purple spots then perhaps you need to clay... Or feel the paintwork after washing and drying. Its its rough and bumpy it generally needs claying mate.

Nice informative video. I had no idea SRP wasn't actually a "polish" haha. What would you recommend for detailing motorcycle plastics? I have a bottle of SRP, I was going to buy the AG HD wax to finish after using SRP but I see in the comments you seem to prefer EGP, what do you think? Also I would love to know what you would recommend using to apply SRP and wax, as it is in fact a glaze I assume you would use a softer applicator like a white one?

I would for sure go for the Super resin polish followed by Extra gloss protection (EGP) combination. Its like a liquid when you apply and really does last a long time! Easy to apply and easy to buff. I usually apply with a pad and buff with a microfiber cloth. I find applying with the cloth just soaks up too much of it too quick...

@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
that would work well m8.. remember the purpose of clay is to remove contaminant.. it will scratch your paint a bit (see how to clay a car).. so only clay if you have contaminant to remove.. SRP will work well as a pre wax/sealant treatment either way....

Thanks, I'm doing it right then. Last question, promise , I have a tin of collinite 476 super double coat, is this the same sort of stuff as FK1000p. I've been told it's a sealant but some people say its both, confusing me as it says wax. Huge Thanks again
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
colly 476 is a carnauba (natural organic wax) based wax.. FK1000p is fully synthetic. I suspect 476 is using forms of bonded sealants within the wax and solvent mix to create durability (dont know for sure).. but if it can do 6 months it will typically have a sealant in there

I would like to replace the waxed finnish before next winter on my skoda yeti candy white I contacted the dealer and they said it had been polished with a product that contains wax, not much information I know. So bearing that In mind should I be stripping the paint of all the previous products and would Autoglym super resin polish be a good base after stripping for either a wax or a sealant?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 7 жыл бұрын
I would say go over the yeti with a light finishing polish.. like s40 and that will strip off whatever the dealer put on there and it will gloss up the paintwork.. (use the s20 one step if you want to do a bit more correction for swirl marks etc)... Then when the paint is just nice and glossey and in a good state you could lay down autoglym super resin polish , let it set buff it away.. leave it for an hour and put autoglym extra gloss protection down on top.. that combo is still epic.

a lot share that view.. but there is a demand for a product that takes no expertise or machinery to use.. and can be incorporated into other products.. so the glaze products do work and people want them..
