I can't believe it's the last episode of CC Philosophy! Sad to see it go, but excited to see what Hank and the CC team works on next! CrashCourse has succeeded on making learning fun (so many of us are upset that an educational video series is ending, who would've thought that), and understandable. I thank you for that. Also ironic when talking about death comes the end of the series :/

In the end, I submit to Existentialism. We are the only ones who truly determine what matters most in our lives. Do drugs and food and a cozy bed mean the most to you, or do thoughts and actions that change the world mean more? It's up to you to decide because, at the end of the day, you are the one who has to live with yourself. Thank you CrashCourse Philosophy, I know I'll miss you!
@TwentySeventhLetter7 жыл бұрын
I'd say I'm an Aristotelian Existentialist. While I understand that for each individual, they find their own path, the one I find to be the most fulfilling is that seeking to better myself through relentless curiosity and virtue development.
@bjorntheviking60397 жыл бұрын
I prefer acceptance of the Absurd rather than a deliberate effort to find/create meaning in life. Every time I've tried to find meaning I've always ended up confronting the lack of inherent meaning to existence and all my attempts to manufacture meaning always end up even more ridiculous than having no purpose at all, so I just live in spite of the Absurd rather than try to paint it over with religion and/or fabricated meaning.

Here's the problem with existentialism: If we give our lives their meaning and value, someone who is a murderer, a rapist, narcissistic, etc, can have as good of a life as someone who brings joy to others, creates beautiful art for the world to enjoy, gives to the poor, teaches children, etc.

@superpie2themax6 жыл бұрын
Roy Machine is possibly the most powerful technology used for a frivolous purpose yet proposed in Science Fantasy. You run through a simulation of literal DECADES of experience in less than a day, and retain at least some of those memories upon exit. It's like if Groundhog Day was the rest of the character's life and he reset to that day upon death. You could use that to master any skill, become an expert in any field, gain several lifetimes of wisdom and empathy, and do so in a day. Roy machine as a video game is like using a steam engine for an art display and nothing else, but so much more.

Good for you, whatever answer you come to is right for you, but be proud you have the desire to ask 'why'. I grew up asking 'why' and doing so I created my own morals. I left Catholicism from a Catholic family after growing up and realizing most of the people around me who promoted the religion (or religion in general) were intolerant of others, and against the morals I had developed. Plus trust me if you step back and look at religion and the texts from an objective standpoint, they all sound really silly, even childish. I would still consider myself a spiritual person however, but don't be afraid that your life will change because of questioning, seeking our answers will make you feel more fulfilled.
@pelonp36917 жыл бұрын
Opravdu religion is going to be silly if you view it scientifically, atheists and theists are guilty of this. But if you view religious stories as just stories, there is a lot of value you can find in them. Check out Jordan Peterson

I want to continue this journey into the world of philosophy - so are looking for any books, lectures or/and documentaries on the subject, any requests ?
@GuerillaBunny7 жыл бұрын
Look into Buddhism. Ignore the spiritual side if you like (I did, though it was interesting for non-philosophical reasons), but it's a pretty different (and therefore enlightening, pun partially intended) way of looking at life and meaning from the one we're used to. Listening to Alan Watts has been helpful to me. Also, watch Star Trek (TNG might be the best one for philosophy), Battlestar Galactica (the 2004 series), Babylon 5 (if you can bear the slow, albeit important, 1st season and dated CGI) and just sci-fi in general. A lot of it is philosophy in an entertaining, though not always uplifting, and approachable package!
@GuerillaBunny7 жыл бұрын
Oh, and Theramin Trees and Qualia Soup. A lot of their content deals with religion, but can be viewed in a more general context. Also, I'd recommend looking at Anthony Magnabosco's Street Epistemology (it's based on Peter Boghossian's book, but I get a rather schmucky vibe from Boghossian himself) channel. It's a very good resource for understanding how to examine and question beliefs.

Books: Leviathan-Thomas Hobbes (Political philosophy) Meditations on First Philosophy-Rene Descartes (Metaphysics) Tractatus Logico Philosophicus-Ludwig Wittgenstein (Philosophy of language and logic) Critique of Pure Reason-Immanuel Kant (Epistemology) Principia Mathematica-Bertrand Russel (Philosophy of mathematics and logic) Ethics-Spinoza (Metaphysics and Metaethics) The Wealth of Nations-Adam Smith (Philosophy of economics) These are all books that have immensely shaped philosophy and the world. For those looking for a real philosophical challenge, check out the books involving logic. Those books have influenced the likes of Alan Turing, the father of computer science. Indeed philosophy is the mother of every scientific subject. Crash Course did an amazing job showing us the power of philosophy so go read more about it and be sure to discuss it with other people, even if they aren't philosophy majors or professors! A perfect end to a wonderful series. Your final sentiment is right on the money; the one thing all philosophers share is the understanding that the key to a good life is through asking questions. I think this is my favorite video in the series. Thanks for a great ride, Hank!

62 67 Perhaps the truth some of them contain (in a moral sense) is not because they are inherently divine, but because the people who wrote them did so to create law in their tribal/barbaric society and had _some_ basic knowledge of what was good or bad for a society. For example, the golden rule is not good *because* Jesus said it, it is good *therefor* Jesus said it. (if he ever actually did).

what is the purpose of saying such? because it is true? why care about truth or stating it? I guess a better question would be how do you know? I ask because I am of the cult that believes in purpose, and that you have purpose, though paradoxically allows you to choose if you want to fallow it or not.

However detached I may have learned to be, while going through this series, I can't just not have any attachments to it. It's been a total 8+ hours and yet it's more than anything I've learned about life from any people, art works, movies or serials. Thank you CC Philosophy, Hank and John! Hoping for a second season! (I believe there's still a LOT more that can be discussed under the umbrella of philosophy. There can even be some of the areas of philosophy, discussed here, expanded into series of their own.)

Isn't absurdism separate from exesstentialism? Doesn't absurdism argue that one has to accept that there is no meaning to life while exesstentialism tell us that we need to find meaning in our meaningless life?
@businessboy10007 жыл бұрын
Wigglly Wagger Yes, basically. Sartre and Camus were always surprised to see them both labeled as Existentialists. Camus wants us to embrace the Absurd, to accept the search for answers in an answerless Universe.

Thank you so much Mr Hank.. It's just last week I got to know you.. The two years I'd been fascinated by philosophy though I'm a student of Medicine.. And finding you here was my most delightful privilege.. Thank you so much.. I did a Wikipedia search about you and came to know about that Hodgkin's arrival.. For such a short acquaintance that I have with you, the feeling I had at that time was quite overwhelming, especially the video you did revealing the diagnosis... For someone with a lot of philosophical knowledge, I wondered how you exactly felt. A lot of people change their entire worldview upon being diagnosed with a Ca.. A philosopher like you.. I wish I could talk to you in person about it. I knew I couldn't, so I prayed for you.. For your guidance and goodness. From the other side of the world I can do only that much, and thank you...! Lots of love ❤

Many of us binge watch series on Netflix and other streaming sites. Am I wrong to believe that if only even half of the netizens binge watch this Philosophy Series we would have a much better world? Anyway Thank You Crash Course. It was an amazing playlist. It really felt like knowledge and not like some random trivia which is so rampant in KZbin. The fact that this is all free is unbelievable and reminds me of the principles on which Internet started. Thank you for this wonderful show! It's actually your first show that I have seen more than 20 episodes of. About the topic of the video : I think that as in many cases - people confuse two different things as the same thing. We are actually asked many questions, and a final comparing question. we are asked "how does a good life look - viewed from person x's perspective", and "how does a good life look - viewed from your perspective", and which perspective is correct. but remember - GOOD is relativistic by its nature, so asking about "which one of different perspectives of good - is correct", is not valid. Good is a value given by a cause to work for or against. Different people value different causes, so a "goodness" of a thing depends on the person that we ask. For conclusion, if someone thinks that his or someone's(and the opposite) life is good/bad - they are both correct.
