When you have misbehaving cylinders, it can be easy to overlook the breather on your reservoir. But this simple component can make a big difference. Watch the video to learn how to think about the breather when troubleshooting and planning maintenance.
We make all the interactive animations ourselves, and they're available online at www.lunchboxsessions.com

Great video and explanation for a "breather cap." Both of my hydraulic lift cylinders (Case IH MX285) are leaking pretty badly. I just assumed the seals are bad. I recently purchased the tractor, so still getting familiar with it. I located the "breather cap" and after exerting considerable muscle power to remove it, it finally came off. I think this is also the port (spout) where hydraulic fluid is added. Well, this thing just didn't look right, a little condensation and just a tad bit of rust and really hard to remove. It was sealed really tight. Could the lack of air when the cylinders expand and contract cause the lift cylinders to leak? Could the breather cap be incorrect for this model? Please help.

No. It doesn't have anything to do with why your cylinders are leaking. The cylinders never get any air, and are built for very high pressure. It is likely your seals are bad

I have a Hydraulic questions. I have a 20horse tractor that has a loader and the a back hoe. The tank built into the loader doesn't quite hold enough fluid for both. Like most loaders the controls are at the top of the tower on the right and has a hose that runs down to the bottom of the tank. What if I replaced that hose with a peace of 3 inch PVC capped top and bottom? with of course it will have send and receive lines to hook to the the tank and controls. My understanding is this is a none pressurized section of the system and shouldn't over strain the PVC unless pressure builds up. Would this work and would I need a breather for this as well? Dust trying to get another gallon or less out of the system without adding another tank and pump. Seems simple enough till I start building the peace and find it doesn't work and waists my fluid all over the floor. Eeeh! Just trying to come up with a quick easy fix for not holding enough fluid for the hoe when I'm using it.

Unfortunately I think this is a bad idea. (and I'm usually one for crazy ideas) PVC pipe cannot handle hot oil. The cheapest option for you is probably to make your existing tank bigger. Talk to a good welder

Thanks for the great vid sir, my question is, what would be the effect to the cylinder if the tank is fully filled with oil? But the breather is clean? Does it retract or extend?

Sir,How can we sure that that our prefill valve is getting retract after I mean flapper is getting closed when valve supply supposed to be off whatvis minimum pressure to open the prefill valve flapper is it possible to open in only tank column height pressure

It would be more apparent about the displacement, if the cylinder shown was thicker. Like you would find.

I have a machine with two of these cylinders which will always be opposite to each other. when one is extended, the other is retracted. this would have me believe that the reservoir level should not change. however, when working these cylinders under load, we end up with overflow from the breather. how could this system have more fluid in the reservoir than initially present?
@myselfremade

Perhaps you overfilled the tank. What Carl did not mention is that oil expands a considerable amount with heat. And this will also cause the tank level to rise.

When i see a Power Pack, breather has a top cover which means that it is always closed then how does it allow flow of air inside and outside the tank?
@lunchboxsessions
@lunchboxsessions 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. The very top of a breather is generally a solid surface, that's true. But the air flow takes place through a mesh screening/filter material and through vents that are down the side of the breather cap. The breather cap overlaps the filler opening. Here's an image of a typical breather where you'll see the vent holes underneath this 'mushroom-like" cap.

Hi Carl, and future readers. I have a large Caterpillar excavator, and it builds pressure in the tank while operating. I think this is by design to prevent pump cavitation. Because it has very large pump capacity. 150gpm+ What I'm curious about is how it does this, where does the pressure come from? Just the oil expanding? It has a cap but I cannot tell if there is a built in breather. It does say caution, contents pressurized remove slowly.

But if air enters the system won't that cause aeration??
@lunchboxsessions
@lunchboxsessions 4 жыл бұрын
The air that enters in this case is just the air space above the fluid in the tank, as that space increases as the liquid level drops when a single rod cylinder extends. Does that make sense?
