With coronavirus, we’ve learned a lot of new words and phrases like social distancing, respiratory droplets, and of course, the now infamous N95, but what about its less known counterpart, the KN95?
Most of the information out there on KN95’s could best be described as a vast gray area. So when it comes to choosing between the N95 and KN95 for COVID-19 protection, how do know which is the best to use?
Hi, I’m Rachel Walla with Ally Safety and in today’s video, we are going to clearly and simply outline the differences between the N95 and kN95, so you can make the best decision for yourself and your workplace.
In the US, the #N95 was developed to be a single use respirator. Some are suited for industrial environments and others for healthcare environments.
The is a #KN95 mask was developed for similar purposes as the N95 and also undergoes similar testing. However, the N95 is the American standard that is certified by NIOSH, the KN95 is the Chinese equivalent to the N95 but has some differences.
What is a KN95?

@@Aaron-zk6jn Nope. There are dozens of different designs for N95 masks. This video is completely wrong in saying the shown masks are what N95 & KN95 mean. These are only standards. Any mask that is N95 has at least that level of protection. It doesn't matter how many straps they use or are positioned. They only have to certified to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger. The covid virus is smaller at 0.1 microns but N95 are still very effective because the virus is rarely all by itself and instead travels from one person to another in a vapor droppet which is much larger than 0.3 microns. The idea is to reduce the amount of virus entering the lungs. Only a small number of virus can make it through so a low number coming in have little chance of making it all the way, where as millions coming in thru a large droppet has a good chance of infecting a person.

Thank you for this video, it really helps clarify the differences between these masks. From a purely practical perspective the KN95 is much easier to use for a number of reasons and the mask with the behind-the-head straps is more constricting and difficult to add/remove. For me, I would rather use the KN95 98% of the time compared to the other one simply because of how it is held in place and, let’s face it, it simply looks better than the other one too.

I can breathe much better in KN95, without hyperventilating, like I do wearing a N95. This tells me there is more airflow wearing the KN95, which I assume makes it less effective than the N95. Wrong. If you're looking for protection against a virus, NO mask, including n/ kn 95 masks, offers you protection, except but heavy respirator masks that painters use. Don't fall for the lies and propaganda, these masks are not protecting you, and that can be easily proven and known when you understand the science behind it. I found I can improve the fit of ordinary surgical masks by pleating up the side edges and putting a staple through the pleats - from the inside out. There's a much closer fit to my face and the extra pleating puffs the mask out over my face, making breathing more comfortable. I think the same could be done with the KN95.

Good question! Since N95's were designed as a single-use respirator, those rules were relaxed during covid due to shortages so many started using both N95's and KN95's as multiple use as long as they were still in good shape (not dirty or distorted) to ensure there would be enough PPE for everyone.

Simple, Masks are worn to protect others when coughing, talking or sneezing and offers some protection to an extent. Respirator on the other hand protects the user from viral, chemical particles etc while you breathe in, that's why these respirator are the best for health providers. OK, you talked about filtration. There filters. So they work on microns. The size of the holes in the filter. So just what is the size of the microns needed to filter out viruses, something so tiny you need a very special microscope to even know it's there? I would say that the microns in a filter that could stop a virus from getting through would need to use pressurized air in order for you to be able to breath
@dave8599

many of the particles that carry the virus are large enough to be effectively filtered. Stop those particles, and you stop the virus they carry.
@billtay1963
@billtay1963 2 жыл бұрын
@@dave8599 Except those same particles get stuck on the mask and over time as you breathe in, you pull those virus particles in with your breath and you most likely touch your mask and rub your eyes, nose and/or mouth (like to readjust your mask or removal to eat/drink something) or fail to change your mask at adequate intervals. Masks do NOT work. I live in Peru, South America. We went into full lockdown mode in March 2020 with the entire country forced to wear masks everywhere outside the home (for almost 2 years now). This is police and military enforced. With daily curfews and no one allowed out on the streets on holidays and Sundays for the first 6 months. For the last 6 months people have been required to wear double masks or an N95/KN95 mask. Peru has been the hardest hit country in the world even though they have been the most draconian with their mask mandates early on.

@@billtay1963 daily changing of the masks and proper cleaning minimize what you have described. Our bodies can protect against a certain amount of loading (viral particles) and masks can reduce this loading allowing you to associate in public places with certain conditions such as distancing put into effect. However, once one person in a household becomes infected, almost the entirety of the household falls to the infection due to intimacy. Many countries have more intimate household conditions and that causes more spread.

@@billtay1963 Were the citizens of Peru taught (or follow) the proper direction of mask wearing and handling? When returning home from outside trips, remove and properly disposed of the mask FIRST, then properly wash your hands (not the other way around.) Spray disinfectant (or alcohol) on your clothes, and especially shoes. Do not walk around your house in non-disinfected shoes. Following simple rules can greatly reduce your chance of getting infected. And don't forget social distancing. Don't blame the masks if they are not being used properly.

Because it is not the tax payers responsibility to supply you with a mask. Go live in red china if you want the government to cater to your wants. if the biden provided masks, there would be none on the private market, and it will be the whim of the politician to decide who gets them. Maybe they will go to the powerful teachers union employees, certainly members of Congress and their families are tops on the list. then we have equity, so people of color get them prioritized over whites. Then a certain number will be reserved for LGBT folks, who have been traditionally marginalized. every one of the million illegals that biden relocated to American cities will also be prioritized, we are after all a nation of immigrants So if your born here, back of the line for you. @@dave8599, I'd say your comment wins you the Darwin Award. If there is good ventilation, the mask is unnecessary. If there is no ventilation and you spend any time in the space, after someone infectious has been there, your chance of inhaling the virus through the mask is excellent, regardless of that someone wearing a mask or not. The longer that someone spent in the space, and the longer you spend in that space, and the quality of ventilation, will determine how exposed you are. In virology labs, where the virus might be, they wear an inflated suit fed from an umbilical. The N95 designation filters 95% of bacteria. Bacteria is huge, compared to virus. Since 2020 began there have been some overly optimistic "scientific reports" that claimed masks were effective. Such is propaganda. A harsh look at the available masks shows they let aerosol through and if the aerosol were from an infected person, each drop could contain hundreds of thousands of virus particles. The "masks" that do not let the aerosol through are respirators precisely fitted to a hair free face and tested with an aerosol scent. If you can smell the scent, you have to get a fresh respirator and start over.
