What is a Phono preamp and what should you look for in one? Which is better: internal or external?

I just bought the PA-10 phono preamp and find it an excellant choise..I have seen a lot of youtube videos on external preamps and often wondered if they were better than the ones in my Itegrated amps and receivers...I have two turntables and RT-85 with the 2m blue cart,,and a Taya pl-100 with a Shure V15II cart...although my internal preamps seem to be working really well, I just had to find out if an external one would be any better...your PA-10 does the job very well indeed so I had to tell you this...some people had popood it , for distortion but I did not find that at all...I have a few of your products and am very pleased knowing that you produce truly fine ones in every way...being an 84 year old Canadian I am also please to know that Fluance is a Canadain Company...good on yah ....
