Always remembered the yellow fogs, really wanted one of these when I had an Uno as first car in the early 90s, R5 and 205 were much more expensive than Fiesta, Metro and my Uno 😀

I had the turbo. It was brilliant for the ten minutes it lasted in between repairs. It was also crippling to insure at 18 in the late 1990's. Still one of the most fun to drive cars I've ever owned.

I seem to recall that they did a 1.7 version of the Monaco that really wasn't much slower than the GTT. Always really liked them!

I still have my rather tatty 1989 brochure for the R5. As a child I would long for the GT Turbo but the Monaco also fought my attention. There was also the GTX which looked very similar to the Monaco with its side skirts and body coloured bumpers but the alloys dig legged alloys were optional on GTX. You also didn't get the three spoke steering wheel and the leather upholstery was trimmed in velour but still a very nice car. Monaco was 3dr only while GTX was 3 or 5 door. The 3speef Auto version of the Monaco had the 1397cc Cleon engine but if you had a manual gearbox with your Monaco or GTX you would have gotten a 1721cc engine as found in many larger Renault and Volvo if the time such as the sporty 480. Only the Peugeot 205 Gentry could equal the R5 Monaco for small car luxury making the Fiesta Gha look like a mid range model by comparison. The under parcel shelf garment carrier was also a feature seen on the MK1 Clio Baccara and Williams. A number of 5s went through my family but sadly never anything as desirable as the Monaco.

The Renault 21 Monaco was available here in the UK. I had one back in the late nineties. Memories are a little hazy but it was metallic brown with the tan leather interior. I'm fairly sure it had the 1.7 petrol engine and a 5 speed manual. I don't think it had power steering though and I'm also pretty sure mine had a black leather steering wheel. Nice car back in the day.

My friend's boyfriend, had at Renault 25 Monaco in Brown with tan interior in the mid 1990's.(presumably given to him from his dad). I remember him giving a lift down from Manchester to London in it... It was lovely... Like driving around in a posh living room...

Correction: it's the Renault 5 Baccarat, known as Monaco in some areas. Baccarat is the original french name of the car.

Yes, I was wrestling in my mind as to where else you would find the 1.7 in the 5 range? Was there a standard offering in a GTX or something? Also was it the twin choke variant as found in a 21 GTS, or the boggo one from a 21TL? I was 10 at time and a bit of a “Renorak” but time, middle-age, two divorces and an incredible permanent sense of impending doom have reduced the space I had previously made for such frivolities.

@@farmergeddon7527 it used the F3N 1.7 litre I believe with fuel injection producing 94 bhp, used in various Renaults at the time plus some Volvo 400 series.

The same special model "Monaco" in the UK was called "Exclusive" in France, Benelux, Spain and in Austria "Baccara". Incidentally, the engine with carburettor (there were also an injection engine) suffered from a warped carburettor as it was located above the hot manifold at the back between the engine and the splashwall and was thus exposed to strong thermal loads. Renault tried to solve the problem with complex carburettor foot gaskets to solve, but only the planning of the carburettor brought a permanent solution.

In France and most of Europe it was known as Baccara. Only Germany and UK knew the Baccara as 'Exklusiv' and 'Monaco' respectively.

A used cars dealer here in Germany had a "Baccara" in his lot for several months, some looks as the Monaco in the video. Quite tempting, but it smelled of gasoline and was way overpriced, otherwise it could have been mine now.

My first car was a Renault 5 - a TR. It was pretty hopeless to be honest, and the interior plastics were hard and flimsy. I did like the Monaco version though - the leather trim and body coloured bumpers lifted it significantly.
