A seatbelt pre-tensioner is designed to deploy during an auto accident and pull the passenger tighter into their seat. Every car owner should have an emergency cutter and glass breaker on their keychain or nearby amzn.to/42l0mpH to prevent getting trapped in their car after an accident or flood.

I really appreciate your video. Both tensioners are giving a fault code, and I did not know whether to change them or look deeper into the airbag light fault. I can definitely say my tensioners have not been activated. 👍🏼

I agree about the not fixing these things. There are some things that should be replaced once they are used or even remotely faulty, and a seat belt pretensioner is definitely one of them. Thank you for the information.

Thanks alot for the teaching on the seatbelt pretensioner. I have been wondering why my car shows fault code "Driver seatbelt tensioner too high". And i found out i was sold a car that was involved in an accident and the airbag was discharged so when they fitted new airbag, they did not replace pretensioner buckle.

I bought a car that had been crashed. The rear seat belts are locked up and this totally explains why! In theory, could you have a functioning seatbelt without pretensioners?

It is recommended to replace them. But they should still latch and hold.

What's very likely is that the force limiters in the belts have also been activated. It's a torsionally flexible rod inside the seatbelt assembly, which will twist and deform during the collision to allow the webbing to spool out in a controlled way. Once it's been already deformed there's no guarantee that it wouldn't just snap in case of another collision, letting the seatbelt become completely loose.

How can you test if your pretensioner is faulty, WITHOUT using something like a multimeter?

There are two wires going to the pretensioner, does it matter which way round they fit to the underseat connector. Reason i ask is i have a replacement pretentioner with different coloured wires to the original.

Thanks for sharing. Do you know what the signal these expect? Is it usually 12V, some CAN based signal or something else? I ask as I am curious how hard it is to retrofit another seat into my cargo van and have it still triggered by maybe the passenger seat in the event of an accident.
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 2 жыл бұрын
I doubt that would work and wouldn't suggest trying it. Just like airbags, the pretensioners are triggered by the SRS module sending 12V at the exact time it's required. The problem is that the module is only designed to supply a certain amount of current and trying to fire two pretensioners off one output could overload the module and cause it to not work as intended. This may mean it might not fire either pretensioner at all or maybe it fires them too late.

They are an OEM part that is vehicle specific. It depends on the make and model of your car if it came with them from the manufacture.

If you’re repairing any single use safety item, check with your insurance carrier to understand that they will cover a loss when you get sued. If you are using rebuilt airbags/pretensioner in a repair instead of OEM and you’re not disclosing that to the customer AND the insurance company paying for the repair, that is morally reprehensible and likely criminally negligent. If you sell a car that you know has aftermarket or rebuilt airbags, and you don’t disclose it, you are amongst the worst of all humans.
